They have strong academics. Good for him.

One of the top public institutions in the country. Campus is really cool. It goes right up the side of a hill. You can see San Francisco and the Bay off in the distance. I love Cal!

He was offered to play at several Ivy League schools out of high school. That wouldn't have been under a full scholarship from the athletic department because that isn't how Ivys operate but they also don't usually give big academic exceptions for athletes so it still says a lot. The fact that he transferred up made me question our assumption that the main reason he transferred is that Navarro was looking set to be the starter. But I am still guessing that was the case. Some of our guys transferred up because they we told they could see the field and being a contributor at a P5 means more NIL money than Ohio can give its best starters. But, while I would love to see him get to play, I suspect that this transfer didn't come with expectations of a lot of playing time and is about Cal wanting experience in their QB room and CJ wanting a prestigious name on his masters degree,

Yeah, they have a 6'5" 220 true freshman last season who played pretty well and hes coming back.

I think this was a smart academic move for someone who wanted to expand his circle a bit. He has said before he wants to be an AD in the future. Those jobs need to make as many contacts as possible.

Even if he never sees the field and only gets a scholarship instead of NIL money this is a good move. A grad degree from there opens all kinds of doors for him. This is a great move.

Cromer's replacement in a few years? I'd be for that.

She speaks VERY highly of him.

He's back.

Ohio EDGE Bradley Weaver has withdrawn his name from the transfer portal,
@On3sportshas learned.

Weaver had 34 tackles, 13 TFLs, and 6 sacks this past season.

I met CJ at a caravan last year. He connected with me via LinkedIn the next day. He's very impressive.

Another portal addition

Cam Rice - DL - 6'3, 260 - West Liberty University

He was a D2 All-American. In two years at West Liberty he had 89 total tackles, 37 TFL, 14.5 sacks, 2 INTs, 6 FFs. Pretty impressive even at the D2 level.

Love these under-the-radar D2 beasts. P5 was probably scared by him being 260 - at the MAC level that's size and strength.

Should get immediate playing time.

Is he a tackle or an end? 260 is plenty big for DE at any level of college football and tweener for a tackle in the FCS and above.

The two transfers before him were from Illinois and Northwestern respectfully.

Then we had Hunter from Purdue as someone mentioned looked like Tarzan and played like Jane.

And we had the Holy Cross DB who played great last year.

Lots of movement up and down the food chain this portal season. Notice Rice is a rising redshirt junior which puts him as HS class of 2021. Lots of those were misrecruited due to COVID. Some teams played a handful of games. Some had their seasons cancelled.

Somewhat cryptic “Brick by brick” tweet from Nevada portal OLB Marcel Walker-Burgess, who led the Wolfpack last year in sacks and TFL. It was liked mostly by our staff. Maybe a DE in our system? Looks like he will have one year left but these days who knows.

Last season we had two DL from Purdue and one from Michigan State. Combined, I had more QB rushes.

Who was all over the field....
Rayan Buell... Northwest Mississippi Community College.
Rodney Matthews... Hutchinson Community College.

Yup. This is what we've become. A team that finds talent where others may not see it.

Wonder if a young man like this would come to Ohio for a grad scholarship to our Sports Ad program?

How about this dude's stab and long arm work? Can you say Jack Linebacker? Hauser and Finney liked and plenty of coaches follow him.

Having Mathews and Buell signing with pro teams has to be ammo for OUr recruiters.

You may be small college/JUCO/D2 we can let you show your stuff and be noticed.

It looks like the D-line depth is improving….sounds like we’re in on the Nevada pass rusher.

Let’s bring in a few more.

GO CATS

Carson May, 6-5, 210, QB, from Wyoming is being wooed by the Cats. Like Gunnar Gundy, put up ridiculous numbers in Oklahoma High School ball. Hasn’t played yet in colllege (Iowa and Wyoming) and would have three years of eligibility.

Nice to see Ricky Hunt lobbying for him to be a Bobcat.

Also played JUCO.

He must be chasing playing time and not finding it.

Parker is a SR, so maybe he's willing to sit a year.

Kinda true. He went to a JUCO for spring semester his freshman year, but wasn't on that team for a regular season.

QB2 is not the most attractive role—particularly on a team that has the quarterback running so much. Rarely has a Cat QB started stayed healthy all year long. JD Sprague had 328 pass attempts from his Freshman to Junior years, basically as a backup. He would've been THE starter as a senior if he hadn't had a career-ending injury. Who was the starting QB during the Theo Scott/Boo Era? The guy who didn't have the season ending injury. I have a feeling that they can land a well-regarded quarterback like May as a backup who can see the longer-term opportunity.

My sources tell me three more transfers are coming in, with several more to follow. The three coming in are all on defense in: a DL from Nevada, a LB from UAB, and a DB from Wisconsin. All three of these guys are transfers who were previous transfers from other schools prior to the ones they are leaving. The DL from Nevada was previously at Southern Connecticut, the LB from UAB was previously at Coffeyville JC and the DB from Wisconsin was previously at Air Force. In addition, a transfer QB will be coming in, as well as 1-2 WR’s and 1-2 OL. I’ve lost track of the numbers, but when all these guys get here I believe nearly half of Ohio’s entire roster will be made of transfers from other schools. That blows my mind.
