UMass goes on late run to beat Ohio

Banks scores 31 points in Minutement's 94-82 victory

AMHERST, Mass. – After going back and forth with Ohio for 34 minutes, UMass went on a late 11-point run to wrap up its regular season with a 94-82 victory Tuesday night at the Mullins Center.

There were nine ties and 15 lead changes before the Minutemen went ahead for good on a Luka Damjanac fastbreak layup with 6:16 remaining.

Jackson Paveletzke led the Bobcats with 24 points and seven assists, while Javan Simmons had 16 points and five rebounds. Kiir Kuany, starting in place of JJ Kelly, scored 13 points with five rebounds in 27 minutes. Aidan Hadaway tallied 11 points and seven rebounds.

Marcus Banks had 31 points to lead the Minutemen. Leonar Bettiol added 17 points, and Dann Carbuccia tallied 13 points

Jayden Ndjigue made two free throws after a Bobcats turnover, and after Ajay Sheldon missed two foul shots, Banks scored a second-chance 3-pointer to make it 79-73 with five minutes left. Banks and Ndjigue both added two more free throws, pushing the lead to double digits at 83-73.

Kuany put back a Sheldon missed 3-pointer to finally end the run, but buckets by Damjanac and Banks made it a 12-point game, and the closest Ohio got after that was 89-82 with 1:36 left on a pair of Paveletzke free throws.

Before that, UMass had its biggest lead early at 21-13. Dior Conners hit three free throws, and Ohio gradually worked its way back into the game, tying it at 28 on a Jesse Burris jumper and then taking a 34-32 lead on a Paveletzke jumper. The Bobcats led 39-37 at halftime.

Ohio twice held a four-point lead early in the second half and each time Banks answered with a 3-pointer. He had a pair of them during an 8-0 run that putt the Minutemen on top 54-50. Sheldon connected from long range, and the teams duked it out evenly for the next six minutes.

The Bobcats shot 40.3% for the game despite going just 5-for-28 on 3-pointers. They were 23 of 29 on free throws. The Minutemen shot 52.6% overall and were 27 of 35 on free throws.

The Bobcats host still unbeaten and nationally ranked Miami in their regular season finale at 9 p.m. Friday at The Convo on ESPN2.
