Ohio came into the season with a new defensive scheme, and a lot of optimism about how it was going to work out. It hasn't worked well so far. It is going to take a major step to fix the issues and rebuild the confidence. To play good defense, each player needs confidence in his teammates, confidence in himself, and confidence in the scheme, and then he needs to play aggressively. When doubt creeps in, the whole system breaks down. To have a good season, they need to fix this fast.

Ohio is giving up 44.8 points/game, with only 4 teams worse (BG, Hawaii, Charlotte, FIU). Ohio is giving up 360.8 yards passing/game, in last place by a good margin, with only a couple teams within 60 yards of them. For total defense, they are giving up 522.8 yards/game, with only Charlotte and FIU behind them.

We are 8 point underdogs and the O/U is 69.

I am thoroughly impressed with Kent's performance at Georgia. Their losses at Oklahoma & Washington weren't terrible either.

Growing up, I used to take batting practice left handed. I was far from a switch hitter and was terrible from the left side. I only did it because when I finally started swinging right handed, I felt so comfortable and superhuman. Kent's OOC schedule is the left handed batting practice, we are the right handed game action.

I hope I'm wrong but I think we get whacked. That is as much a statement in me buying Kent than selling Ohio.

Massive win if we get it done. Would really turn the whole outlook of the season to really feeling good about bowl eligibility ad even competing for the east. Looking forward to MACtion!

No doubt, but the staff needs to use what they have, because the immediate goal has to be to get the best possible results with the players they have, or there may be no second chance for this staff. After the results the first four games, they have their work cut out for them. I hope we will see continued improvement as the season progresses.

44.8 points allowed per game. That has me reflecting fondly on Grobe's final season at Ohio. The Bobcats were one of only four FBS teams to not allow more than 28 points in a single game in that 2000 season (which included a well-fought loss at Iowa State and wins over Minnesota and Marshall).

We are 2-2, which is better than 0-4.

Maybe the defense has different schemes going into MAC play.

My preference is low-scoring games. In 2000, Ohio was #21 in scoring defense, giving up 18.9 points a game. They also gave up only 349.3 yards per game. My favorite Bobcat team was 2006, which was #23 in total defense, giving up 18.1 points per game and 302.9 yards per game. 2009 wasn't bad, either, #28 in defense, giving up 21.3 points/game and 348.5 yards/game.

Since then, the averages have slowly risen, perhaps due to schemes, perhaps due to other changes in the game such as rule changes favoring offense, perhaps due to recruiting, and perhaps due to coaching changes. I'm not trying to blame any one thing, but just say that I prefer to watch a defensive battle than an offensive free for all.

That's a good stat, Mike. But my favorite stat from the Grobe Era was the year we lead the nation in the fewest passes attempted.

This would be a huge win. Kent State is no joke. It will be interesting to see how banged up Kent State is after playing Georgia.

We need to rely as much or more on our ground game against Kent to keep their offense off the field. Thankfully, we'll actually have a scholarship running back (Bangura) in uniform this week to handle the load along with two decent backups. Wish Ross were available too.

Thought I heard Russell say Ross would be back this week, also.

Maybe it is the personnel and the coaching and not the scheme?

We should be heavy underdogs and I would expect Kent State to easily reach 50 points. We are dead last in the nation against the pass. Any decent QB is going have his way against us.

I saw on ESPN that the consensus spread was Kent -11.  Does that seem right?  I thought it would be higher than that.  I'm not a gambler, so I don't exactly understand these things.  But, I was expecting more like Kent -20, or so.  I mean, Kent not only has an offense, but they have a defense.  The 17 point loss to Georgia last week was the smallest point spread for the Bulldogs in their four games so far this year.  I know that comparative scores and comparative point-spreads can be deceiving, but in this case it seems that Kent is being under-estimated by the bookies.

My guess is with the spread they are thinking MAC parity and not much gap between teams. I think oddsmakers gives us too much credit. Those of us that follow Ohio and the MAC know things are different now in the post Solich era. We don't run the ball like we used to. We used to be tail back U in the MAC. There isn't a MCCrae, Irons, Tuggle in that backfield anymore.

The defense has been an epic disaster.

I just didn't think our secondary could be that bad, like the worst in FBS bad. I am encouraged by Torrie Cox though, but knowing our luck he will probably transfer out after this year lol.

Kent has won 10 straight home games, Miami has won 15. Would like to break at least one of those streaks

We almost shocked Kent last year didn't we? I think it was 34-27? I believe we are a more talented team this year offensively (defensively I have no clue what's going on). I thought that with Keye back we'd be better but something is out of whack. No matter--we can do this. People dogging on us barely beating Fordham last week need to realize Sieh would have gone off and while we rushed well--he would have controlled the clock for us.

LOL I think we've been saying/waiting for this to happen for a while now. The fact that he has yet to start and is still not starting should make it rather clear.
