It would be both crazy and very possible to see NIU climb all the way to the 2 seed. Akron doesn't have the easiest road left. @Buffalo, home against us and Kent. Most likely they will not lose all of those games, but it's possible. NIU is a game behind them and has a remaining schedule of @Western, Toledo and Balls at home. I definitely could see NIU going 3-0 in that span.

Eastern came back from 10 down with about 4 minutes to go to beat Central 67-7-63. Good for us! Are the stars aligning for a home game? :)

67-63. No third team involved. :)

Toledo won, so we're tied with them at 7-9. Toledo has the tiebreaker for 7th seed. We're at #8. EMU and CMU are both 6-10.

We get a home game in the first round of the tourney if we win one of our last two or if EMU, CMU, WMU and Fiami each lose one of their remaining games.

It's been a big weekend for lower seeds beating higher seeds. #12 Fiami beat #1 BG. #7 Toledo beat # 5 BSU. #8 Ohio beat #6 Kent. #10 EMU beat #9 CMU. And #11 WMU leads #3 NIU by 18 with under nine minutes to go. The only higher seed to win so far is #2 Akron over #4 Buffalo.

Didn't get the help we probably expected from Ball State and NIU. If I'm reading this right though, one more loss from Miami or Western would clinch a road game for those teams.

One more win and we're at home on the 9th. Can't make it to Cleveland that Thursday. For us cable cutters, who will be carrying the quarter finals?

Looks like all four quarterfinal games will be aired on ESPN+.

Our team has been fun to watch during the second half of the MAC season. Here's to a nice tournament run.

I've got a really dumb question. Why does Buffalo have the tie-breaker currently over Ball State?

Somebody tell me what I'm missing.

From the MAC page on tie-breakers here - https://getsomemaction.com/sports/2015/3/4/MBB_0304150307...

1) They're both 9-7
Tie-breaker
A) Their head-to-head is 1-1
B) Division Records: Buffalo is 4-4 vs the East, Ball St is 5-3 vs the West

Sooo shouldn't it be Balls in the #4 spot?

This actually becomes really important because it currently plays a role in who the #1 seed is between Akron and BG. Their tie-breaker is nuts.

1) They're both 12-4
Tie-breaker
A) Their head-to-head is 1-1
B) Division Records: Both are 5-3 vs the East
C) Winning pct vs MAC teams from top to bottom
1) NIU - They're both 1-0
2) Depends...is this Buffalo or Ball State next?

Amazing how mediocre the MAC is this year. None of the top teams look like anything special. The parity of the league is scary. The tournament should be wide open. Ohio has competed better in recent games to climb into contention for a first round home game. Bobcats got healthy and the young players getting better. 7-9 in conference with two road games left. Not a bad first year from Boals. This year is a success already with the development of the sophomore and freshmen players. This year could have been real ugly, but this team overcame injuries, youth and battled back into the middle of the pack of the MAC late in the season. The close losses vs BGSU, Akron, @Buffalo showed this team can compete. The turnovers have come down and the free throw shooting improving. This team is well coached and things are better now than they were a year ago.

Agree oubobcatjohn. This is the most I’ve followed since DJ’s senior year. Hence, why I’m finally posting. I think Boals has us on the right track, go Bobcats 🙏. I’ve enjoyed watching this year.

The Bobcats have been playing well down the stretch run, now need to find a way to get a road win. Winning at Akron will be tough, but Ohio can beat Miami on the road. Win the home first round game and anything can happen in Cleveland. Exactly why winning the regular season doesn't do much for a MAC school. BG or Akron could end up winning the regular season title and sitting at home come NCAA tourney time. Any of about 8 teams can win the tourney.

This is a very good question.

Does the MAC still recognize divisions?

Miami did not look like the same team the Bobcats manhandled in the Convo when they beat BG yesterday. Amazing turn-around on their home court. Miami had their biggest crowd in recent years as Miami celebrated the coaching career of Darrel Hedric. Ron Harper, & Wayne Embry led a large turnout of former Miami players on hand to celebrate with Coach Hedric.
The Bobcats will need to bring their "A" game next week to handle Miami and secure a home game in the first round.

UB SID confirms via twitter that division record is used only to name a division champion.

Which:
A) Means the MAC website has outdated info,
B) Divisions are not worth a bucket of warm spit.

Guessing Buffalo wins the tiebreaker over Ball St. based on splitting with top seed or second seed Akron as Ball St. lost to Akron.

Ahh, ok. Thanks for looking into this.

After further inspection, the MAC website has an asterisk next to tie-breaker B, and at the bottom of the page says this is only used to determine the division champion. So guess that means it DOESN'T count for any other seeding. Weird.

Of course, the next tie-breaker is based on winning pct vs. MAC opponents from top to bottom....but then we have some circular logic because to determine who is #4 between Buffalo and Ball St, we need to first look at their record vs. #1....but who is #1 is also a tie...and comes down to who is #4 between Buffalo and Balls.

Luckily for the MAC, it currently doesn't matter since Buffalo has a better record vs BOTH Akron and BG...so they are #4.

Buffalo is 1-1 vs. Akron and 0-1 vs. BG
Ball St is 0-1 vs. Akron and 0-2 vs. BG

And that means BG gets the #1 seed currently because they have a better record than Akron vs. #4 Buffalo.

Since 2000, by my calculations only nine times has the regular season winner won the MAC tourney also. In 2009 Akron won the tourney as a fifth seed and in 2010 Ohio was a nine seed. In 2011 Akron was the sixth seed and in 2017 Kent was a sixth seed when they won the tourney. It will be tough for a lower seed to win it all in Cleveland, but not impossible.

Many on here are real optimists. Why couldn't OHIO make it to the 4th seed?

Ball State would seem to have an easy road to get a win BUT it is possible for things to lead to several at 9-9 to finish behind BG, Akron, and NIU.

Kent can easily lose the next two to BG and Akron.

Buffalo loses to Miami and NIU

Toledo loses one

OHIO wins two and Ball gets the flu and loses both of their remaining.

Who is #4 if a tie with Buffalo, Ball and OHIO? Or throw in Toledo and make it a four way 9-9 for 4th or what if Kent also has 9-9 --who wins the slot?

Would like to see Ohio host a game next Monday, obviously. Unfortunately, students will be on spring break. Another downside to being on semesters.

As best as I can figure it, we are in pretty good shape to host even if we were to lose out. Assuming that Miami loses at Buffalo, they're out. That would leave Ohio, Toledo, EMU, CMU, and WMU battling for the last two first-round home games.

Considering that we're 3-0 against EMU and CMU, the only way that I can see us falling below the 8 seed would be if we lose out, and either EMU or CMU win out (putting them a game ahead of us at 8-10, versus 7-11).

Notably, I think we would prevail on tie-breakers in any scenario where we are tied with Toledo, EMU, and CMU in a four-way tie for two home games (since we're 3-1 against that group). Even if you were to drop CMU out of that, I still think we'd prevail in a three-way tie with Toledo and EMU, since we'd be 2-1.

Meanwhile, we would also finish 8th in a situation where Toledo and Ohio lose out, WMU wins out, and EMU splits (losing at WMU but winning at Toledo), with all four schools finishing 7-11. In that case, Toledo would be 7th (with a 3-2 record against the others and the tie-breaker over Ohio), Ohio would be 8th (3-2 record, losing tie-breaker to Toledo), EMU would be 9th, and WMU 10th.

So long story short, I may be missing some permutation where Ohio finishes in a tie at 7-11, but I think that we should clinch a home game -- even if we lose out -- so long as each of the following occur:

- Miami loses at Buffalo
- CMU loses at Ball State
- EMU loses at WMU or Toledo

If a 3-way tie between Ohio/Buffalo/Ball St:

Ohio is 1-2 against UB/Balls
Buffalo is 2-2 against Ball/OU
Ball St is 2-1 against OU/Buffalo

So in that case Ball St would get #4, Buffalo #5 and Ohio #6.

If it's a 4-way tie adding Toledo:

Ohio is 1-3 against UB/Balls/UT
Buffalo is 3-2 against Balls/OU/UT
Ball St is 3-2 against UB/OU/UT
Toledo is 2-2 against OU/UB/Balls

So in that case, Buffalo would get #4 (due to better record vs. Akron/BG), Ball St would get #5, Toledo would get #6 and Ohio would get #7.

That's why #6 is our best (and still unlikely) case. Let's just hope for #8.

I'm not comfortable relying on anyone's help to secure that home game. Let's just win and take matters into our own hands.

By your metrics the entire NCAA is "mediocre this year"

Certainly no space or time here to argue this but Kenpom has been talking about parity rather than mediocrity.
