Simmons, Campbell lead Bobcats past Broncos

Block, Laster also step up with big efforts

ATHENS – Jaaron Simmons had 24 points and nine assists, and Antonio Campbell recorded a double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds as Ohio ran away in the second half with an 82-64 victory against Western Michigan on Tuesday night at The Convo.

Gavin Block had 16 points and five rebounds in 33 minutes off the bench, while Kenny Kaminski hit 4 of 7 3-pointers and scored 14 points for Ohio (11-6, 2-3 Mid-American Conference).

"The storylines are pretty obvious with Tone and Jaaron, but Gavin and Mike Laster, to me, tonight, were guys who stepped up,” Ohio coach Saul Phillips said.

Thomas Wilder paced the Broncos (7-11, 1-4 MAC) with 21 points, while Tucker Haymond had 15 points.

Ohio shot 57.1 percent in the second half while holding Western Michigan to 30.8 percent shooting.

Despite a 35-31 halftime lead, the Bobcats fell behind early in the second half with the Broncos scoring the first eight points after the break. Mike Laster answered with a 3-pointer, and Kaminski followed with one of his own, and Ohio did not trail again.

The Bobcats’ lead was just one, 49-48, with 10:37 remaining when an 8-0 run gave them separation. Simmons, who was 4 for 4 from deep, hit a pair of 3-pointers with a jumper in between.

"They helped off of me,” Simmons said. “I saw the first one go in, so I shot another one. I saw the next one in, so I shot another one. It just felt good today, and I was happy to see it go in."

Campbell pushed Ohio’s lead to double digits for the first time with a layup with seven minutes left that made it 60-49.

Wilder scored two free throws for the Broncos, but Simmons hit to at the line, and Western Michigan did not get the deficit under 11 after that.

The Broncos had a 14-0 run in the first half, taking a 27-18 lead on an Anthony Avery Jr. jumper at the 6:20 mark, but the Bobcats outscored their opponent 17-4 the rest of the half to move in front.

While Ohio was 11 of 20 on 3-pointers, Western Michigan was just 4 of 18. The Broncos’ 33.9 percent shooting overall was the lowest mark allowed by the Bobcats this year.

"We had to get over those ball screens,” Block said. “They were doing a good job, and they have good three-point shooters off of those pick-and-pops. They hit a couple early, but we took care of it and settled it. I think that really, really changed the game when we took away their 3-pointer."

The Bobcats had 14 turnovers to only seven by the Broncos, but Ohio had more rebounds, 45-32.

Freshman guard Jordan Dartis missed his second straight game after suffering a concussion in practice Friday, and forward Treg Setty was limited to 14 minutes because of sickness. That created bigger roles for Block and Laster, who had not seen much playing time recently. Laster had seven points in 18 minutes.

“Mike had a day in practice the other day that made me almost lose my mind in terms of we were trying to guard him and we couldn't do it,” Phillips said. “So, on a gut feel, we put him in."

Ohio travels to Mount Pleasant, Mich., to face Central Michigan at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
