Recently I was at a women's game at a P5 school I care not to name. They had a NIL "Flash Give" and raised close to $30,000 at that game alone. Do we really want to compete in this semi-pro environment? This is really not college athletics. It's pro ball with players going to the highest bidder.

Yet there were 2023 NCAA tournament teams named:

Vermont
Kennesaw State
Montana St.
UNC_Asheville
Cal Santa Barbara
Charleston
FAU
NKU
Iona
Kent
Howard
Drake
Fairleigh Dickinson
SEMO
Colgate
Furman
Corpus Christi
Texas Southern
Oral Roberts

Of course there were the usual suspects - Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, etc.

But plenty of "not wealthy" schools made the dance. And Ohio can too. Good recruiting (unlike last year's swing & miss on tall guys) plus good crowds returning to the Convo to re-establish a home court advantage, you never know.

As long as the dance keeps its bid format, someone from every conference will have a seat. NIL and the transfer portal aren't taking that away. What it is taking away is the investment in getting excited about having good players and having a core group grow into something special in the years to come. I think the sport loses something when it's so easy for Mark Sears to leave. Or in this landscape, would a Mike Laster still tough out the end of the rotation and work to start by his senior year. Would he be given the chance to?

A decade ago, it looked clear that Ohio, Toledo, Akron, and Buffalo were making
significantly more financial commitment towards men's basketball than anyone else in the MAC. Is that still the case when you factor in NIL? I honestly don't know aside from Buffalo struck out on so many coaching candidates largely because they didn't have any NIL infrastructure in place.

I think the days of AJ Clayton are behind us. (Even he I believe will be wearing a different jersey by 2025)

The first thing I thought of after Hadaway's double-double was UGA is awful, and they have no size.

He's from Lafayette, GA. 100 miles outside Atlanta. Georgia Tech is 14th in the ACC. They have 12 wins. They could use a nice young PF to come in and run a bit.

He's from 3 hours outside of Tuscaloosa, who's to say Oats isn't about to poach another one of our guys? He's from 129 miles outside of Knoxville. They've had a ton of success this season with transfers.

It's one of the reasons I've been so critical for "striking out" on DJ Burns and Ziggy Reid. I don't think we have the luxury of redshirting players anymore. We have to have a better mix, we have to bring in the talent, period. We dont have the luxury of bringing in a kid who is maybe a year behind and hoping in 2-3 years he'll be good enough to play MAC basketball. We have to take a "chance" on some 5th year guys and hope your staff is strong enough to maintain a culture.

I wonder if portal season will swing back the other way in the coming years. Like, if you're an average 6'4'' shooting guard, you and others like you might as well grow on trees. Testing the transfer portal might come with great risk of not being picked up by anyone because the market is so saturated.

Or, how much fun do you think Peyton Sparks is having at IU? Money talks, but is it worth being at the end of the rotation on a sinking ship? Are you setting yourself up for the long term pro career averaging eight minutes a game?

Eventually, I think it will for sure.

I think we're even seeing it with Reggie Bass.

Maybe he is personally happier being in Kent, Ohio - but from a basketball standpoint, the grass is dead.

With basketball, I think the best team to be on is the one where you're playing. You don't need to sit at the end of the bench for playing 4 minutes a game for Arizona. You can go to Santa Clara and make yourself an NBA draft pick. (Adama Bal)

Don't have to look too far up the road with Tanner Holden, or even Ali Ali. It's already been statistically proven (there's an article) that more "grass isn't greener" scenarios exist via the portal than not.

Guys are getting their money, but becoming less relevant. I don't think we'll see a lot (if any) of our guys jump ship over the years, contrary to the narrative.

My gripe all along has been our focus. It's one thing to be "in on" a few guys, but if we're more in on the wrong guys...

I think it's a positive just from the fact we're now exploring the JUCO levels for talent. Every stone at every level should be turned over.

I agree with this. Call me naive, but I hope Clayton, Hadaway, Sheldon, Elmore, Reef and AJ Brown are smart enough to see the pieces coming back that we can contend very strongly next season. Of course, this all depends on what Boals can add to this pot as well.

I just don't see AJ leaving off the injury. I think he needs one full year under his belt with no injury issues before heading down to Gainesville to join his little brother.

I think we see another year of great retention. I expect to see a great returning nucleus of Clayton with the 4 class of 2026 (AJB, EJ4, Hadaway, Sheldon). Not only because I think Boals has built a good culture, but also because the group is right in that sweet spot of seeing solid 30+ min opportunity here with good potential for team success...but also none are super studs head and shoulders above the MAC like we saw with Sears & BVP.

Would be nice to get some clarity on Reef's intentions. I guess we will find out Friday on Senior night.

What you speak is actual logic. Young adults with no worldly experience and the wrong people around them do not understand logic. They believe they are the next successful whatever and they have been told that in the club/AAU circuit. That’s the sad part, it’s one reason the NCAA and pro sports regulated who can be an agent. Now, thanks to courts and state legislatures, it’s slime ball fest time!!!

We’ve reached out to Fairleigh-Dickinson Grad transfer Sean Moore.

https://x.com/theportalreport/status/1766143839897792536?...

Only 6’5 but averaged 12ppg and 8rpg. He’s from Columbus. Not sure I’d prioritize him (unless another schollie is opening), given the need for more size and a PG but would still be a nice add.

Moore played a big role in FDU's monumental upset (15 seed over 2 seed) of Purdue last year, playing in front of his hometown crowd at Nationwide Arena.

You don't think Mizzou is going back up a Brinks truck of cash to his door?

They are winless in the SEC and desperate. And that's where he is from.

Visiting UNCW this weekend. His list of interested schools has extended quite a bit to Louisville and Charleston.

I just don't see how the current level of NIL world is sustainable. Donors are already feeling the fatigue of this thing and we're barely 2 years into it.

"You mean I have to keep donating to this just because some backup PG might transfer unless he receives XXX amount of dollars? My pockets aren't that deep."

Which is exactly why this thing has gone off the rails before it even got started. what's happening has nothing to do with "name image likeness" opportunities for the kids (which I'm fine with) and everything to do with which athletic department can facilitate the biggest handouts to the players.

I still think kids will come to value where they might get playing time. Chasing $ to sit on the bench with the rest of the scout teams will lose its appeal quickly.

Yup. It went off the rails when there was no regulation into the involvement of the schools to facilitate their proceeds. We were all duped into the "well yeah if some local company wants to pay him for an endorsement that shouldn't be a problem" line of thinking.

Saban's comments were very telling. There is about to be a severe shortage of willing and able college coaches.

Nick Saban owns several $10m+ homes. I get the point, but also, college football coaches should never say a word to anybody about being in it for the money.

I think he's exhausted with kids who haven't proven anything asking for large sums of money.

At least Saban has decades of elite coaching experience.

Kids these days are asking for six-figures and a starting position or they leave. No one is trying to prove it on the field anymore.

It's one of the reasons I softened with Sears. He dominated the MAC. Alabama gives him a duffle bag of cash. So he went home. We can't compete with that. You can talk about how he left all day, but at least he proved his ability before telling Oates his mom needs a house boat.

They've proven that they're good enough football players to be of interest to one of the most valuable football programs in the country.

That's not nothing, and I feel like there's an awful lot of righteousness about this money and who deserves it.

I don't know about that part. There are hundreds to thousands of lower level coaches who will do just about anything to get a shot. You don't think that GA who's sleeping on someone's couch and eating Top Ramen will throw his name in the hat?

Sure but I didn't say the spots will go unfilled, obviously that isn't the case. But the best will jump at pro opportunities or retire earlier in a way that we hadn't seen before in which case the quality will decline.

Carter Whitt is back in the portal. He visited two years ago. I recall him being more of a facilitating type, would compliment our roster well if Boals decides to reach out again.
