Bobcats have no answer for Zips' 20 3-pointers

McAdams, Cheatham Jr. score 21 points each as Akron clinches regular season title

AKRON – Kwan Cheatham Jr. and Reggie McAdams scored combined for 12 3-pointers and scored 21 points each as Akron defeated Ohio, 91-76, to clinch the Mid-American Conference regular season title Tuesday night at James A. Rhodes Arena.

McAdams hit seven treys, and Cheatham finished with five, and they were not alone as the Zips (23-7, 12-5 MAC) as a team were 20 of 43 (46.5 percent) from beyond the arc. Antino Jackson (12 points), Jake Kretzer (11) and Noah Robothan (10) all had multiple 3-pointers and reached double-figure scoring.

Jaaron Simmons paced the Bobcats (19-10, 10-7 MAC) with 25 points and seven assists, and Treg Setty, Kenny Kaminski and Jordan Dartis had 13 points apiece. For the second straight game, Antonio Campbell struggled offensively, going 4 of 13 for nine points with 11 rebounds.

Cheatham hit a 3-pointer and then McAdams two of them to give Akron an early 9-0 lead, and the Zips pushed it to 15-2 with two more McAdams 3-pointers. Jackson’s 3-pointer with 11:32 left in the first half pushed Akron’s lead to 27-12, and two minutes later, Cheatham followed yet another McAdams 3-pointer with a layup to make it 32-13.

Ohio battled back, though, with an 11-0 run that included a pair of Setty layups and was capped off by a Setty 3-pointer that made it 32-24 with 5:20 left in the half. A 7-0 run got the Bobcats to within 33-31 on a Dartis three-point play, and they trailed by two after a Simmons jumper. Robotham hit a 3-pointer before the half, though, to make it 42-37.

Kaminski began the second half with a 3-pointer for Ohio, but two points was as close as Ohio got. Akron scored seven straight points and went up by double digits again on a McAdams trey with 16:52 left in the game. Ohio did not get closer than eight after that.

McAdams cooled off in the second half after going 6-of-11 on 3-pointers in the first, but Cheatham went 4-of-8 from deep after the break.

After a nine-point, eight-rebound first half, Campbell was 0 for 5, did not score and had only three rebounds in the second half. Simmons scored 17 points after halftime.

Ohio shot 46.8 percent and Akron 43.2 percent, but the Zips had 12 more made 3-pointers and got more shots as a result of 18 offensive rebounds. Cheatham finished with 12 boards while the Zips played without starting center Pat Forsythe because of an injury.

Despite the loss, the Bobcats remained tied for second overall in the league because of a Ball State loss. With wins Tuesday, Kent State and Central Michigan moved into the second-place tie, while Buffalo (9-8 MAC) dropped to a game back of second with a loss to Miami.

The Bobcats face the RedHawks at 7 p.m. Friday at Millett Hall in Oxford.
