It isn't about the trophy, its about how a full season schedule covering less than 10% of the league in which you belong is silly, especially in a sport where roster depth is so important and the disparity as you move up and down the ladder is vast. Why not group things better competitively and geographically?

So, FBs football plays exactly 10% of the DI membership. DI basketball plays less, but to you that’s ok? Oh the irony here.

Please show me where I said it was OK in basketball.

Well, you never even floated the idea in basketball, only float it as football, so by defacto, you only state this is an issue with football. Really not that hard to understand.

I didn't start this topic of realignment, and to my knowledge there is no such similar discussion occurring on the basketball board...so no, you don't get to make that assumption.

But since you are hell bent on making the connection, fine. As I already pointed out, the deep rosters of football create very rapid & significant disparity among teams as you go down the chain of competitiveness. It isn't near as drastic in basketball. Not to mention the lower costs to operate, the ability to have a large tournament, and a schedule with 3 times as many games.

That said, I would certainly entertain the idea of splitting up divisions and creating more in basketball. Should I comment my feelings on all 24 NCAA sports divisional structure so you don't think I'm just picking on football?

Not to pick on football as well but reading the article on Kent State’s cuts in athletic department due to covid is striking.

In order for Kent State to “compete” in BigBoy football they have non-conference scheduled games against Bama, Kentucky AND Penn State. These aren’t games they scheduled to be able to compete in, they are games scheduled to generate dollars so they can compete in a division of football they have no earthly chance of EVER being able to compete in. That’s just the front part of their schedule. And who amongst would ever be against pitting our “student athletes” against a clearly far superior foe for the express purpose of not generating wins but money?

Bringing up the rear of the schedule brings one those TV megabucks from playing those mega tv blockbusterratings of the Tuesday/Wednesday cold blustery November Ohio evenings. Well I guess those games may now really be of value to the entire nation. It will provide the nation with a true blueprint of how football can proceed without fans in the stands! The MAC truly is the conference leader in social distancing! We’re #1.

Not trying to pick on our MAC associate KSU as you can insert any MAC team in my little rant. The shoe fits for us all. We were already in an arms race we had no chance of competing in when times were good. Might really be a good time for the D1 delusion to cease or at the very least a different approach be taken.

Kent has been playing a no-win OOC schedule for several years. Last year they had Arizona St, Auburn and Wisc. In 2018 it was Illinois, Penn St and Ole Miss. They cut themselves a break in 2017 with Clemson and L'ville along with T'erd. They played at least two money games a year for several years before that. I don't think they do it for the football team. If so, it's an out-and-out failure. I think they do it to pump money into their other sports to help make them more competitive.

Kent is very competitive in basketball, baseball and golf and other sports. They have been to the College World Series recently and the final 8 in hoops and the golf program is excellent. They won a bowl game in football last season. Don't kid yourselves as Kent has been way more successful in some of these sports than Ohio. If by chance they "play football games vs Auburn, Bama, Ky., Wisc, ASU, and Penn State to pump up" their athletic department then so be it. Good for them. I personally think that this type of schedule is not the recipe for success, but that may be the new normal for many football schools. Will the Bobcats continue to play Wilbenforce, Northwest Ohio, Heidleberg, Capital, Rio and some others in basketball to pump up their record or go on the road for money games at Duke, Kentucky, Louisville, Xavier, Maryland or many others? The need to play several of those schools may soon be necessary.

glad to see everyone here is realistic..... 100% serious comment.

generally i find tons of people seem to have no idea that all kinds of things will never be the same after this CV shutdown. that sounds incredibly dramatic but i think it's completely obvious

i heard an economist saying he doesn't think real gdp in the USA will get back to december 2019 levels until early-mid 2023.... this is way off topic, but a vaccine and then getting everyone vaccinated will take years.

Around here the only valid economist is Richard Vedder. We enjoy his work on this site.

We should have already been scheduling several P5 games in football and basketball. I've always wanted to elevate the schedules, but for other reasons. It seems that it would be a good financial move, as well. That, and paying coaches in the dean range.

Maybe the days of playing Howard, NC Central, RI and Gardner Webb are over in football? Taking on a type of schedule that Kent is facing this season at Penn St, at Ky. and at Bama is unthinkable, but they will get paid a pretty penny as long as Ohio's former AD didn't negotiate the contract. Cross off sure home wins in hoops as Rio, Heidelberg, Wilbenforce, Northwestern Ohio, Urbana, Capital and Marietta probably will be traded in for away money games at Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan and Xavier.

Our 21 and 22 non-conference schedules are very appealing.

I don't know about the future basketball schedule, but playing future football games with Syracuse and Iowa State home and home do nothing for the budget. Those games make sense, if Ohio gets paid to play them away, but not a home and home. Of course those games were negotiated by the former AD.

The 2022 non-league schedule is not an ideal schedule. The Bobcats will be fortunate to be favored in one of the four games they play. Only FAU is home and that is the opener. That game could be a toss up. At Penn State, at Iowa State and at Rutgers. Rutgers wasn't good last season, but will be in year three of a new coach. Ohio will not be favored in any of those contests and the ISU game is not a money game. Bad scheduling on the part of the former AD. Ask Coach Boals if he would like to play a non league schedule of 12 games with only three being home and they aren't games against Tenn. Tech, Detroit Mercy, Rio, Heidleberg or Wilbenforce? We all know what his response will be. The future may come down to Ohio playing more away "money" games in football and basketball. Playing at Kentucky, Xavier and Louisville in hoops will be the norm and no more games with Rio, Heidelberg and Wilbenforce. In the future, Ohio will look to get paid instead of dishing out money to these lower division schools.

We're at Rutgers in '23. '22 is @ISU, @Penn St, home vs FAU and Fordham.

If anyone was ever serious about elevating the program, it won't be from playing Wilberforce. The money angle is a cherry on top.

Article from Cleveland Scene (weekly) basically saying it's irresponsible of Akron to keep D1 football. The picture at the top of the article says it all, as does reading the amount of money spent on InfoCision:

Maybe this BobcatAttack.com website has the 2022 schedule incorrect? But this is what is on the football schedule for 2022. Hopefully Fordham is one of the opponents.

i think for football the ncaa maybe should institute a tier between divisions.

basically formalize the power 5 vs. others split.

schools like boise would move up to p12 or big12.........

Thanks NashvilleKat as that schedule is a little better. However the ISU game is not a money game, since they are returning the trip in 2023. Although with the current pandemic situation, I could see some of Ohio's future schedules getting changed.
