Got that IG notification about two hours ago - would fill a need at PF / C position even if it is a PWO spot - met him a few times last year and very nice kid. Know his dad won't be easy on him that's for sure.

That's awesome for them as a family. Him as the coach, his son as a player. Imagine thinking that when you're a 20 year old at Ohio University eventually you would be the head coach and your son would be on the team. Crazy.

I figured this announcement wasn't too far away, but I also thought maybe he would play football. I haven't seen him since he hurt his knee last year, but he's OL size from what I recall. 6"4"-6"5" 250+.

Does he have any interest from other schools? I am fine stretching a little for a walk-on with family ties, but it has to be at least reasonable. If he is just completely overmatched in practice it could be an awkward distraction.

According to social, he visited Wilmington. At one point, there was a Tweet about him receiving an offer from Stony Brook (from Ford, not Boals) that has since been deleted.

That's all I could find.

Because of the family tie, does this need to be a PWO? Chase can attend for free and wouldn't take one of the 13 team scholarships? I'm right, right?

Couldn't find too much by way of stats either, guessing its essentially an extended manager role. Another way of spending time with his son, but I do agree - I don't know how others on the team might feel about it, but as long as it's not a distraction I have no problem with Boals wanting to keep it in the family. And maybe that keeps him happy and in Athens for a little longer and he doesn't bolt to Butler.

I think thats why he was given this opportunity. He won't ever be a scholarship player.

Chase isn't taking a scholarship from anyone, so it's a win for everyone involved. And as someone mentioned...I doubt Chase will ever be on scholarship because he can go to school for free I believe with his Dad working for the university.

As far as I'm concerned, he's not taking up a scholarship, so I have no issue with it.

I get that, but there are some potential problematic issues...

1. He is thrown in as one of the guys, but seen as a mole by the group. He could be socially exiled by some, which could be hurtful to Boals.
2. He could be so overmatched that the players are disgusted coach would be so blind to allow him on the roster and question his judgment.
3. Even if he never even considers giving him playing time, during preseason/practice he is overly fixated on his kid. Overrating good moments, easily irritated by bad moments.

I know I am not a professional coach, but everything is different with your own kid. It is inescapable. As long as the kid is a reasonable option to be a D1 talent and a good team player, it shouldn't be a problem. I am just thinking aloud.

According to Max Preps he was a 260 pound lineman at New Albany High.

As long as other students are allowed to try out to become walk-ons, I have no issue with this. However, wouldn't middle linebacker be more appropriate at 6-5 and 250?

https://www.hudl.com/video/3/14905562/639d55f590ef2311ece...
That last clip, a guy he outweighs by like 120 pounds tackles him to prevent a layup. That's dedication.

Feels like a "in case of emergency, break glass" situation for a practice body. I don't have a problem with that.

From what I have seen when he has visited - everyone on the team likes him a lot, at least from the outside.

All great points but I'll add some commentary:

1) I think this is a very real scenario and there will be some pressure on the kid to break this narrative. Lucky for him, I think Athens is one of the best places to do that in. The relationships he builds off the court will determine this fate.

2) I don't think this will be the case. Wiz set the bar pretty low here.

3) I think having his kid in practice (and especially the weight room) can be used to his advantage. Coach Boals can set the tone by how he coaches his own son. As long as he's fair, I can see it helping the team push themselves further in practice and in the weight room.

I LOL'd at #2...but at least he is a tall dude that can cause some disruption comparable to what they'll see in games. Putting an overmatched player into practice is a disservice to your scholarship players, you should be trying to replicate real games as much as possible. I just hope coach isn't stretching too far here...

Seriously? These guys have had dinner with this young man since they came to campus. He takes no money in anyway from anyone else. To pick on this one is personal and petty. You all may as well same thing about Ben Estis, as their fathers talk daily. And it’s a PWO, you can count one one hand nationally every year where a PWO player makes a difference in a game or conference tournament.

Find me a Mid Major where a PWO isn’t overmatched when the rubber meets the road. If they weren’t they wouldn’t be a PWO.

Billy, you don't need to react as though I said "F coach Boals for this horrible decision that will wreck the program, this kid is certifiably trash." I brought up some discussion points on the topic. I enjoy discussing things, that is why I am here. I asked questions, I did not attack...but this is a D1 basketball coach getting paid bags of cash, so spare me the sensitivity training.

Yes I was the travel baseball head coach of my eldest son for 6 years before he entered high school. But the team was selected by the program first, and I was named coach after. His talent levels were commensurate with the roster. While I deliberately tried my best to treat him like others, I will fully acknowledge his presence and how I reacted was challenging at times. My assistant and I had a deal to step in with each others kids when needed, because the Father/Son dynamics were always present. But this is a community based baseball team not a top third D1 basketball program.

Its definitely possible, not sure if Lil Boals is/was on the radar of college recruiting but I could see him utilizing the portal lol. Come to Ohio and get coached up by Dad for a year and then transfer to somewhere he can compete for playing time right away. His stop at Ohio could almost be like a resume builder to make himself more appealing to another program and to show that he belongs.

Have we ever had a coach's son rostered at Ohio before? I think its a fair topic on a fanboard, given the current state of our rostered big men. I don't see anybody bashing Boals or Lil Boals either, just discussion. Wiz caught a stray from me (he didn't deserve it lol) but what else is there to talk about during Defiance College week?

Todd Snyder was an all MAC player for three years , and also was named an All-American his senior year. He and Cleve Bryant were on the cover of a pre-season magazine and were called the best QB and receiver "team" returning for their senior year. He was drafted and played for the Atlanta Falcons for a number of years before a serious knee injury ended his career.
Todd turned down an offer from Woody his senior year in high school because the Buckeyes rarely threw the football.

I never before thought of a coach using his son as a mole, but now I want it to happen.

All-time O-Zone moment was when Patton of NIU got ejected. His son was at the line and we hit him with, "Where's your daddy?"
