Go to ohiobobcats.com and you will see not one  -- not one -- story about preseason camp. Perhaps our resident "insider" and equipment manager can give us some details.

Well, what do you want? A story telling you things you already know? Maybe you'll get something at the end of the day along the lines of "Report from Camp: Day1"

Camp is starting today so I think we'll start seeing stuff soon.

Well, let's see.  I did a quick review of a couple of other school's athletics sites to see what they've run (and what we've done in the past but apparently not this year). Here's a sampling of coverage:

Interviews with newcomers (players)
Interviews with new coaches
Overviews of camp schedules
Summaries of key position battles
Interviews with returning starters
Interview with former director of equipment*

Or, in our case, just run nothing for fans...

I'd wait until camp actually starts (today) to be hopeful in seeing things. Other schools started camp last week so that could be why you saw things on their websites. All in all our sports media department is one area where budget cuts have really affected them so unless your willing to pony up the money to support more staff I'd take it easy on the things that really aren't that big of a deal at the end of the day.

Russ and Rob did a live show from MAC Media Day at Detroit. They also posted a video report that's available on OhioBobcats.com. Evan shot video while Joonie Posey was doing his radio interview Friday. I'm not even sure newcomers were required to report until yesterday. There are, at times, legitimate complaints on this board. Other times, we just seem whiny. I am sure there will be news about Camp now that Camp has actually started.

There has not been a legitimate news release/story issued by media relations in 10 days. Not a great way to build excitement and encourage media coverage.  Sorry if that seems whiny -- it's just not good media relations work.
I assume we're still trying to sell tickets...or maybe we're sold out...

It seems legitimate to me to not have lots of camp recaps before camp has started.

Anyway, it usually takes me a few weeks to digest the media guide. That will keep me going for a couple more, maybe longer since I don't have a printed copy to carry around. Any news in the meantime is icing on the cake.

SBH, you made this post at 10:17am on the first day of camp.  The players didn't even report until yesterday.  The Athletic Department is dealing with another round of budget cuts, a large portion of which I heard came from media relations. AND even if they had footage or reports, they probably hadn't had a chance to make edits for the final version by your crazy 10:17am deadline.  I wouldn't call it whiny as much as I would call it outrageous expectations!  Looking at other MAC schools websites I would have to say we easily have the best video/tv/radio production department in the conference, not to mention the most content throughout the year.  Criticism, when it comes to this topic, is something that I don't think any of us has a leg to stand on.  They do a lot with practically nothing!

However, maybe the criticism should actually be taken as a compliment, because they have done such a good job over the last few years of posting new videos and reports that you have now come to expect it by 10:17am on the first day of camp.

Absolutely nothing has happened in the past 10 days.  It's the slowest sports time of the year.  There's already a recap of day 1 up and a video from move in day.  I'd assume there will be a video recap of some of the practices this week too, I just hope they're able to make your deadline.

My last reply on this discussion, and please bear with me on my typing, as o am using a mobile device:

1. go to BGSU's site and you will see what I'm talki g about, a story titled "Players report wednesday, camp begins Thursday." the article includes a practice schedule, information about players who will be blogging after each practice and a general overview of the team's situation. Does BG have such a significant budget advantage over us that they can put out news about upcoming developments such as training camp?

2. In an earlier post I provided examples of feature related stories that were available on other school's sites. All of that content appeared in the week leading up to their camps. Obviously they are trying to build excitement/engagement among fans. Why can't we do something this basic?

3. everyone here is using budget cuts as an excuse, but I do believe Jason corriher is still on our media relations staff and is still in charge of writing football releases. So budget cuts don't wwork as an excuse.

4. I agree that the video production work is excellent, but that is the product of another department, not media relations. Further, working journalists don't use canned/prepackaged video as the basis for their stories. They do rely on regular news releases and other outreach from the media relations department.

5. Based on the arguments of a few of you, we should never expect to see a preview story on a major game, only an article on thenoutcome of the game? Wow, the bar is set pretty low. My son's division 3 lacrosse team gets better coverage than that.
department.

SBH,

I don't understand the big deal here.  You are upset over the non-release of what would be a 2 to 3 sentence announcement about camp starting?  AthensBlock is right...nothing has happened in the last 10 days.  Why do we need to announce that camp is starting when 1. almost every knows it is starting and certainly the people that check ohiobobcats.com know it is starting and 2. you can wait 3 or 4 more days for a recap of day 1 and a video of move-in day.  I highly doubt that in that 3 or 4 day window, the athletic department missed its window of opportunity to get people excited about football.  The first game isn't until 9/4 and I believe they did a recap of everyday of preseason last year.  That leaves a little less than a month for daily practice recaps and interviews to get people excited.

The point I am trying to make, and I believe others have tried to make to you, is why not show a little patience before starting a thread trying to rally the critics of the athletic department over something so minor?

Enjoy the new content on ohiobobcats.com!

I wonder if there will be a billboard outside the Convo blaming this lack of coverage on George Bush?

Well, Georgie did drive the car eight years into the ditch.  Give him the keys again!

He is in charge of writing football releases. Pre season practice reports are not releases. They're the icing on the cake. As I understand the entire media relations department is made up of four people. With all of the sports going on in the fall, not to mention the preparation that must go into getting ready for other sports seasons, that's just not a lot of time to go around for those four people. That staff puts in more hours than you probably realize to get what absolutely has to get done first and they still managed to get up a practice recap.
