There are currently 65 teams in "BCS conferences," 52 teams in "non-BCS conferences," and 3 independents. The Athlon Sports preseason 120 depicts a clearly divided FBS power structure:
- Of the top 50 positions, 45 are occupied by members of BCS conferences (plus independents Notre Dame and Navy) (non-BCS or independents are No. 4 Boise State, No. 11 TCU, No. 39 Utah, No. 42 Houston and No. 44 BYU)
- 65 of the top 80 positions are BCS conference or independent teams
- 37 of the bottom 40 positions are occupied by members of non-BCS conferences (exceptions are Army, Virginia and Washington State)
- Of OUr team, Athlon Sports notes, "Ohio’s not-so-illustrious history shows no MAC titles since 1968 and no bowl victories at all. But Frank Solich has led the Bobcats to the precipice of excellence after claiming two of the last four MAC East titles and delivering the program’s first two bowl appearances after a 39-year absence. With six senior starters on defense and five returning starters on offense (not counting Boo Jackson at quarterback, who was injured last season), this could be the year the Bobcats rewrite school history."
