Western Michigan shoots nearly 60 percent, runs away late

Four Broncos finish with 18 or more points


KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan shot 59.6 percent in the game and outscored Ohio 36-17 over the final 9:15 to run away with a 90-74 victory at University Arena on Wednesday night.

Stevie Taylor hit a 3-pointer with 9:27 to give Ohio a 57-54 lead, but Western Michigan dominated the rest of the half.

Maurice Ndour led the Bobcats (16-6, 6-3 Mid-American Conference) with 20 points, Nick Kellogg scored 13 points and T.J. Hall and Taylor scored 12 points apiece.

Austin Richie finished with 22 points, David Brown added 20 points and Shayne Whittington and Connor Tava had 18 points each for the Broncos (13-8, 6-3 MAC).

Ohio was in control in the first half, going ahead 25-14 on a Javarez Willis 3-pointer with 8:53 remaining. Taylor later hit a jumper that gave the Bobcats a 36-27 lead, but the Broncos gained the lead with the final 10 points of the half.

Kellen McCormick answer Taylor’s 3-pointer to tie the game for the last time with 9:09 remaining, Taylor Perry scored a free throw, Richie drained a 3-pointer and Whittington completed a three-point play to give the Broncos a 64-57 lead.

Ndour had a dunk to cut Ohio’s deficit to five, but Richie capped a 10-2 run with a jumper in the paint to push Western Michigan’s lead to 13 with 4:41 remaining. The Bobcats got only as close as nine on a Travis Wilkins 3-pointer with 2:45 left.

Western Michigan connected on 8 of 13 3-point tries and dominated at the foul line, going 26 of 35, compared to only 7 of 11 by Ohio. The Bobcats shot 51.9 percent and made 11 of 23 attempts from beyond the arc.

Ohio hosts Miami at 2 p.m. Saturday.
