Big 2nd half lifts Bobcats past Thundering Herd

Simmons has 25 points, 6 assists

ATHENS – Jaaron Simmons scored 25 points and added six assists and five rebounds as Ohio used a big second half to defeat Marshall, 85-70, on Tuesday night at The Convo.

With the game tied at the half, the Bobcats (4-2) outscored the Thundering Herd (0-4) 49-34 after the intermission, shooting 56.3 percent.

Kenny Kaminski added 15 points, Treg Setty scored 10 points, and Antonio Campbell had seven points and 15 rebounds.

"I'm excited. The pieces are there. They are,” Ohio coach Saul Phillips said. “We've got to be hungry to play better. We've got to look at our destination as being something that's further out there and we have to push ourselves to get there."

James Kelly helped Marshall get out to a quick 9-1 lead, scoring seven of his 18 points in the first four minutes, but Ohio worked its way back to a 36-36 tie at the break and went ahead for good in the first two minutes of the second half.

Leading 52-48, the Bobcats used a 10-0 run to pull away. It began with a Simmons layup and concluded with a Simmons jumper with 10 minutes left, making it 62-48.

Ohio later used an 8-0 run to take its biggest lead, 83-65, with 1:25 remaining.

C.J. Burks led Marshall with 20 points.

Turnovers were a problem again for the Bobcats, who had 19 of them, including seven by Simmons. The Thundering Herd had 15 turnovers.

Wadly Mompremier had a strong performance of eight points and seven rebounds in only 15 minutes off the bench for Ohio, which outrebounded Marshall, 45-34.

The Bobcats got to the foul line far more often, going 19 of 31 (61.3 percent). The Thundering Herd was just 7 of 11 (63.6 percent) and shot only 38.2 percent from the floor in the second half.

Ohio plays at 4 p.m. Saturday at St. Bonaventure.
