Bonnies use big 2nd-half run to pull away

St. Bonaventure has a pair of 10-0 spurts

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – St. Bonaventure was hot beyond the arc and used a second-half run to pull away from Ohio, 81-68, on Saturday at the Reilly Center.

The Bobcats led 50-46 with 13:34 remaining but got outscored 27-6 over the following nine minutes.

Though they entered the game as a poor shooting team from beyond the arc, the Bonnies (5-2) went 10 of 22 in the game, including 6 of 11 in the second half. Jaylen Adams was 5 of 7 on 3s and finished with 22 points, and Marcus Posley added 19 points. Dion Wright posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 boards.

Antonio Campbell paced Ohio (4-3) with 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Treg Setty had 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Jaaron Simmons finished with nine points and nine assists.

Ohio’s biggest lead of the second half was 45-40 on a Setty layup with 16:30 remaining, and a Simmons 3-pointer at the 14:27 mark made it 48-44. After the teams traded baskets, Gregg and Adams hit back-to-back treys to put the Bonnies on top for good. Adams added a layup and Wright two free throws to cap off a run of 10 straight points.

Ohio hung close, trailing 62-56 with 7:16 remaining, before another 10-0 run put it away. Posley had two free throws, Nelson Kaputo hit his third 3-pointer of the day, Gregs hit two foul shots, and Adams’ 3-pointer with 4:53 to go made it 72-56.

Both teams made small runs in the first half, with neither leading by more than five points, and a Posley trey just before halftime sent the Bonnies into the locker room with a 37-35 lead.

Ohio actually shot better from the field at 46.3 percent, compared to 41.5 percent by St. Bonaventure, but the Bonnies were 17 of 20 at the foul line, while The Bobcats were 9 of 10. Ohio had more turnovers, 13-6, and fewer rebounds, 37-32, including 13-6 on the offensive boards, to get more opportunities.

"What really concerns me is 13 offensive rebounds for them and how many balls that maybe bounded to the corner and were maybe 50/50 balls, which you've got to find a way to get, especially on the road, especially in a game where not a lot is going right for you,” Ohio coach Saul Phillips said. “Those are the ones you've got to seize, and we didn't do a terrific job of that tonight. I think maybe the battle in the trenches was won by St. Bonaventure."

Freshman guard Jordan Dartis, averaging 11 points per game, did not travel to the game due to sickness. Fellow freshman James Gollon made up in part for his absence with eight points, all in the first half.

The Bobcats face Cleveland State at 1 p.m. Saturday at Quicken Loans Arena.
