A teammate agreed to write something to aid the player's case for immediate eligibility and then failed to follow through, so an assistant coach faked it. At least there was some kind of real reason and the whole thing was not made up. I am curious, though, why the teammate didn't do what he said he would. That being said, Buffalo's penalty is basically a slap on the wrist. A $5,000 fine and a few days off from recruiting is nothing. The coach, however, gets essentially a three-year ban. Somewhat unrelated, but Kansas also self-reported minor violations within their football program which eventually got David Beatty fired so Jeff Long could hire his buddy Les Miles. Some believe this was all to distract the NCAA from the basketball program.
