Haven't heard anyone even mention that they shouldn't be.

But so are people who drank Bud Light and owned their stock.

Yet, they are ones who you call "phobic" or "afraid" for exercising
their rights.

Yep, I interpret people who organize boycotts of a brand because the brand partnered with a trans woman as phobic and afraid. Maybe I'm wrong. How would you interpret that behavior?

You say they're exercising their rights. Unquestionably true. What point are they making in exercising their rights in this case? To me it seems quite clear that they do not think brands should make trans people visible. Trans people are "free to live their life however they want" but that some people get quite angry if they have to see it.

And the thing is -- none of those people would ever suggest Americans like Dylan Mulvaney don't have the right to live their lives how they want. So what are they so angry about? Where's the anger come from? Given what I saw on social media, hard to interpret it as anything but fear driven by phobia.

But you tell me what you're seeing. I'm curious.

You're entitled to your opinion.

Obviously, the people who stopped buying Bud Light and dumped their stock
have a different opinion.

Companies are free to use whoever they want as a spokesperson.

Bud decided to use Dylan Mulvaney.

Customers and stock holders didn't agree with their decision.

Simple as that.

I don't go on social media, so I can't speak to what people are saying about this.
Don't really care.
Each individual is entitled to their own feelings.

I never drank Bud light, so I don't "have any skin in the game".

What will be interesting is whether Bud Light decides to cut their losses and
move in, or try and ride out the storm.

Now, with all that cleared up... does anybody think Athens is NOT a good place to retire? Lots of beautiful outdoor recreation to stay in shape. I hear the farmers market is a good place for produce to get into more healthy eating. Easy drive to Peden and the Convo to enjoy live sports. Anybody disagree with that? Wasn't this thread supposed to be about retiring? Yellow Spring might have been interesting but it certainly doesn't have what Athens offers.

I love Athens.

But the Summer heat and humidity can be brutal.

I used to dread preseason soccer camp.

Also, the "grey flannel skies" all Fall/Winter could get depressing.

I wouldn't mind having a Vacation Home there.

Don't know if I'd want to live there full time.

Heat and humidity? Ever been in Nashville in July or August? Birmingham? Fort Worth, Texas?

Those place are like a sauna in the deepest pit of hell.

Athens will never be that horrible.

Yeah, you don't have an opinion or care. Holds up and nobody thinks you're just avoiding a question you realize you can't answer well.

Never been in Nashville, Birmingham or Fort Worth in the summer.

Have been in Richmond, Atlanta and Boca.

I agree, Athens will never be as horrible as those places,
but its still not pleasant.

I hate heat and humidity so if I relocate it would be to
New England.

Phobic afraid, and full of hate.

All of this happening in America over a completely manufactured issue. We should be getting so much shame.

Not to diminish this discussion about voter suppression, but perhaps a more troubling ongoing development in the Ohio statehouse is the hypocritical GOP leaders trying to put on the ballot this August an amendment to the Ohio constitution that would require future amendments receive 60% of the votes to pass. It has been 50% plus 1 for over 100 years.

Where's the hypocrisy?

1. Less than 6 months ago, these same GOP lawmakers decided Ohio should do away with August special elections because they are too expensive with turnouts too low.

2. They state the reason for this change is so out-of-state donors are not behind changes to our constitution when the real reason is because they fear a pro-life amendment will receive over 50% of the votes in November.

3. A newly formed PAC, Save Our Constitution, has received over $1 million dollars from its sole benefactor, an Illinois GOP megadonor. Yes, an out-of-state donor.

Two former Ohio governors, both Republicans, have spoken out against this special election.

New bill in Ohio introduced that requires state universities to "affirm and guarantee that they will not endorse, comment, or take action, as an institution, on the public policy controversies of the day, or any other ideology, principle, concept, or formulation that requires commitment to any controversial belief or policy. . ."

"Controversial belief or policy" is defined as any belief or policy "that is subject of political controversy, including such issues as climate change, electoral politics, foreign policy, diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, immigration policy, marriage, or abortion."

Excited to learn how this is about free speech, the free flow of ideas, and read quotes from Oliver Wendell Holmes. This allows the mere concept of "controversy" -- something that can be drummed about about literally anything, to be grounds enough to keep Universities silent. It will inevitably creep into curriculums, campus programming, and more.

If a bill passes with that wording, it will be declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, if it gets that far.

Restricting (suppressing) the right to vote in Ohio and limiting (mandating) what is taught in college in the name of free speech are just two examples how Ohio's GOP-run legislation is sending Ohio back 100 years.

But more unacceptable to all of that is a just-passed bill that requires a special election in August. The GOP, knowing that when voters in other states passed pro-abortion amendments (including red states like Kansas), they did so with less than 60% yes votes (but more than the required 50%). Therefore, Ohio voters will go to the polls in August, when typically only 20% or less of registered voters bother to go to the polls, to decide whether future amendments to the Ohio constitution must garner 60% or more of the votes. Of course the GOP is rushing this to the polls this August because they know Ohio voters will likely vote to protect abortion rights in the November elections.

In other words, our GOP leaders in Columbus have no qualms in stripping power from Ohio citizens, the ones they supposedly represent.

Is there anyone on here (OCF?) who can defend this power grab?

State Issue One is the most significant vote to come before Ohio voters in the 50 years that I've been eligible to vote. Anyone who thinks that 40.1% of the voters should be able to determine policy is either a couple cards short of a full deck or incapable of reason. Had this been in effect in the early 2000s you would still be able to walk into a Bob Evans and sit down and fire up an non-filter Camel. Think about that for a moment.

There is, in fact, an entire party in US politics whose entire strategy boils down to enacting minority rule. They're the ones talking about American Values, Patriotism and waving flags.

Can anybody explain how this isn't blatantly illegal?

https://twitter.com/ashtonpittman/status/1660697329777664...

I know Conservatives here don't like it when their policies are described as bigoted and hateful, but having a lot of trouble understanding what's underlying this new anti-trans push otherwise.

Anybody paying attention knew exactly this sort of thing was coming. Legislating away uncomfortable ideas, brought to you by the party who insists they're in favor of free speech.

Intellectual bankruptcy.

Cleveland, OHIO--on Beautiful Lake Erie, that's where to retire. Thanks to a guy like Dennis Kucinich making Cleveburg relevant again in the nation's political theatre. You know the guy, he is campaign manager for RFK, Jr? Why has none on here especially the 60's hippie crowd that historically wants NO WARS, not started a RFK,Jr thread? Cleveland, Ohio is the locale of the brains behind the primary challenge effort.

Will someone start an RFK, Jr thread or do you all act like the media and try to hide the story, stymie debate and choose not to rally for primary debates?

God Save the Queen....
