Campbell, Ohio continue to stay hot

Forward scores career high 33 as Bobcats win 4th straight

ATHENS – Antonio Campbell and Ohio continued their recent tear Tuesday night. Campbell scored a career-high 33 points and added 11 rebounds as the Bobcats coasted to an 86-64 victory against Eastern Michigan at The Convo.

It was the Bobcats’ fourth straight win and Campbell’s third straight game with 26 or more points. It also was the sixth win in seven games and the fourth time in six games Campbell topped 26 points.

Campbell went 14 of 20 from the field, including 3 of 5 from long range and got plenty of support from Jordan Dartis with 18 points and Treg Setty with 16 points.

"I think the confidence level for this team is high, especially myself," Campbell said. "I'm playing well and trying to get better."

Willie Mangum IV led the Eagles (13-13, 5-8 Mid-American Conference) with 19 points, while Tim Bond had 14 points. Freshman sensation James Thompson IV had 11 points but was disqualified with his second technical foul with 9:40 remaining.

Ohio (17-8, 8-5 MAC) had an early 8-0 run to go up double digits. Leading 16-14, Ohio got a Dartis layup and the back-to-back Campbell 3-pointers to take a 24-14 advantage.

Eastern Michigan answered, though, scoring 12 of the next 14 points to take a 28-26 lead with 5:30 left before halftime, but Campbell took over the remainder of the half.

A Campbell putback tied the game at 28. He came up with a steal and then scored another second-chance basket while being fouled, then converted the free throw for the three-point play.

After another steal, Campbell missed inside, but on the next possession, Campbell assisted a Doug Taylor layup. Campbell scored in the paint and then threw down a slam a minute before halftime to cap an 11-0 run. After a Tim Bond 3-poitner for the Eagles, Campbell answered with one of his own to make it 40-31 at the break.

After trailing by as much as 14, Eastern Michigan got to within seven on a Bond layup with 10:24 to go. Treg Setty added to Ohio’s lead with a layup on a Campbell assist. Less than 30 seconds later, Thompson IV was called for his fourth foul and then a technical foul, giving Dartis four free throws and Ohio a 62-49 lead. A bucket by Campbell and a Setty free throw capped a 9-0 run.

After that, the Eagles got only as close as 13 on Raven Lee’s 3-pointer with 5:45 to go, and Dartis and Setty answered with back-to-back 3-pointers. Campbell’s basket with four minutes left pushed Ohio’s lead to 21.

With Kenny Kaminski missing the game with a head injury, freshman Gavin Block made his first career start and contributed five points and nine assists, eclipsing the career mark of seven he set Friday night against Buffalo. Taylor, another freshman, had four points and seven rebounds in just nine minutes.

Jaaron Simmons had a quiet game with just three points, three rebounds and six assists.

Ohio shot 48.3 percent from the field, including 53.3 percent in the first half. The Bobcats were 10 of 23 on 3-pointers and 18 of 23 on free throws. Eastern Michigan shot 42.3 percent and made 14 of 19 foul shots.

The Bobcats dominated the boards, 42-25, leading to a 17-4 advantage in second-chance points.

Ohio hosts last place Miami at 2 p.m. Saturday at The Convo.
