Akron builds big early lead, blows out Ohio 86-65

ATHENS – Ohio shot just 32.8% on the night as Akron built a 22-point halftime lead and rolled to an 86-65 victory Friday night at The Convo.

Tavari Johnson scored 24 points to lead the Zips (16-4, 7-1 Mid-American Conference). Shammah Scott had 19 points off the bench.

Jackson Paveletzke and Javaon Simmons both had 16 points for the Bobcats (11-10, 5-4 MAC). JJ Kelly scored 12 points with four blocks.

"They're a veteran team, and they make you pay for every mistake you make," Ohio coach Jeff Boals said. "Coming into the game, we worried about their threes, rebounding, transition points, and I thought the whole first half, we were on our heels."

ATHENS – Northern Illinois’ comeback from 16 points down with 7:30 remaining came up just short as Gianni Cobb missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer and Ohio held on for an 80-77 victory Tuesday night at The Convo.

Jackson Paveletzke scored 23 points with four assists, Aidan Hadaway had 18 points, six assists and five rebounds, and JJ Kelly put up 17 points with nine rebounds to help the Bobcats (11-9, 5-3 Mid-American Conference) snap their two-game losing streak.

Cardinals snap 13-game losing streak against Division I foes


MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State held off a late push from Ohio to gets its first Mid-American Conference win of the season, 76-61, on Friday night at Worthen Arena.

The Bobcats (10-9, 4-3 MAC) got as close as one late after the Cardinals (5-13, 1-5 MAC) led 44-31 at halftime and 64-50 with eight minutes left.

Jackson Paveletzke had 22 points and four assists but split a pair of free throws that could have tied the game in the closing seconds. Aidan Hadaway added 22 points and seven rebounds but missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer. Javan Simmons tallied 13 points with six rebounds.
