Ohio goes scoreless in overtime after rallying

Bobcats go 0-for-9 from field in OT in loss to Purple Aces

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Ohio rallied from down six in the final four minutes to force overtime, but the Bobcats went scoreless in the extra minutes and fell 81-69 to Evansville on the road Thursday night.

Javarez Willis hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 47 seconds left and Ohio got multiple stops of the Purple Aces in the remaining seconds, but the Bobcats (3-4) missed all nine field goal attempts and one free throw try in overtime.

Maurice Ndour led four Ohio players in double-figures with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Willis scored 12 points, and Antonio Campbell and Stevie Taylor had 10 points each.

D.J. Balentine led Evansville (8-2) with 23 points to go with eight rebounds and six assists. Egidiju Mockevicius had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Blake Simmons had 14 points.

The Purple Aces went 23-of-28 at the foul line, while the Bobcats were 2 of 3.

Evansville used an 11-0 run to turn a five-point deficit into a six-point lead late in the second half. The Purple Aces trailed 52-52 after a Wills 3-pointer, but the Bobcats went scoreless for more than four minutes.

Willis finally ended the drought with a layup with 4:17 remaining, and after Balentine answered to put Evansville back up six, Taylor drained a 3-pointer to make it a one-possession game. Balentine and Ndour traded baskets, and after another Ndour basket, Jaylon Brown scored to put the Purple Aces up 69-66 with one minute left before Willis' tying trey.

Neither team led by more than four in the first half, and Mike Laster's putback gave Ohio a 38-36 halftime advantage. The Bobcats had their biggest lead was 50-44 with 14:10 remaining on a Wadly Mompremier layup.

Evansville shot 50 percent in the game, compared to 41.4 percent by Ohio, but the Bobcats made five more 3-pointers, had four more offensive rebounds and committed two fewer turnovers.

With Ryan Taylor still recovering from mononucleosis, Treg Setty made his first career start, finishing with eight points and three rebounds. After missing Saturday's game, Ryan Taylor returned but played only seven minutes, scoring four points.

Campbell fouled out in only 16 minutes of action, and Setty fouled out in 26 minutes. Ndour and Willis both had early technical fouls. Ndour and Mompremier each finished four fouls, and that contributed to redshirt freshman Khari Harley playing a career-high 38 minutes. He was just 1-of-6 from the field.

Things get no easier for the Bobcats as they travel to Honolulu for the Diamond Head Classic. They face George Washington in the first round at 2:30 p.m. Monday in the Stan Sheriff Center.
