Have you actually looked that monstrosity? It's probably one of the ugliest buildings I've ever seen. And, it doesn't exactly fit into the general architectural theme of Athens.

I can honestly say that I have never outright dismissed considering a hotel because it lacked architectural relevance to a location....especially in a location that is not historical itself. Might I consider an historic building when choosing where to stay? Of course. But in this case we are comparing it to Super 8, Hampton Inn, etc.

In my opinion, the typical Motel 6 has better architecture than that structure. But, I know that's a matter of personal taste and there are probably those who think this place should win a design award. To me it looks like something you might expect to see in Bowling Green.

Or, maybe Akron?

But, to be fair, it really fits BG best. In my book, BG gets the Buckeye State's Worst Architecture Award, hands down.

It would be really cool to stay in downtown Athens if it were like my days on campus. Belks, Martings, two theaters, many restaurants and boutique stores are not there any longer. Now you take a stroll and you can buy a tshirt and a sixpack.

I take it you didn't pick up anything on Amazon Prime Day. You might not even know what that is.

What does Amazon have to do with this discussion?

Back when you were here and when I first got here, uptown Athens was where people came to shop. Two things have changed. The retail center moved to East State Street including Walmart, then Lowes and now Menards and the year-round population of Athens has decreased in number. The example I often cite is the size of the local high school graduating class. In 25 years it has decreased from reroughly 230 to 180. In other words, there were people and a reason to go uptown. And of course, today there is Amazon and a million other online retailers.

When I travel and stay in any downtown area it’s because I want to experience the local dining and shopping. Uptown Athens had that back in the day. Maybe this hotel will bring some of that back. I certainly don’t travel to order from Amazon in my hotel room.

Whoever redevelops that property can dramatically improve its appearance simply by painting the brick.

Painting the brick. Ugh. Echoes of the white Cutler Hall.

That was even before my time, but I've seen photos. When did they sandblast that off? I think it may have been in the early part of the Baker administration when they did a major renovation of Cutler Hall.

BTW, since the thread was removed... kudos to this state on rejecting the BS fearmongering and desperate yard-sign-stealing tactics of the issue one supporters and dealing them a solid loss by well over 400,000 votes. Columbus and Athens had the biggest margins by percentage supporting "NO" on one iirc.

There have been plenty of civil political discussion on this board over the years. Without that discussion, this country will continue to tear itself from within. Why stifle attempts for folks to understand one another.

Yes, and he's been pretty lenient in that regard. but the non-stop pissing contest and name calling in the subject thread made it something that should be deleted.

The thread must have gone south quickly because I didn't see any of that the last time I looked. Anyway, it's gone and Ohio will now enter a period of non-stop craziness leading up to the November election. Glad I cut the cable and don't watch the news. Don't think I could handle 8 million mindless and often misleading campaign ads.
