Kerr Gives Streak the Boot
Bobcats Officially Name Victory Hill, Barely
Saturday, September 28, 2002
Kevin Kerr booted through a 37-yard field goal with 10 seconds left as Ohio rallied to break one of the nation's longest Division 1-A losing streaks at 10 games. Perhaps even more important than the 34-32 win for the Bobcats against a 1-4 Buffalo squad was the way they won ? mounting a come-from-behind victory in the final minute.
Since Brian Knorr took over last season, the string of games Ohio lost after leading or being tied in the second half began to read like a mini-version of its schedule. Akron, WVU, Iowa State, Toledo, Miami, Connecticut. The year prior, last-minute losses to Akron and Miami cost the Bobcats a shot at the MAC title.
Because of several turnovers, Ohio indeed squandered a sizable second-half lead against Buffalo. Having trailed from Ohio's 14-point opening outburst, Buffalo grabbed its first lead with 3:39 left when Dallas Pelz kicked a 29-yard field goal. The kick capped a furious comeback for the Bulls, which trailed 28-9 with 5:01 left in the third quarter.
The announced crowd of 12,512 at Peden Stadium had to be thinking, "Here we go again." But Knorr said he saw a different look in his team's eyes tonight.
"I just felt throughout the whole night, we were going to win," said Knorr. "They just had that look in their eyes they would get it done some how, some way."
Ohio's option offense, which Knorr went back to after the Northeastern loss, began to hit stride against Buffalo, with more than 400 yards rushing and 500 yards of total offense. On the last drive, Dontrell Jackson mastered a mix of option runs and passes, moving the ball to Buffalo's 20 while whittling the time down to 10 seconds. Key to the drive was a 32-yard pass to running back Ray Huston that moved the ball to the Bull 34 yard line.
Several plays later, a calm Kerr delivered.
"I really believe for Kevin Kerr it was no different than kicking on Tuesday afternoons," said Knorr.
Jackson and Chad Brinker were the offensive stars of the night for Ohio. Jackson had 28 carries for 157 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, as well as completing six passes in nine attempts for 99 yards (no TDs or INTs). Brinker tallied 149 yards and 1 TD on 29 carries.
Ohio (1-4 overall but 1-0 in the MAC) will have to put the Buffalo win in perspective, however, as it travels next Saturday to meet perhaps the MAC's hottest team, MAC West front runner Bowling Green (3-0).
