Perhaps I overspoke, Alan. I know there are locals that go to the games that didn't go to the University, but they don't seem to post here. What is your perception on this question?

I think on a percentage basis, L.C., your statement is correct, but one of the good things during Frank's years is we have grown the non-alumni local fan base. I never used to hear locals who didn't have some connection to the university -- either as alums, as employees, or business people whose clientele was university-based -- talk much about OHIO football. Now, I hear folks around the county talk about OHIO football as though it was of some interest. Some of these are actually starting to attend games. It's been a slow gradual shift and it's not exactly a quantum leap, but it is something I've notice on a number of occasions in Frank's 12 non-MACC years.

I've actually wondered why this phenomenon has occurred (assuming my perceptions are correct). I think that home Pittsburgh win in Frank Year 1 really made some folks sit up and notice. It got things off to a good start. Then, I think Frank relates to the locals in a way some past coaches have not. He's the son of a coal miner, after all. He was born in western Pennsylvania, so he's a fellow hillbilly. And, Jim Schaus has marketed the family packs to lower-income folks. Probably some combination of the above and other yet to be identified factors.

There's a Waffle House knock-off in the south called the Huddle House, that would be the perfect sponsor for a bowl.

All of what you are saying. Coverage in the Messenger could be a factor. Quality of football that you can see in Peden Stadium with big hits and athletic catches. Looks like the NFL compared to the HS around the county.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round
2012 45-13 victory over ULM in the Independence Bowl
2015 34-3 drubbing of Miami @ Peden front of 25,086

I'll take that action any day of the week. Ohio wins this game outright.

So this information is confirming through stats that this will be a defensive game. Coming down to which Defense is the most dominant and which Offense can create enough drives and finish them.

Today's The Record has a preview of all bowls and whether they are worth watching.

Ours got mentioned, not for the game itself, but the fact that Frank is twice the age of Troy's coach.

Their prediction is that experience should prevail,so take the Cats and the points.

If thats the case then Frank Should have beaten WMU, as PJ is younger than Neal Brown even.

During my senior year at OU, my girlfriend - later to become my wife Lynne - was a southerner. The summer after graduating and before starting my Army service, I flew south to visit her and her family. From Georgia we journeyed west through Alabama and Mississippi and north to Memphis and then across the river and southwest to Pine Bluff, Arkansas where Lynne was born. Along the way I learned of a southern grocery chain - Piggly Wiggly. Now, wouldn't that make for a snicker-inducing name for a bowl?

Yes, that's true. They've also opened stores recently in several other northern states, including Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Illinois. Now, if they open a store in Gettysburg, Pa., you'll know we have a vast Confederate conspiracy on our hands! ;-)

Right you are - used to be a Big Bear but those went by the wayside when Penn Traffic went upside down (Athena Cinemas were a Big Bear at one time).

Going way back to LC's comment, the family pack ticket pricing was/is a very good move to get local folks to the game and those who like to move up to empty seats and not pay the premium seat price.

Back to the game talk, some stat rankings nationally:

TOTAL DEFENSE
Ohio - 32nd
Troy - 33rd

SACKS ALLOWED
Ohio - 23rd
Troy - 1st (only 7 sacks allowed all season)

SACKS BY
Ohio - 8th
Troy - 48th

RUSHING OFFENSE
Ohio - 66th
Troy - 64th

RUSHING DEFENSE
Ohio - 7th
Troy - 19th

PASSING OFFENSE
Ohio - 79th
Troy - 36th

PASS EFFICIENCY DEFENSE
Ohio - 90th
Troy - 19th

TURNOVER MARGIN
Ohio - 42nd
Troy - 19th

Troy is gonna look to exploit the Ohio secondary and Ohio is going to look to control clock. Troy feels like a MAC West team in their style of play. Not quite as efficient as WMU, but efficient enough to be dangerous.

Disagree. What this board needs is more discussion of Colin Kaepernick's boycott of Piggly Wiggly.

How many OHIO were at the MACC game, how many tickets did OHIO buy for the MACC game?

What's the number of tickets sold to OHIO so far for the bowl game? What's the expected number of OHIO fans who will attend live?

I realize that a lot of the responses will be in the form of estimates...thanks.

Thread hijack:

What would have been the score if OHIO would have faced Tulsa today?

Will the MAC be favored in any bowl game this season?

Appy State 3-0 vs the MAC in two seasons including 2-0 in bowls.

OHIO could bring honor to the MAC with an exciting victory vs the Trojans.

Go OHIO, beat TROY!

Here's a link to Bill Connelly's Statistical profile: http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2016/12/14/13957260/dollar-general-bowl-2016-ohio-troy-preview-prediction-stats

Wish I could show the whole thing but here are the five biggest advantages for both teams. Basically tells at what we know, Ohio's defense = good. Ohio's offense = bad.

Five biggest advantages* (according to the advanced stats)

* or smallest disadvantages

Ohio

  1. Rushing Explosiveness (IsoPPP) (No. 17 defense vs. No. 111 offense)
  2. Rushing S&P+ (No. 29 defense vs. No. 107 offense)
  3. Adj. Line Yards (No. 30 defense vs. No. 100 offense)
  4. Passing Downs Sack Rate (No. 27 offense vs. No. 93 defense)
  5. Passing Downs Efficiency (Success Rate) (No. 54 defense vs. No. 119 offense)

Troy

  1. Standard Downs Efficiency (Success Rate) (No. 22 defense vs. No. 120 offense)
  2. Redzone S&P+ (No. 32 defense vs. No. 127 offense)
  3. Rushing Efficiency (Success Rate) (No. 31 defense vs. No. 126 offense)
  4. Efficiency (Success Rate) (No. 30 defense vs. No. 124 offense)
  5. Passing Efficiency (Success Rate) (No. 24 defense vs. No. 113 offense)

That standard downs efficiency stat is huge. If Ohio gets behind the chains and is forced to play 3rd and mediums to 3rd and longs, it's not gonna turn out well.
