Ndour, Willis help Bobcats overcome Golden Lions

Ohio pulls away in final 5 minutes

ATHENS – Maurice Ndour scored 21 points and added 12 rebounds, and Ohio pulled away late for a 69-60 victory against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Tuesday night at The Convo.

Pine Bluff (1-5) had the game tied at 54 with 4:22 remaining, but Ohio (2-1) held a 15-6 advantage the rest of the way.

Javarez Willis had 16 points, five rebounds and four assists, Mike Laster scored 10 points and had four boards, and Antonio Campbell finished with nine points and seven rebounds.

Marcel Mosley led the Golden Lions with 20 points, though it came on 7-of-20 shooting, and Ghiavonni Robinson had 15 points.

Tevin Hammond tied the game at 54 with less than five minutes remaining, but Ryan Taylor’s free throws at the 4:22 mark gave Ohio the lead for good. Javarez Willis had a steal and finished one-on-one on the other end to push the lead to four, and Ndour hit a pair at the foul line for a 60-54 lead with 2:47 to go.

Mosley had a free throw and later a jumper to get the Golden Lions back to within a possession, but Ndour scored a three-point play on the other end, and Treg Setty hit two free throws to make it an eight-point game with 1:17 remaining.

Hammond hit another 3-pointer, but it was answered by a Taylor layup, and Laster closed out scoring with a couple of free throws.

The Bobcats led 30-28 at halftime, but after a Willis jumper to begin the second half, the Golden Lions scored seven straight points. Willis drained a 3-pointer, Laster hit two free throws and an Ndour dunk capped a 7-0 run.

Pine Bluff went up by four at the 14:16 mark, before another Willis trey ultimately gave the lead back to the Bobcats. The Golden Lions never led again, though they tied the score three times after that.

Neither team had an advantage of more than four points in the first half, though Willis hit a couple of 3-pointers in a 10-2 run shortly before the break that flipped the lead.

Willis went 4 of 7 from long range and 6 of 9 overall. The rest of the Bobcats were 0 for 10 beyond the arc, including 0 for 5 by Stevie Taylor, who missed all seven of his shot attempts overall and went scoreless with seven turnovers and only one assist in 24 minutes.

Pine Bluff shot just 32.8 percent, including 7 of 28 on 3-pointers. Ohio shot 44.9 percent and outscored the Golden Lions 21-11 at the foul line.

The Bobcats are home again at 7 p.m. Saturday when they face Belmont.
