Cold-shooting 2nd half sends Ohio to big loss

Bobcats finish below 30 percent in 2nd half

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Ohio went cold in the second half, shooting just 28 percent, and Central Michigan pulled away for a 72-49 victory Saturday at McGuirk Arena.

The Chippewas, on the other hand, shot 55.6 percent after the break to blow open a 35-28 halftime lead.

Luke Meyer and Braylon Rayson had 14 points each, and Chris Fowler had 11 points and nine assists in a balanced Central Michigan offense.

Antonio Campbell had 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead Ohio, but no one else had more than eight points for the Bobcats (11-7, 2-4 Mid-American Conference). Ohio was held to its lowest scoring total of the season.

"For a big chunk of the game, we defended well enough to win it,” Ohio coach Saul Phillips said. “The only thing we were able to establish at all, all night long, was Tony in the post."

Rayshawn Simmons and Josh Kozinski had back-to-back 3-pointers for the Chippewas to push their lead to 47-33 six minutes into the second half. Kenny Kaminski got one of them back for Ohio, but Central Michigan went up 15 on baskets by Meyer and Austin Stewart.

The Bobcats were never closer than 13 the rest of the way.

An early 8-0 run gave Ohio a 13-6 advantage barely more than five minutes into the game, but a Rayson 3-pointer tied the game at 18 at the 8:42 mark in the first half, and Meyer put the Chippewas ahead, 22-20, with 7:14 to go with a fast break bucket that began a 9-0 run.

Overall, the Bobcats were 19 of 52 (36.5 percent) from the field, including 3 of 16 (18.8 percent) from 3-point range. They made 8 of 12 free throws.

The Chippewas finished better than 50 percent in the game (30 of 59) and went 7 of 9 on foul shots. They were 5 of 20 on 3-pointers.

Jordan Dartis returned to the lineup for Ohio after missing two games because of a concussion, but he was 0 for 4 and scored only two points. Jaaron Simmons was 2 of 11 and had just six points and five assists with five turnovers.

"We thought we were executing well,” Campbell said. “The shots just weren't falling. It's a matter of knocking down shots. We had good looks."

Ohio faces Toledo at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Savage Arena.
