Bobcats overcome slow start, roll past Student Princes

Ohio outscores Heidelberg 63-33 over the final 29 minutes

ATHENS – Ohio overcame a sluggish start to blow out Division III Heidelberg, 85-57, at The Convo on Saturday.

The Bobcats trailed 24-22 more than midway through the first half but outscored the Student Princes 63-33 the rest of the game.

Nick Kellogg caught fire late in the first half and finished with a game-high 18 points, while Jon Smith made 7 of 8 shots and scored 11 of his career-high 17 points after halftime. Ricardo Johnson and T.J. Hall added 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Only 11 minutes into the game, Mike Petrie hit his fourth 3-pointer of the afternoon to put Heidelberg (1-2) on top 24-22.

Two minutes later, Kellogg hit a pair of free throws and then drained a 3-pointer to start a 14-0 run. He added another trey and a layup and Smith scored twice in the paint as the Bobcats surged ahead 36-24 and took a 38-29 lead into the locker room.

Frank Longhino scored in the paint to get Heidelberg within three, 45-42, four minutes into the second half, but it was all Ohio after that. Hall scored back-to-back baskets and after he missed a 3-pointer, Maurice Ndour came up with the offensive rebound and dunked it to put the Bobcats ahead 51-42.

The Bobcats (4-1) had a 10-0 run during the middle of the second half with Kellogg scoring the first eight of those points on a pair of 3-pointers and two free throws. Two Smith free throws put Ohio ahead 63-45.

A Johnson 3-pointer, a Stevie Taylor layup, a Hall 3-pointer and two Travis Wilkins three throws were part of a 10-2 Ohio run that made it an 80-52 game with 3:29 remaining.

After shooting 42.9 percent in the first half, the Bobcats connected on 60.7 percent of their shots in the second half. The Student Princes shot 32.7 percent for the game.

Ndour led Ohio on the boards with 11 rebounds. Smith and Johnson had eight apiece, while Taylor passed out seven assists.

Keith Mackie scored 15 points and Deonte Holder had 12 for Heidelberg.

Ohio hosts Mercer at 7 p.m. Tuesday at The Convo.
