What was the point of this game? How is a week long break followed by a scrimmage that we win by 80 a good thing at this point of the season? I don't get it.

This one made ZERO sense.

Austin Peay has SIX (6) transfers from Northwestern State.

The MAC should stop playing teams that are D3 (or D2, or NAIA), except for Miami.

We enjoy watching them blow a game to a non-D1 school every few years...

Apparently we had a roadie at a P5 penciled for this date, but it fell through.

You know what? I'm fine with this. Would have preferred a more competent non-D1, but a reset is fine and worked out to a benefit. This is a nice game to get Miles Brown back, Ike and Aidan a bunch of run, AJB a risk-free rest, and comfortability beyond the arc.

Shoutout to Estis for taking advantage of the PT.

Team high in FG and 3PT attempts. LOL. Somebody gave him the green light cause he went 1-7 and kept chucking.

These games are silly, but if I was Hunter or someone I would want to get an 'easy' triple double or something out of it.

Not that this should even really count but I think this ties the school record for margin of victory. Margin of victory not listed in record book, but I went through year-by-year records and it looks like Ohio beat Marietta 105-25 in the 1946-47 season. Hopefully it's another 75 years or so before we see such a thing.

I did the same and that's what I came up with too. It seemed these two games were the only two close to that margin.

Could have at least played undefeated John Carroll University and bring back Luke Frazier with his 16.5 points a game average!

Wow. My 15 year old son & I really enjoyed watching this game. Several moments of LOL at Defiance...bless their heart. It is hard to put into words how many tiers apart these 2 programs are. It's kind of ridiculous, just like UC-Clermont was last year, but whatever...if it happens once a year so be it.

Funny story. My son, let's just say, is NOT a Wiz fan. He has talked since last year about taking time to put together a lowlight reel of him. He was trying to convince me to help him do it over winter break and I'm poo pooing it saying it would take so much time and I'm not even sure how we would do it, etc. And right as I say that Gabe gets the breakaway and just completely slams his face into the ground. We laughed so hard, and my son declared it was a sign from God to put the lowlight reel together. It was great too in the 2nd half when he got another dunk and gingerly put it in while the Ohio bench chuckled.

Our entire roster played at least 15 minutes, but theirs actually did the same with 13 players playing 10+ mins and no one playing 20. I made the point here before, and I think I pissed several people off, but I stand by my belief that much of these D3 programs are basically scams to get people to come pay their exuberant private tuition in exchange for being able to say they "play college basketball." Most of these schools would not exist if not for exploiting kids desire to continue their high school glory days in their sport. Some of those kids on the court would not start at on an average D1 high school varsity team. If your kid really wants to be a "college athlete", they almost always can be.

Someone help me - I know D3 is non-scholarship and I think NAIA has some scholarship money. What kind of financial aid is available to be an athlete at Defiance? None? If it were me, no matter how much I'd want to be a college athlete, if it's not financially more prudent than being a regular student at a public university, there's no way I'd give a school like that any consideration.

I believe coaches at this level have it written in their contracts that they get bonuses for certain # of players on their roster. Bigger the roster, more $$ coming into the universities in tuition and fees.
Not sure it isn't in contracts of non-revenue sports at the DI level where scholarships are partial.

There was a private college in Jackson TN called Lambuth. When they were in financial distress, they actually went on a binge of offering football "scholarships" (equal to 10% of tuition) to get kids in the door who could brag about being "offered" by a college football program.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools opted not to renew Lambuth's accreditation in 2011. Due to both the financial and accreditation problems, the Board of Trustees voted in April 2011 to cease operations two months later.

The University of Memphis bought the campus and turned it into a satellite location. It has no athletic teams.

There definitely is financial aid available for practically all students, and for athletes schools really want, they will find all financial support possible. However, tuition is around $35,000, so the cost tends to remain huge.

Many of these schools do rely hugely on athletics to exist. My wife teaches at a Division II university with an enrollment of around 3,000 and it seems that nearly half of her students are athletes of some kind. It's probably not quite that much, or maybe it is because many of her classes are basically remedial English for students who basically have to do high school English over again. Many of them probably should not be in college at all, and in fact, are not in college for too long.

Defiance says its enrollment is about 650 students. It has 17 athletic teams, with 119 players on the football roster. Many of the other rosters have far more players listed than a typical Division I school (19 on the men's basketball roster, 21 on volleyball). As a whole, I'm certain that the majority of students at the school are athletes.

All these schools pitch the "scholarship" in the same way Kohl's pitches their sales. Here is a cheap T-shirt that "was 29.99" but you can have it for "19.99"...it was a $20 T-shirt all along. Then the kids can tell all their friends and family, for their entire lives, that they "went to college on a basketball scholarship"....and my wife can tell me she "saved money" at Kohl's.

On the other hand, D3 has a lot of elite academic schools like Johns Hopkins, Case Western Reserve, Swarthmore, Amherst, Williams, Carnegie Mellon, Oberlin, Kenyon, Rose Hulman, Wabash etc, and many of those have huge endowments. D3 also has public school leagues, like in Wisconsin, where the enrollments are 8 or 9 thousand. So there are D3 schools that appear to be scamming athletics to boost enrollment or even survive, but there are many D3s where that isn't the case.

Most Div. III schools do that for multiple sports. Otterbein "offered" my son $15,000 to play lacrosse. Their lacrosse program has grown from nothing to 60 players in 8 years -- that's a lot of tuition-paying students.

My older son was "offered" for football by Muskingum. They just inflate the sticker price then award you the difference and call it a scholarship. I wish he'd taken the Muskingum offer...

If I ever tried my hand at standup comedy, one of my bits would be about Kohl's cashiers. Rather than claiming the customer saved some ridiculous amount on a comparatively small purchase, the cashier would tell them, "Thanks to today's purchase, you'll never get cancer" or "Your first child will now be a masculine child..."

Just a ridiculous game. I'll never, ever understand why Boals schedules these games every year. I know other D-1 teams do it, but it should never be allowed. And I don't want to hear it's because nobody wants to play OHIO. Come on...our starting five isn't Snoopy Graham, Dave Jamerson, Gary Trent, Jason Preston and Walter Luckett.

Throw in Patrick Flomo and I'll take that six any day of the week.

Correct, every smaller college and university I know does this. Even if the kid quits the team, but stays in school their is a bonus of some type. I know of a few schools that do a combination of bonus to the coach, and then increase the team budget so they can get a couple perks and pork chops.

I forgot the game was on until after 8:00. Tapped in at the under 16 when it was 73-23 and dozed off from the under 12 to the under 8 when the lead hit something like 70. I'm surprised they didn't just let the cock run like they sometimes do in football blowouts. I wound up rooting for Defiance to make some baskets and at least get to 40.

I have to wonder if this is true for Ohio baseball, for example, when I see about 30 players in the dugout during a Bobcat game.
