Frank's answer starting at 1:33 tells a lot. He is not happy.

I look for the defense to start from the beginning of the game this week, and play NIU tough. Ohio matches up well with NIU, and they always play NIU tough. I look for an Ohio win this week.

31 missed tackles?!?! Ugh ... that is just gross.

Has to just eat at Frank. I knew it was a lot ... but 31 is mind-blowing. Not what you'd expect in week six of the season (game five)

Wonder how long they can keep their head above water in the MAC with this 4000lb anchor around their ankles. (That anchor is obviously the defense)

As Russ said during the postgame ... it's basically a survivor pool with Buffalo. You have to think UB might lose at Toledo, but maybe not any others.

So that means Ohio can only lose one game before going into that UB game if they want to win the East.

Seems like playing with fire with road games at very capable NIU, WMU & Miami on the horizon.

Given the offensive struggles of NIU's QB, (I just waived him from my college fantasy team), the defense needs to set the tone early. Don't let them score early. Regardless of who plays at QB, establish the ground game. Field position could be key so minimize any special teams mistakes.

Basically, what Uncle Wes said.

Ohio: 20
NIU: 17

Defense is starting to gel...slowly, but enough to get the job done. Back to back conference road wins.

So, in this thread we are, rightfully, giving so much respect to NIU's DE Sutton Smith. Now PFF lists Ohio's Evens and McKnight as this weeks All Conference Edge players. P. White is listed on the offensive side.

Just stop.

It also lists BG's Jarret Doege as the QB. Based on your correlations, are you willing to say Doege is better or in the same ballpark as Nathan Rourke?

So, perhaps #65 can not go. I would expect #63 to shift outside. Not sure who, #70, 73 or 76, would take over LG. Honestly #63 still remains the key. If Ohio can make this shuffle and still get the W over NIU #63 will deserve our appreciation, no matter the numbers the "skill" players run up.

So last week, I said the things we needed were: 1) Get the W (we did), 2) Continue defensive improvement (more work to do on tackling, but improved over the course of the game in terms of keeping Kent out of the end zone), and 3) No major injuries.

The injury to Lowery is very concerning. The O-line is the key to our offense, and he's the cornerstone. If Rourke can't go, it will certainly hurt us, but we can win with Maxwell (see Toledo game).

Same keys for this week, but I'd modify #3 to include a quick return to health for Rourke, Lowery, and Irons.

NIU 28
Ohio 13

The defense has shown some marginal improvement, but the injuries on offense are the problem. So, while the D has a (relatively) decent showing, the O can't get it going.

I hope I'm wrong.

Vegas is saying

Ohio 24
NIU 28

I think this is probably going to be pretty accurate. If Rourke isn't 100% and Lowery is still out and if Irons/Ross can't assist AJ in the backfield ... the offense WILL struggle. NIU has the best defense Ohio has seen this year.

And let's be honest ... does it really matter what kind of offense NIU has ... they will find success against Ohio defense. Everyone else has. They will pile up big yardage just like every other team has ... the biggest question is will Ohio hold them to FGs like they did against Kent or will they allow TDs. If it's the latter ... NIU will score 30 with zero problem.

I like Ohio's chances if offense is 100% healthy .... but that just doesn't seem to be the case.

I watched parts of NIU vs Eastern Michigan, vs Utah, and vs Ball State so I get the props about NIU's defense: they play as fast as just about any MAC defense as I can recall. Watching games this year, defensive speed stands out. Anyone who watched Ohio State vs TCU this year knows what I mean: talented defenses play fast. I agree with the posts that Ohio can win and that NIU's defense shrinks the room for error for Ohio to win unless NIU also has a bunch of errors. Ohio's offense will have to execute at a high level on big opportunities to score: opportunities will be there against the NIU defense just less frequently. Eastern Michigan had 3 or so plays with huge, game-changing potential but just did not execute thosse plays. The formations NIU runs defensively will provide 1 on 1 opportunities in the passing game in the middle of the field. Papi, Cam, Meyer and the boys can clean up there. And the way NIU blitzes its LBERS, QB draws/scrambles to the opposite side of the pressure will be available at least for a few plays.

Assuming Rourke, Irons, Lowery and Ross don't play (ugh), then it's really tough sledding for Ohio.

Maxwell will be the key to the game. IF he can get the passing game going, connect on some intermediate or even a couple of long passes to Papi White or Cameron Odom, and consequently prevent NIU from stacking the line of scrimmage, then Ohio has a chance. If the passing game's a dude and NIU puts 8 men in the box, AJ will have nowhere to run.

I think CMoney's score prediction is spot on, but I will go with:

NIU - 41
Ohio - 17

Ohio's injuries doom them in this game. But I will be more than happy to eat a little crow for dinner tomorrow night!

This game will come down to how well our defense plays. Will we tackle? Will we cover? Evan Crouch has been our only consistent defender, we need to have good performances from everyone this week Final prediction, Hagan keeps it going and gets a pick 6, Dylan Conner, runs through the ball and not just to the ball and Hudson and Brooks are decent in coverage. Cats win 31-17

Nobody despises to lose more than I do. That's got me into trouble over the years, but it also made a man of mediocre ability into a pretty good coach. Woody Hayes

Bobcats 3-2 1-0 in the MAC haven't played up to the preseason hype yet. This is one of one those games where they can right the ship and put us on track for a strong season that we hoped for. This team still has all its preseason goals in front of them MAC East Title and MAC Title and bowl trip. Almost at halfway point in season. The key games will be Buffalo, Akron and Miami. They win those three games they win the east. A win at NIU should help a lot toward securing a bowl bid.

Revised prediction given the injury list:

NIU - 35
Ohio - 31

This now should be a very close game. I’ll give the nod to the home team.
