Simmons has big game; Dartis hits big shots in Ohio win

Bobcats sweep Bulls with 103-96 overtime victory

ATHENS – Jaaron Simmons had 31 points and eight assists, but it was freshman Jordan Dartis who hit the two most clutch shots for his only points as Ohio took a 103-96 overtime victory against Buffalo on Saturday at The Convo.

Dartis’ 3-pointer with 1:04 remaining tied the game at 85, and in overtime, Dartis struck again with a 3-pointer with 1:31 left that put the Bobcats up for good, 96-93.

Treg Setty had 24 points and nine rebounds, and Kenny Kaminski finished with 22 points and five boards to help Ohio (19-9, 10-6 Mid-American Conference) overcome a rare off game by Antonio Campbell, who had just six points on 2-of-7 shooting with nine rebounds.

Willie Conner had 28 points, and Blake Hamilton finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds for the Bulls (16-13, 9-7 MAC).

Lamonte Bearden, who did not play because of a suspension in the team’s first meeting, had 14 points and put Buffalo up 85-80 with a layup with 2:49 to go. Campbell scored a minute later to make it a three-point game, and Dartis’ first basket tied it. Three missed shots later, the game went to overtime.

Rodell Wigginton put Buffalo up 92-91 with a layup before two Mike Laster free throws put Ohio back on top. Hamilton split two free throws to tie it with 1:52 remaining before Dartis’ second big shot at the 1:31 mark.

Simmons answered two Hamilton free throws with two of his own, and after one foul shot by Beardon, the Bobcats went up 100-96 on two Gavin Block free throws with 14 seconds left. After a missed Jarryn Skeete 3-pointer, a personal foul and two technicals, Block hit three more free throws to close it out.

Buffalo led for more of the game than Ohio. The Bulls took an early 17-7 lead on a Wiggington layup and then a 20-10 advantage on two Nick Perkins free throws.

The Bobcats slowly worked their way back into the game before a 10-0 run that included a pair of Kaminski 3-pointers moved Ohio in front 40-35 with 2:41 left in the half. Setty hit two of three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt in the final second, making it 48-42 at the half.

Another Kaminski 3-pointer gave the Bobcats a 51-43 lead early in the second half, but Buffalo responded with a 14-0 run to surge ahead, 57-51. Campbell finally ended the run with a basket inside, but Conner connected on a trey to give Buffalo a seven-point edge. It eventually went up by 10 with 11:54 remaining.

An 11-2 run brought Ohio back to within one, 70-69, on a Block layup with 7:51 to go, and the Bobcats tied the game at 76 on a Setty 3-pointer at the 4:58 mark.

Buffalo dominated points in the paint, 50-28, and had 15 offensive rebounds while shooting 45.2 percent. Ohio shot 46.8 percent from the field and made a living at the foul line, going 35 of 49.

Setty, Campbell, Hamilton, Wiggington, Perkins and the Bulls’ Ikenna Smart all fouled out, and Buffalo's Conner, Bearden, and CJ Massinberg and Ohio's Simmons all finished with four fouls.

Massinburg, a freshman who scored 36 points in Buffalo’s 94-75 loss to Ohio in New York, had only eight points this time on only four shot attempts. Campbell had 28 for the Bobcats in the first meeting against the Bulls but did not attempt a shot in the first half this time.

Ohio can earn a share of first place when it faces Akron at 8 p.m. Tuesday at James A. Rhodes Arena.
