As unbelievable as it might sound, the Salt Lake City Tribune is reporting that BYU is seriously considering leaving the MWC and going independent.  They are working on a cable TV deal that would expand their BYU network. They are actually calling it a Done Deal -- which probably means it won't fly!

I dont doubt it. Word is it's complete and Fresno State and Nevada are on the move from the WAC to the MWC with Boise State. Problem is, Fresno and Nevada will have to pay the WAC $5 million a piece for leaving, a stipulation the WAC put in place after Boise jumped.

BYU has a pretty big national following, and they are leaning on that to try and get a Notre Dame-like spot in the BCS. All of their other sports are joining the WAC, while football is remaining independent.

It's a done deal with Fresno State. So what does the WAC do now? They lose Boise State, Nevada and Fresno State. Do they go after a few Sun Belt or Conference USA schools? Should the Mountain West get the Big East's BCS bid? The times they are a changing.

Yeah, right. Good luck to the WAC in trying to collect that dough. You can't just put that stipulation in place long after membership is established and contracts are signed. They would have certainly had to sweeten the pot for the schools before any deal like that was made.

Simply put, I highly doubt that is true.  If Toledo and Buffalo were to leave the MAC, the MAC can't just suddenly say that it will cost any other schools $5M to leave.

Google it, there are literally 50 different news articles right now saying that is the deal, $5 Million to leave the conference.  In fact not one news story stating otherwise.  On top of the $5 Million dollar exit fee those schools will pay a $1 Million dollar entry fee.

if that's the case...

--------------
Fresno State might look idiotic for agreeing to a buyout clause with a conference just two months before it left the conference, but it also shows it believed Benson and the WAC had a chance to win the war.

The WAC almost did and, ultimately, Thompson had to make a desperate play for two schools that weren't good enough for him in June.

This wasn't about the BCS though. This was about survival. And Fresno State saved him.
------------------

... then obviously the WAC lawyers have better negotiating skills than Tim O'Shea's agent. I don't think there's any other angle here. Idiotic isn't a strong enough word. Still can't believe it.

The funny thing is supposedly BYU had requested the WAC create the buyout clause because it didn't want the confernece to change if it decided to join. Apparently, it wasn't enough for BYU to gets it way there.

Now BYU looks like the golf ball lost in the sand, being independent in football and all other sports to the WAC, which looks to be on the way out. I got $20 that says they never pull the trigger and stay in the MWC, they have until September 1 to do so.
