In a Fanhouse article OHIO is listed as receiving $850,000 from OSU which will be tied for the 4th highest payout given to a public institution this year.  Which makes us the highest paid team that was bowl-bound last year.

Got to love Ohio State, so nice of them to fund almost 15% of our Budget this year.  And just wait, I bet someone in the Convo figures out how to make that payout a donation so they can pad their OBC growth numbers.

Well then kudos to Mr. Shaus!

I for one think he's doing an excellent job overall!

After he confirmed for me that a Big 10 officiating staff would indeed be overseeing the game on the 18th, I asked him if it would be over stepping my boundries to ask why and whether both the '08 game and '10 game were signed under a single contract, he chose not to respond.  Which I suppose is kinder than actually telling me that I had indeed overstepped my boundries.

I'm sure he's learned lessons the hard way in this digial age though so I don't fault him...

Would separate contracts or a single contract for the 2009 and 2010 game be better?

Can somebody hit a pull up jumper for me?.....

While hoping not to stir up the anti conspiracy theory pundits yet again in the process...

In my (extremely humble) opinion, separate contracts would have been better as it would have allowed for a re-evaluation of the decision to allow a non neutral officiating staff.  That being said though, I'm sure it never occurred to anyone at the time that it would have as significant an effect as it did on the '08 game.

Again though, I certainly don't claim to be an AD and I would assume that OSU has a standard policy in place regarding their home out of conference contracts that could possibly have hampered negotiations in general for these two games.

Ohio actually had the option to use a MAC officiating crew for both games, the trade-off is a little less cash.  Not sure it matters anyway as the Big10 and MAC have an alliance where both officials fall under the same leadership and training (that's if you believe in the greater conspiracy).

Which leaves one to wonder why it would necessitate accepting less money...

In all honesty though, while my best case scenario would be a neutral crew, I think I'd rather see Big 10 than MAC considering some of the craziness I've seen in recent years...

Understand your thinking, but that option is standard contract material in all conferences.  And let's be honest that officiating did not effect the outcome nearly as bad as the NC State or the Kansas State games did in the Grobe era.

I'll give you the Kansas State game, but punting from the end zone in a monsoon rather than taking a safety cost us the NC State game...

Or the Miami game in Oxford that was stolen from us by incredibly bad officiating during the Grobe years.

Isn't it hard to take a safety from your own 45-yard line? Should have went for it on 4th and inches.

It shouldn't be when you have a 15 yd head start...    In all honestly I didn't remember we were that far out (mind is failing me already) but I agree in that case we should have gone for it (same result).  Thanks for the correction Mike!

You need a refresher on the NC State game.  We had to punt a 2nd time due to a phantom penalty, this was late in the game, monsoon conditions and that re-kick led directly to our demise.

As a I recall from my soggy vantage point, we were inside our 20.

For OCF's benefit Mike, it's have gone.  Seriously though and speaking from experience, it's pretty easy to take a safety from anywhere inside your own territory.  You can fall on the ball in the end zone or intentionally send (throw, bat or kick) it out of the end zone.  I did it twice in the first manner in a game in the Rubber Bowl when we beat Akron North 6 to 4 in 1970.  Hard to believe that was 40 years ago.

I had to look this up.

It was pretty long ago--another Hurricane Earl is on the way--but I remember Varone not snapping the ball on the midfield logo on the fourth-and-three when a defender jumped. (The Post article has it at our own 46.) Then we called a timeout in order to punt. After the holding penalty, Zastudil probably was standing on or inside our 20 for the blocked punt, so I guess it indeed was in range for him to turn around and chuck it out of the end zone. He was a HS QB after all.

Just to show how stupid coaches are, when was the last time you saw someone take a safety from the 20-30 yd line? I mean you have a top 10 Punter in the Nation, a great weapon on a sloppy field, a boomer in that situation and game is over.....wait we got that and then the phantom call and we re punt.

Yeah well if you do take the safety you still have your AA punter standing on the 20-yard line, this time with no rush. :)

The problem with the safety is there was still 2:21 left in the game and we led by three points. If we gave them two points then a field goal (they had already hit one in that weather I think) would beat us. Punting was the right call -- make them score a TD to win or go to OT with a FG -- you just can't whiff on the blocking. I still would have went for it on fourth and three. Just IMHO. I bet KW would have risen to the occasion.

Watching the weather channel from the shores of NC,  Earl is about to reappear.  Hope to make it back in time for Wofford.   Mike, it's still have gone.

The reason they pay less with a non big ten crew ? They need the money to pay them off they already paid the big ten crew  LOL
