Golden Flashes use 11-0 run to take control

KENT – Kent State went on an 11-0 run in the second half to pull away for an 89-82 victory against Ohio on Saturday night at the MAC Center.

With the game tied at 46, the Golden Flashes held the Bobcats scoreless for four minutes, moving ahead, 57-46.

Antonio Campbell and Kenny Kaminski each scored 21 points for the Bobcats, who led most of the first half. Treg Setty and Gavin Block both had 12 points, and Jaaron Simmons finished with eight points and nine assists.

Xavier Pollard led Kent State (12-5, 3-1 Mid-American Conference) with 23 points, and Kellon Thomas added 20 points. Jaylin Walker scored 16, and Jimmy Hall had 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Kent State pushed its second-half lead to as big as 74-58 with 6:02 remaining, but Ohio (10-6, 1-3 MAC) made it somewhat interesting down the stretch, getting as close as 84-80 on a Block 3-pointer with 32 seconds left. The Golden Flashes made 5 of 6 free throws after that to hold off the Bobcats.

Ohio went up 22-13 at the 11:02 mark in the first half on a Campbell layup, but Kent State scored nine straight to even it up barely more than two minutes later. The Bobcats held a small lead throughout most of the rest of the first half, but Chris Ortiz gave the Golden Flashes a 38-37 lead at halftime with a pair of free throws in the closing seconds.

Turnovers hurt Ohio, which had 15 of them, leading to 17 Kent State points. The Golden Flashes had only seven turnovers.

The Bobcats went 20 of 22 at the foul line, while the Golden Flashes were 27 of 36. Kent State outshot Ohio from the field, 47 percent to 46 percent.

Campbell had nine rebounds, and Kaminski grabbed eight boards.

Ohio got freshman guard Black back after an injury absence, but had another one sit out. Jordan Dartis sat out because of a head injury suffered in practice Friday.

The Bobcats host Western Michigan at 7 p.m. Tuesday at The Convo.
