ATHENS – Ohio had its best offensive performance of the year, putting all five starters in double figures in an 88-81 victory against Marshall on Saturday at The Convo.
Jackson Paveletzke led the way with 22 points, while Aidan Hadaway had a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds. Javon Sams, JJ Kelly and Ajay Sheldon added 13, 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The Bobcats (3-5) hit a season-high 10 3-pointers on 24 attempts and had the lead throughout the entire second half after taking a 40-34 advantage into the locker room.
Noah Otshudi led the Thundering Herd (5-4) with 21 points, with Wyatt Fricks adding 18 points and eight rebounds. Jalen Speer had 13 points.
A Paveletzke jumper with 8:47 left in the first half gave Ohio the lead for good at 20-18. Kelly added a fastbreak layup.
A few minutes later, Shmarrie Hugie drained a 3-pointer that got Marshall to within one, but Paveletzke answered with a 3-pointer of his own, and that started a 13-2 run that was capped with a Simmons three-point play that made it 38-26 with 3:18 left in the half.
Marshall cut its deficit to six by halftime, but Ohio pushed the lead back to double digits on a Hadaway 3-pointer. Eight straight points by the Thundering Herd quickly cut the deficit to three, with Caleb Hollenbeck’s trey making it 48-45.
Kelly answered with a 3. Then, when a Speer layup made it a two-point game, Sheldon knocked down a triple.
Finally, midway through the second half, the Bobcats made a run to get separation. Dior Conners connected from long range, followed by another Sheldon 3-pointer, putting the score at 73-63. Sheldon had another 3, and Simmons scored after an offensive rebound to put Ohio ahead by 13.
The lead eventually maxed out at 16 on a pair of Paveletzke free throws with 2:26 remaining. The Bobcats did not score again, but they did not need to.
Ohio shot 48.3% overall and got to the foul line often, going 20 of 29. Marshall shot 47.6% but was only 6 of 24 on 3-pointers.
The Bobcats look to add to their winning streak when they take on St. Bonaventure at 5 p.m. Saturday as part of the Cleveland Hoops Showdown at Rocket Arena in Cleveland.
