I have to admit I did not see the second half of this game. Fortunately, my nine-year-old granddaughter had a game and I went to watch it. The bottom line is this team has way too many deficiencies, and lacks too much in its roster to be very successful. I am just hoping we can be in the top eight in the MAC.

Notes from presser -

Jaylin & Clayton very very not in mood - they only talked for two minutes. Many notes on how they need to communicate on defense and Clayton needs to get better at shot blocking. Boals made an interesting note in that all of our losses are single or double possession losses - we have to get better at the little things.
Miles Brown is confirmed to make his return against Defiance - man we could have used his defense tonight.

After these last 2 games I am quite concerned as to our ability to improve and at least match last year's W - L record of 19 wins.
I could go on about all the issues I see that needs improvement, but, there isn't enough space on this post to articulate them all.
Still a fan, however, something needs to give, maybe as simple as a starting line up change.

I think I dipped into the cookie jar a bit. Dark Star is for sure Dead. As one quotes " we will get by, we will survive " this loss was not acceptable to me. I'm usually critical of Wiz and encourage players as much as possible.. Clayton, you have come so far , and putting up incredible minutes this year! Please don't leave. It is unfortunate the staff staff couldn't get someone to help you w/minutes. Hardaway, I've given your hustle props 👏. However until you consistently put in 15/10 stop putting ice in your veins every time you score.. thank goodness the MAC has been notoriously bad so far this year.

I've got to say, for everything that went wrong, and everything that the Bobcats did wrong, it took an absolutely horrendous three by Anocili-Killen that miraculously banked in for Marshall to take the lead. That three misses like it should have--they had no one in to even contest a rebound--and we are talking about an entirely different ending. No, Ohio should not have let it come down to that, but that's some awful luck reminiscent of the GW game.

You can go back to the thread about the Otterbein "game" and see how there was concern about defending the dribble drive even back then. And how lack of size was allowing their 6-6 backup center to have some success against us.

It's all coming home to roost. Boals needs to have $$ saved up to go portal shopping. This no-legit-center thing is a failed experiment. While mid-major transfer big Malik Dia is averaging 16 & 6 per game. And since he transferred out of Vandy for non-academic reasons (i.e. - playing time)... my guess is he would be passing all of his classes. Probably on the dean's list.

Oh God. Considering our offense is 4 guards standing around the 3pt line waiting for someone to drive into traffic. Against a zone with length we might not score 40.

Quite a disappointing fade down the stretch. But I'll focus on a positive: AJ Clayton is BALLING OUT. Props to him. He has really developed an all-around game and is playing hard. Kudos, AJ. Keep it up!

When facing a man-to-man defense the offense should have AJ as the focus weapon. Have Hadaway, EJ the tank and Gabe do nothing but set the picked fence and try to free AJ with their screens and then turn and try to rebound his misses. The two guards can keep doing their thing but first look for AJ before seeking lanes of penetration to the basket away from the congestion of the screeners and AJ..

Clayton should be shooting about twenty 12 footers a night with three or four threes mixed in to keep em honest.

UPDATE: Dia had 22 against MTSU last night in 24 minutes off the bench.

The three tallest guys that played for Ohio combined for 23 vs MTSU.

Somebody hasn't been evaluating the portal correctly for big guys.

Condolences to people in the mid-state of TN who were slammed with a horrible weather event last night. A state of emergency has been declared in Clarksville where the Bobcats will be playing APSU soon.

I’m not sure if I missed it in portal thread, but did we pursue Malik Dia? If we had Myles Foster 10 points and 8 rebounds per game, this is probably a different discussion. Boals can sit here and complain about getting out-bid for a big man, but he really needed to figure it out as we all knew last spring this was going to be a massive problem. To not bring in one competent post presence is such a massive whiff.

There are three guys around 6-7/240 on the football roster. Time to see Albin about borrowing a guy or two. IDK is Dia was offered from the portal but he did have a mix of mid and p5 offers out of high school including WKU and Murray.

Just because you are 6’7” 240lbs doesn’t mean you can play DI basketball.

According to this, we did.

I understand what you're saying about playing to his strengths and sometimes within a possession you just have to take a few of these shots, but you do realize that a mid to long range 2 is literally THE WORST statistical shot you can possibly take on the floor outside of beyond half court heaves?

Not sure designing an offense around that is a recipe for success.

If Albin's seat is getting hot according to some fans (I've never been part of that small group), shouldn't Boals' be getting at least a little balmy? In fact, could it be argued that he should be the target of more criticism than Albin?

I've always said the standard for Ohio men's basketball should be a minimum of one NCAA Tournament appearance every four years. Boals has one in his first four years. So he has 3 1/2 years to get at least one more. And really 4 1/2 years because he didn't have a chance in year one to go to NCAA Tourney because of COVID.

Boals seat is not hot. But losing 4 games with this non-con schedule is discouraging. This staff needs to start hitting consistent triples and home runs with recruits. It's going to be very interesting to chart the progress of the Ben Nicols and Jesse Burris and Ayden Evans in coming years.

A few BB truisms ... and exceptions to the rule:

1) You win with guard play. This is true, a quality PG is worth his weight in gold. A solid/good PG who plays w/in his own strengths and weaknesses is solid silver. I'll take either.

1a) The exception to the rule is having a dominant offensive player at any perimeter position who can get his own any place, any time.

Fact: It's near impossible for a mid-major to get that elite gold PG, and a solid silver is hard to find as well, but doable. Dominant offensive perimeter players are just as hard to find.

2) Post players today aren't the dominant go-to players of yore like Shaq of the MAC and Brandon Hunter, especially in this league.

2a) The exception to the rule (at least so far this season) seems to be Akron and Kent State, who arguably have the two best post players in the league.

Fact: As Freeman/Akron and Payton/Kent prove (and Wilson last year) you don't have to be 6-10 to 7-foot to be a good post player. Both of those guys are 6-7ish, but know how to do their work around the basket.

THAT is where the recruiting comes in. Doesn't matter haw tall the post player is, just his ability to get his work done in the post. Even Toledo (arguably No. 3 team in the MAC) has a post presence, even if it is 6-2 Cochran.

I would argue, at this level, ... more than a PG and more than a dominant perimeter scorer, a good 'post' player may be the hardest player to recruit to this level.

Honestly, I've never been part of that extremely small minority of people that think Boals seat is balmy, but I would absolutely love to chuckle at someones argument.

He's 66-35 in the last three seasons with a MAC Championship and 1 NCAA Tournament W. Last season he dragged a team with NINE new players to 19 wins.

For comparison, during the same time frame Chris Holtmann at Ohio State is 64-31 also with one NCAA Tournament W.

Boals will rightfully take a some heat for failing to replace DW3, but his seat...? Since 1985, we have 4 NCAA Tournament wins. He has 1 of them.

Who else do you wanna do? Groce?

67-32... 1 MAC Championship... 0 NCAA Tournament Wins.

Senderoff?

72-29... 1 MAC Championship... 0 NCAA Tournament Wins.

Now that we've played this game, Mr. Balmy... whom do you think OU should bring in to replace Boals? Who is your current pillar of MAC supremacy you wish to use as a gauge?

With that contract, his seat is colder than ice. I think it's fair to be skeptical of the direction the program is headed, though.
