Broncos pull away with late run

Ohio stays close until final 6 minutes

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - A late 11-0 run lifted Western Michigan to an 80-69 victory against Ohio on Wednesday night at University Arena.

Ryan Taylor's 3-pointer put the Bobcats ahead 67-65 with six minutes remaining, but they did not score again for five minutes and the Broncos pulled away.

Javarez Willis went 5-of-10 from long range and finished with 21 points to lead Ohio (9-15, 4-9 Mid-American Conference). Maurice Ndour had 12 points and six rebounds, Treg Setty scored 11 points, and Antonio Campbell finished with 10 points and five boards.

Austin Richie paced Western Michigan (16-10, 7-6 MAC) with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Connor Tava had 15 points and seven rebounds, and David Brown and Kellen McCormick finished with 12 points each.

Richie and Tava had back-to-back baskets to put the Broncos back in front with 4:45 remaining, and Ndour and Willis both missed open looks on the next possession that could have tied it or put the Bobcats ahead. Instead, Richie hit two free throws to extend the Western Michigan lead to 71-67 at the 4:14 mark.

Ohio then had turnovers on four of its next five possessions, and the Broncos eventually were able to add to their lead to close out the victory.

Setty had a steal a dunk that followed his own 3-pointer to put Ohio up 12-11 with 13:49 left in the first half. Western Michigan eventually pushed out to its biggest lead until the final minute at 26-19 with 8:32 to go in the period with a Drake Lamont layup that made the score 26-19, but the Bobcats closed to within two at 38-36 by the half.

Ohio twice got as close as one early in the second half and tied the game at 49 on a Setty jumper with 13:01 remaining before Western Michigan matched its biggest lead to that point with a 7-0 run. As he did when the Broncos got out to the seven-point edge in the first half, Willis knocked down a timely 3-pointer.

Willis tied the game at 59 with a trey at the 8:09 mark, but Richie answered it. Two possessions later, Willis connected again, and Setty briefly put Ohio in front with a layup with 6:33 to go.

The Broncos shot 51.9 percent and made 15-of-20 free throws, while the Bobcats shot 47.5 percent but were only 5-of-7 at the foul line. Western Michigan also outrebounded Ohio 36-23 with 10 offensive boards despite not missing many shots.

Ndour got into foul trouble early but managed to play 27 minutes without fouling out.

Ohio hosts Kent State at 2 p.m. Saturday in its "Blackout" game at The Convo.
