Ohio U For The Visiting Fan

Hey I just completed my annual Cuse Road Trips Rated article for this year. It will be published soon at https://www.nunesmagician.com /.

I can't go into too much depth for each game but I try to go a bit deeper than the usual click bait. I rate the games with several factors:

Factors considered:
• Fun Stuff/Food in surrounding area
• Weather (will I freeze my ass off for the date scheduled?)
• Ease and cost of travel, lodging (varied choices and reasonable costs)
• Parking ease and tailgate atmosphere (game day cash lots that have tailgating)
• Desirability of rival (excitement of a win over them)
• "Winnability” of game (Chance of a win this season)
• Stadium amenities and atmosphere (On-campus is a huge plus)
• Uniqueness (That once in a generation trip location is a plus)

Ohio actually tied for first with Virginia Tech this year. FSU, Louisville and NCSt are the other road trips this year. All five were close in scoring.

My comments to be published:

1. Ohio, Saturday, September 4th, 7PM

What is annually heard around the 315 for opening weekend, “I’d go but for the State Fair and the last weekend of summer”? So this trip won’t be too popular. However you are missing out on a great road game. The game gets the highest marks for weather with it being a night game. If I had to guess I expect a small Cuse crowd of 500-750. This is actually the closest drivable trip for CNY’ers at 8.5 hours with limited stops. Athens, OH and Ohio U. are raved about for being a charming city and a beautiful campus. This game makes a great 3-4 day weekend getaway over Labor Day weekend. Downtown Athens is filled with many restaurants (something about 25K students) and most are reasonably priced. In town I hear Jackie O’s is the place to go. For our more energetic types this sounds fun. Ohio’s campus is actually in a hilly part of Ohio. Ohio U. is considered one of the prettiest settings in the USA. So if you want something different and unique try this game. Be aware that motels in Athens are pricey. You might have to look at nearby cities like Parkersburg, WV, Marietta, OH and Zanesville, OH. Travel by air is through Columbus and it about 75 mins away. Travel by car is another story. It allows you many different opportunities to take side trips. I’m considering a stop at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.

Peden Stadium is on campus and large for a MAC school. However, it suffers from a hideous expansion around the end zone which gives it a high school look. The students come out and support the team much better than some much larger programs. The marching band is large and one of the best in the country. I figure Cuse will be a slight underdog for the game and the Bobcat fans will love nothing better than to beat a P5 team. Parking will be easy with numerous cash lots for $5 and $10 around the campus. The students party err tailgate hard but my impression is tailgating among the adults is not on the level of the B1G and ACC.

Nice job. I think fans traveling to the game will find your overview accurate.

The first game of the year is usually the best student crowd as the freshman are excited to get their taste of college football. The fact that Syracuse is P5 will only help excitement from both students and alums/fans. Maybe everyone is extra hungry after missing last season? Hopefully the weather will cooperate and it’ll be a great crowd. (I’m assuming students will be back in town by this point? When is move-in weekend this year? Hopefully nothing silly because of COVID)

You mentioned the surrounding area being scenic... For a unique experience you could stay in a cabin or camp in the nearby Hocking Hills area. Very popular park and tourist area. If anyone is expecting “flat Ohio” they are in for a shock as this is Appalachia. One other random fun fact, Athens is known as being one of the most haunted college towns in America

I wouldn't count on getting a table at Jackie O's leading up to the game. It's the closest bar to the stadium and very popular even among the none sports fan crowd. They do have a separate Tap room north of campus. There's also Devil's Kettle and Little Fish breweries in Athens.

There are plenty of college dive bars along Court Street, the main uptown drag. Pick one. They are not an awful walk from the stadium.

I made hotel reservations about a month ago. Pretty much the only thing I could find in Athens was the Knights Inn motel. If you're making a whole weekend and can spare extra, there are plenty of cabins in the region. Otherwise, you're looking at Logan, Lancaster, or Chillicothe for hotels, which aren't exactly next door.

Our tailgate scene can't compete with most of the ACC, but with it being the home opener, P5 in the building, most people missing out on football last year, there will definitely be a vibe. I mean it has to be better than whatever's going on at Wake Forest that weekend.

For those who are into trains a trip up to Nelsonville is worthwhile. The Hocking Scenic Railway is a bit more scenic in October than over Labor Day but it's still a fun trip. https://www.hvsry.org /

A link to a band performance which for many is the highlight of the day, would be a good addition. After their probation and then losing last yea, the 110 is ready to go.

A couple other things for your readers. If you want a real taste of unique places in Athens you might also try Casa Nueva (Mexican restaurant that is now taking reservations), O'Betty's Red Hot (hot dogs and sausages), North End Kitchen and Bar (a new place right on Court Street), and Courtside Pizza and Broney's for two local sports bar scenes with lots of high quality tvs.

And as The Sporting News once observed, Peden is the Wrigley Field of college football - all red brick with white trim. But instead of being surrounded by metro Chicago, the views from Peden have you gazing at the Appalachian foothills.

While we're the only stadium to increase capacity in recent decades (or ball slight increase too?) and four stadiums have reduced capacity (ksu niu mu bgsu) while only Akron has a new facility with less capacity than before, that means we've gotten closer to the average but our 24k (the 27k listed some places we know is bs) still below average and in the bottom third. Definitely not my cup of tea but it’s mentioned seemingly everywhere and it fits with our Halloween celebration narrative. I do find the conspiracy about Athens being centered on some ley lines entertaining, probably because I’m a map nerd.

There are a number of books about "Haunted Athens".

The best,at least in my opinion, is "Guide to Ohio University Ghosts and Legends".

A close second is Ghosts and Legends of Athens,Ohio.

A lot of this goes back to Insane Asylum, and "The Stain".

Athens was also featured on an episode of Scariest Places On Earth.

If you enjoy history,without the ghosts,"Asylum On The Hill" is also a great read.

Whether you believe in this stuff or not,Athens is considered one of the most
haunted places in the U.S.

If you are counting just the seats there are 21,600 in the stadium. 14,000 in the main grandstands, 5,000 in the corners, 1,000 in the Tower Club and 1,600 in the Phillips Club. This and the fact the stadium infrastructure was created to support a 14,000 seat stadium its small by MAC standards.

As an engineer and a man of science, I thought you’d tell us about the chemistry behind “the stain.” I was told once about how the decomposing body produced that stain via the interactions of various body chemicals, but don’t really remember the details.

It is interesting that Athens never became “haunted” until a few hippies in the 1960s decided it was because of some weird arrangements of local cemeteries. This story appeared in some local rags, and then the myth building started. It soon blossomed into a cottage industry. At least the ghost legends in places like Gettysburg started much earlier, and hence are slightly more intriguing if just as devoid of reality. [Extra credit for sneaking in a Civil War reference.]

First off, wouldn't the aliens have to have been dropped off on Union St., not Court St., to appear to students exiting the Union?

Secondly, I bet our new friend from Syracuse never would have guessed that his thread about away fans visiting Ohio University for a football Saturday would devolve into a discussion on the legitimacy of Athens being haunted.

If it were me visiting, I would try to scope out an AirBnb outside of town. That way it will give you a nice scenic view and drive in towards the stadium on game day. There's nothing quite like coming down 50 from the East, 32 from the West, or 33 from the North and winding through the hills and then the campus appears like a mirage. Just Google some aerial views of the Ohio University campus and you'll get an idea of what I'm talking about.

As an alum, I always have to take a walk uptown to College Green and see the alumni gate, stopping at Bagel Street deli for a snack and eating on a park bench if I can. If Bagel Street is too packed, and it will get packed on a Saturday or Sunday, Big Mama's Burritos or Pita Pit will work too. At night, a stop at Tony's for a Hot Nuts shot (or three) is a must. And if you want to step away from the uptown scene, as others have mentioned there are breweries available, but Smiling Skull has that hole-in-the-wall or biker bar feel where a lot of the younger crowd may not congregate.
