Petteway, Shields lead Nebraska past Ohio

Bobcats finish 1-2, in 6th place in Diamond Head Classic

HONOLULU - Ohio stayed close throughout but never led and fell 71-58 to Nebraska in the fifth-place game of the Diamond Head Classic on Thursday.

The Bobcats trailed 32-30 at halftime and still were within four with eight minutes left, but the Cornhuskers pulled away.

Javarez Willis led Ohio (4-6) with 15 points, while Maurice Ndour had 12 points but only one rebound and struggled with foul trouble.

Terran Petteway and Shavon Shields had 22 points apiece for Nebraska (7-4).

Each time Ohio made a run in the second half to get close, Nebraska answered. Willis got the Bobcats to within two at 41-39 with 15:46, but the Cornhuskers were able to push their lead out to 55-45.

A Treg Setty 3-pointer closed the gap to 57-53 at the eight-minute mark, and an Antonio Campbell triple made it 65-58 with 2:53 remaining, but Nebraska held off Ohio and scored the final six points.

Nebraska began the game by getting out to a 10-2 lead. Ohio tied the game at 22 on a Setty jumper and again at 30 with a Willis 3-pointer. Petteway hit two free throws with five seconds left in the half to put the Cornhuskers in front at the midway point.

Laster and Campbell scored eight points each. Willis led Ohio in rebounds with eight and assists with four, but also had five turnovers while playing all 40 minutes.

Even with Khari Harley out with back spasms, Chandler Thomas not on the trip and Ndour only able to get 25 minutes, Wadly Mompremier, a starter early in the season, played only one minute as Ohio went with a seven-man rotation.

The Bobcats shot just 38 percent, while the Cornhuskers finished at 45 percent. Nebraska also had a big advantage at the foul line, going 21 of 27, compared to 11 of 15 by Ohio.

David Rivers finished with eight points and 13 rebounds for Nebraska. Petteway had 10 boards.

Ohio closes its non-conference schedule at 7 p.m. Tuesday against UNC-Wilmington at The Convo.
