Simmons scores 25, Campbell has 16 points, 20 rebounds

Bobcats top short-handed RedHawks, 76-64

ATHENS – Jaaron Simmons scored 25 points, and Antonio Campbell had 16 points and 20 rebounds as Ohio built a big lead and held off a second-half Miami rally for a 76-64 victory Saturday at The Convo.

Winners of five straight and seven of the last eight, the Bobcats (18-8, 9-5 Mid-American Conference) scored six straight to begin the second half and go up 47-24, but the RedHawks (9-18, 3-11 MAC) quickly got back into it, getting as close as 54-49 on a Abdoulaye Harouna 3-pointer with 8:02 remaining.

Simmons missed much of that stretch with four fouls, but he re-entered and Ohio pulled away down the stretch.

Dion Wade had 16 points, and Harouna had 15 points for the short-handed RedHawks, who had four players sitting out due to a violation of team rules.

Ohio took control early with a 17-0 run. Down 5-2, the Bobcats exploded with a Gavin Block layup, a Campbell dunk and then three straight 3-pointers – one by Simmons and two by Block. Simmons hit two free throws, and then a Treg Setty layup made it 19-5.

The Bobcats led 41-24 at halftime and then went up by 23 points with two baskets by Simmons and one by Campbell in the first three minutes of the second half.

Ohio’s lead was still 20 when Wade hit a pair of treys with a Kalif Wright jumper in between, making it a 12-point game. After a Jordan Dartis layup, Miami ran off seven points in a row, and Harouna’s 3-pointer came after a Campbell free throw, capping a 22-6 run.

Dartis hit a timely 3-pointer, and after a Wright layup, Campbell scored inside, Dartis hit another trey and then Campbell made a free throw to push the lead to 12. Miami got only as close as nine after that.

Block finished with 14 points, and Dartis and Setty added eight and seven points, respectively. Dartis also had six rebounds and four assists.

Eric Washington finished with nine points and eight assists for Miami. Wade had seven boards for the RedHawks, who were outrebounded 35-26.

Ohio held a big advantage at the foul line, going 18 of 23, while Miami was just 8 of 15.

The Bobcats play Bowling Green at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Stroh Center.
