Florida State makes late run to pull away from Ohio

Bobcats struggle on defense, with turnovers again

ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands – Ohio overcame an early run by Florida State but could not answer one in the second half as the Seminoles defeated the Bobcats, 90-81, on Monday in the final game of the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam.

Ohio (3-2) managed to take the lead in the second half despite falling behind 15-2 to start the game, but Florida State (4-1) finished strong and pulled away down the stretch. The Bobcats finished 1-2 in the tournament.

Freshman Jordan Dartis had another big game for the Bobcats, scoring 24 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including a 4-of-7 mark from long range, and Kenny Kaminski continued his hot shooting in the islands by matching Dartis with a 4-of-7 3-point performance and scoring 18 points. Antonio Campbell had a double-double for the second straight game, finishing with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

As was the case in a tournament-opening loss to Tulsa, defense was the struggle for Ohio. The Bobcats allowed the Seminoles to shoot 54.4 percent, including 64.3 percent in the first half when Florida State built a 45-38 advantage.

Dwayne Bacon had 25 points and seven rebounds, and Malik Beasley had 22 points and five boards to lead the Seminoles. Boris Bojanovsky and Mayes-Xavier Rathan had 14 points each.

The other struggle was turnovers – 18 of them leading to 28 Florida State points. The Seminoles had 13 turnovers, allowing 18 points off of them.

"Too many times we let them out in transition, period," Ohio coach Saul Phillips said. "It’s easy to game plan that, but go ahead and try to do it against that length. It’s difficult. At one point, we had Jaaron on the bench with four fouls and two freshmen out there at the one and the two, and they did a decent job. We are very much a work in progress. I get that, but a lot of positive came out of this weekend. We’re certainly going to double down and learn a lot more when we get them back to Athens and get them in the film room."

Ohio point guard Jaaron Simmons had an up-and-down tournament that included a 30-point performance in the opener, but Monday he struggled, finishing with just three points, seven assists and seven turnovers and fouling out.

After Ohio fell behind 5-0, Campbell got it on the board with a basket inside, but the Bobcats could not get a stop to start the game. The Seminoles hit their first six field goals and two free throws without a turnover to build a 13-point advantage in just four minutes.

Dartis had three 3-pointers and a pair of free throws in less than three minutes, helping the Bobcats cut their deficit to 23-19 midway through the first half, but that was as close as Ohio got in the half. Florida State went back up 13, 39-26, with five minutes left and took a seven-point advantage into the locker room.

A Dartis basket with 10:43 remaining in the game tied it at 59, and Dartis hit a 3-pointer to put the Bobcats ahead for the first time, 62-59. After both teams missed, Beasley tied the game with a trey, and then a Bacon jumper put the Seminoles back in the lead for good.

Ohio stayed close until the final four minutes. Dartis’ three-point play with 3:58 remaining made it 75-71, but Florida State scored six straight to go back up by double-digits, and the Seminoles led by as many as 13 points in the final minute.

Dartis was coming off a two-point game against Norfolk State, but in the two games before that, he had 14 points against Tulsa and 17 points against Tennessee State.

"Jordan Dartis apparently has something against the ACC, because he was just tremendous tonight," Phillips said. "Twenty-four points for a freshman against a team with that length is really something. He doesn’t look anything like a freshman, in any way, shape, form. Again, he not only had to score for us; he had to put the ball on the deck and handle it against some pretty good pressure."

Kaminski was 1 for 12 on 3-point tries in his first two games, but went 12 of 23 in three games in the Virgin Islands.

Ohio hosts Marshall at 7 p.m. Dec. 1 at The Convo.
