While it was good to win it was better for TA.
A loss would have surely sealed his fate.

5...I don't know if it is the DBs that are bad or the scheme. We are consistently 10 yds off the ball and back peddling at the snap when 7 yd outs are thrown. Can we please bump somebody at the line and throw the timing off a bit? Also, did I miss something this week? Seems like a lot of new players on defense. most of the linemen and backers/safeties look small to me and I think there are numbers I haven't seen much? Is this to negate the speed of Irons running or maybe I am missing something (did not have a roster to look at)?

Coach Albin explained it after the game. We have several guys playing out of position, especially in the secondary. Their strategy was to never let a receiver get behind them (as happened against Fordham).

It seems like Ohio punting this year is almost useless and we might as well go for it until we are in FG range. No matter how far back out punt can push them it seems like OUr opponent is on the edge of FG range in 4 or 5 plays at very most. Then we play taking more risks and it is a matter of can Ohio get a sack, turnover, an offensive penalty, or hope that they miss a long FG or at least hopefully eventually hold them to a FG instead of a TD. I said to the group I was with near the the Akron game that since we aren't really playing defense the last two games until they get on OUr side of the field. We are almost playing prevent defense and trying to keep everything in front of use so they don't get a 50+ yard touchdown just on that play.

ESPN has a segment calling a vertical catch over a defender getting "Mossed". We need a new term because you verified my concern. We are so vulnerable to getting "Kokosioulised" that the defensive scheme is designed mostly to make sure that we don't.

Nobody expected a loss in this one. That is why with a win there are so few posts about the game. The concept that TA is on shaky ground is dead as he's getting the wins. The schedule says there are a probably a few more wins out there. That would be enough to argue improvement.

Thanks for the clarification. I still don’t understand when you have two safeties why you can’t bump and run a little bit. This is especially true when the quarterback is getting the ball out quickly and you have no pressure on him from the front four. That is how your opponent gets over 400 yards passing.

CAMPUS FLOW.....The only sign of improvement over last year would be to post a winning season. PERIOD!
There are 6 games left and TA would need to win 4 to post a winning season, don't bet you house on that happening.

Wow, so if he DOUBLES the win total to 6, there's no sign of improvement? Glad I don't work for you.

Well, first off, it's widely accepted we are lacking in athletes at the back end of the defense. And it takes athletes to bump and run. Probably the hardest defensive technique to play in the secondary. So, sure, lets try that!!!

Ohio cannot win a game without having the MAC East Offensive Player of the Week. I would not be surprised if that trend continues for the entire season.

This week Sieh Bangura had 92 rushing yards and 3 TD on 16 attempts and caught a pass for a 25 yard TD. That apparently is better than Rourke's 427 yards and 3 TD on only 27 pass attempts plus 40 rushing yards. I would have voted for Rourke.

The 110's show had selections from a 1971 show. Wonder if that was related to the Bill Hess celebration?

According to the announcer, the show was a salute to Gene Thrailkill.

He said his wife and other family members were there.

Billy, I am talking about corners bumping and the two deep safeties covering for any deep balls. My point was they never challenged us deep because Irons couldn’t throw deep or they just took what we gave them all day.

In Nowinsky's presentation on his defense, his core belief was in a single safety, rather than having a safety over each corner.

I think Akron played this game way too conservative with way too many runs up the middle when the passes were working so well. And when you’re behind three scores, why take 6:24 off the clock. I’m glad they did what they did, but I’m not understanding it.

Same songs I remember. I have a 1971 110 album that has those songs on it. And there is a YouTube of a 1971 halftime performance with those songs. And I missed the reference to Thrailkill Saturday, although a friend told me that was his understanding.

You can hear the Gene Thrailkill announcement on one of the you-tube videos.

The announcer says he was known as "coach".

"Coach' was the formation the 110 did at the beginning of the show.

I still remember spending afternoons watching the 110 practice on the football field behind Mc Cracken Hall.

You don't just jump into that defense and say go get them. You have to have talent to run a trail man required in 2-Man coverage. And without the right personnel you can be just as bad in that defense as you are in any other defense.

I have been wondering if we played off so much was due to personnel. Teams will just go down the filed on us 7-10 yards a play at times.

Maybe someone who was lucky enough to be there can post if there was mention of Bill Hess .

Boil the game down to whose Red Zone offense is most efficient, is this the OU strategy? Eliminate easy scores, give up lots of yardage hoping for a mistake or two a game, rely on your place kicker and outscore the opponent by scoring in to the 40's. After getting lit up by Fordham on numerous huge plays (average TD pass 45 yards that game); well if Rope-A-Dope worked for the Great One than it is far better than the Fordham game strategy! I hear Ringo singing "Back Off Boogaloo" as training the corners each practice.

Guess that only works if opponent's D is not dominant or dominant enough like Kent to keep the OHIO score out of the 40's.

Enough of the season is behind us now that we can see that the score in the Fordham game was not just an Ohio defensive problem. Fordham has an outstanding passing offense for the FCS. They have averaged 442 passing yards per game, far, far ahead of the second best in FCS, UIW, with 385. They are also #1 in the FCS in scoring, averaging an amazing 49.8 points a game.

Yes, they had slightly a slightly above average game against Ohio, with 503 yards and 52 points, but Ohio is their only loss so far, and they had to go all out for yards and points from start to finish. The good news is that this means that Ohio's defense against Fordham was about equal to an average FCS defense. That's not good, but I do think that they are improving as the season goes on. We will see this week how the defense fares against WMU's struggling offense.

Yes, at one point they had Bill's daughter and son out on the field with some players from his era and the Voice of the Bobcat's (aka PA guy, aka oldkatz) gave them nice recognition. Both of his progeny seemed very pleased with the recognition. I spoke with them briefly when they returned to their seats.
