Three year deal, minimum of 3 football games a year and 33 basketball games, plus coverage of some other championships, such as volleyball.

I was wondering when we would sign with STO. (you can ask anorris, this is something i have been calling for a while) they do very little from November- March, and the MAC had too many Ohio teams so it just makes sense for the league and STO.

Although, STO is Clevelend-centric......

they are owned by the Indians, (thus why the lack of programming from November- March) last year they did programs on Akron football, and Can't football, they have a weekly browns program, weekly Cavs show. Although they do a really good job with the high school state championships

Glad to hear that we might get more OHIO basketball games on TV rather than having to watch through the streaming app we had last year.  Though that was still better than having nothing.

Maybe this is a glimmer of hope from the MAC office. I'd given up on the annual speech that MAC programming has to be on that channel when baseball ends. Which for the Indians, is last month.

**EDIT

Allow me to add this, because I work in a climate right now where nobody cares that you did right by them for the last year, you screwed them today and they're pissed. And even then, when you take a look at just how and why you screwed them, you discover they really have no legitmate reason to be pissed.

This is FANTASTIC! The positive spin on ESPN "contracts" has been a joke, just like the coverage we've been able to extract from a network with five platforms and an internet presence. Nationwide basketball broadcasting is increasing by 60% on the strength of a single channel! "But it's not national!" you naysayers will counter. To hell with that thinking! If somebody wants to watch an STO game anywhere in the world, they have a way.

The MAC office has done something that no previous Cleveland-based commissioner/used car salesman was able to do.

Now... if Mike Reghi isn't a part of this... I'm gonna go to the MAC Tournament... I'm gonna sit in the last row of the stands.... and with 18:04 remaining in the first half, I'm gonna stage a walkout...

This is a good deal for the MAC. With FSN they had to fit us between the Big 12, Pac 10 and syndicated shows that were national as well as contracts with the Blue Jackets and Cavs. MAC should be able to get better time slots too.  The increase in hoops games should help.  STO has good talk shows like Bruce Drennen All Bets our off which covers the MAC and has had OU coaches on before as well as Phil Steele who is real good with his football magazine.  Cleveland State and the Horizon got games  on STO as well.  This is a real good fit esecially in hoops season.

I believe now six OU games (five of them away) are set to be on TV and perhaps another one could be added with this?

9/18 at Ohio State on the Big Ten Network
9/25 at Marshall on WSAZ
10/2 at Eastern Michigan on ESPN regional (including a channel in every part of Ohio)
11/4 vs. Buffalo on ESPNU
11/16 at Temple on ESPN2
11/26 at Kent State on ESPNU or ESPN360

I guess the last game might not be broadcast on TV and a lot of fans probably don't live in a region to see the Marshall game, but this is still good. Maybe the only non-televised away game (Miami) will be picked up by STO or maybe against BG or Akron since they are in-state teams.

STO and the MAC is a no brainer. I've been saying this since STO took to the air several years ago. STO needs programming, and the MAC should want exposure (although after decades of following the MAC, it would make you wonder), so it is oh so logical for them to get together.

I would think that during the Indians off-season, STO could almost be something like the MAC Channel, just like the big-time conferences are doing on their own. Again, STO need programming, so it couldn't be anything but a big plus for them to have significant coverage of the main D1 conference in their coverage area - unless the MAC is so lowly regarded in its own territory that there isn't enough advertising support for it to be profitable for STO to do so.

I say that the MAC Commissioner should do all he can to build a strong relationship with STO. Remember, STO is seen nationally, and recruits want to play for schools that can be seen on national TV. National exposure is a good thing for MAC schools.

Agreed with STO needing programming. I mean don't they cover the entire Soap Box Derby? Too bad game 1 couldn't be Sept. 11 Cats vs Rockets the Tribe has a 7:05 start that night. By then they should only be about 35 out of first. Would be nice to kick off their coverage with two teams with big alumni bases in their viewing audience and in prime time.

Not STO related, but you may be interested to know that ESPN has announced that the U will be producing all of their Thursday night and Saturday games in HD, so our game at home vs. Buffalo should be produced in HD.

STO seems to do a good job at broadcasting in HD. Hell, I believe that even PWO (Pro Wrestling Ohio) is broadcast in HD.

Rooting for Akron is like cheering on the Taliban.

They've also done OHSAA Basketball tournaments in HD the past few years.

Great news. STO is a national channel (DISH and Direct TV both offer it) so this should really help get the conference some great exposure that isn't possible with regional ESPN/Fox Sports broadcasts.

The Football Championships staged at Canton are usually in HD too (but not the Massillon ones).

The capability is there, we just have to hope they use it.

Not to worry about STO quality, my friends...word on the street is that they have lined up Sonny Randle for football color commentary...and they have brought on some folks from ONN to run the quality control stuff.

But, seriously...this is very good news.  I like STO and am hopeful that their presentation of MAC sports will be very good.

No, it is not broadcast in HD (at least I've never seen it broadcast in HD).

STO is a cable network that was started by the Indians management to televise their games when they got fed up with FS Ohio's overscheduling with the Reds, Blue Jackets, and Cavs (Think YES for the Yankees).  It was launched in '06 and is available on basic cable through all the major cable providers in Ohio (Time Warner, Cox, Charter, Insight, Wide Open West, Buckeye Cablesystems).  It is also available on sports packages on both Dish and DirecTV (431/5431 and 662, respectively).

They have been very proactive in HD programming, and produce all the Indians games, home and away, as well as most (if not all) their studio programming in HD, in addition to the aforementioned high school programming.

Also, when I was at a Logan playoff game this past Fall, I bumped into a couple guys I knew from WBNS/ONN who were doing the satellite uplink for STO's coverage of the game -- so perhaps coverage won't be as Cleveland-centric as some have expressed a fear of.

STO is on the "Expanded basic" for most of Ohio on TWC.  As long as you are paying for more than the very lowest level of cable (Channels 2-27), you'll get it... but you don't have to have a Digital Cable box either.

To put it another way, if you live in Ohio, have TWC, and get ESPN right now, you should get STO.

The only exception is Southwestern Ohio in some cases.  In the past for thew OHSAA Championships, TWC has opened up a feed so that they got to see the games.  Hopefully that would happen in this case.

Senior Fan is in Southwest Ohio, that's the reason for his questions I think. I live in SW Ohio but have DirecTV and get STO as part of the sports tier subscription. I wasn't sure how widespread STO was on the cable systems in the state or if it was offered in SW Ohio.
