New York Times football writer Paul Myersberg keeps the football fires simmering during the summer with a bottom-to-top assessment of the FBS teams. OUr number came up on July 5 ... at No. 60 -- which means that, in this writer's mind, we are better-equipped for success in 2010 than fully 50 percent of the other teams in college football.

While it represents merely an opinion by one person (perhaps with a lot of consultation involved), this ranking is about 50 spots better than what we would have deserved a very few years ago.

HUMOROUS UPDATE / ASIDE: Paul goes off-track occasionally, and a recent installment is a look at Nos. 70-51 through the eyes of the late Jerry Garcia. "Jerry" depicts former Nebraska AD Steve Peterson as a Muppet. You can get a chuckle about the dynamics of our good fortune in landing Coach Solich ... and all sorts of other tokes, er, I mean takes, on college football through the lyrical prose and glazed eyes of the late great guitar-man of the Grateful Dead by clicking here: http://www.presnapread.com/fridays-with-jerry-teams-nos-70-51/#more-5754.

You can read Paul's assessment of Ohio football here: http://www.presnapread.com/no-60-ohio/. When OUr number came up, 10 other MAC teams already were on the board (everyone except Northern Illinois, which since was tabbed No. 55, and Temple, which has been tabbed No. 44). The lineup of MAC projections is:

  44 - Temple
  55 - Northern Illinois
  60 - Ohio
  72 - Toledo
  82 - Central Michigan
  89 - Bowling Green
  92 - Western Michigan
  99 - Kent State
101 - Ball State
105 - Akron
108 - Buffalo
112 - Miami
119 - Eastern Michigan

Boise State is the latest team to be tabbed, at No. 2 ... Which makes Alabama No. 1. You can read about the Broncos' prospects here: http://www.presnapread.com/. The rest of the current "count-up" is on the right side of the page, with each team's assessment just a click away.

Enjoy!

ratings like this are fun for bar talk, but ultimately meaningless.  we'll know where we are as a program about 6 months from now, and then it will be time to start anew...

Right on, Brucecuth! But the prognostications are still lots of fun because they stir discussion.

>>>Low point A 20-10 loss to Central Michigan in the conference championship game. While Ohio has won a pair of division titles under Solich, the Bobcats have yet to win an overall conference championship since joining the F.B.S. on a permanent basis in 1983. All told, the program’s conference title drought stands at 41 years.<<<

Huh?  Where does get off making up facts like that?

The rest of the article is pretty good and contains some insightful analysis, but what the heck was he thinking when he wrote that we entered FBS football on a permanent basis in 1983?  FCS actually started in 1978.  We were never part of FCS.  Back in the late '50s we did compete for a short period of time in something called the "college division," but that has nothing to do with the FCS-FBS split.

Actually the entire MAC was reclassified to 1-AA status in 1982, against the will of the conference. The MAC played the season as if it were a 1-A conference, and the NCAA restored 1-A status for the 1983 season, but technically the NCAA records have the MAC as a 1-AA league in 1982. 1-AA didn't want us either, and the MAC champ was not eligible for the playoff. I believe the awkward looking faux-horseshoe look at Peden was constructed in response to the reclassification. The MAC needed to increase it's collective stadium size to remain 1-A. It is interesting that a lot of these haphazard expansions in the 80s--Yager, Doyt, Dix come to mind-- have since been removed.

FYI...we went 6-5 in 1982. We lost to Minnesota 57-3, beat Richmond in a hospital charity game played in Columbus and shut out Miami 20-0. BG won the MAC and played Fresno in the California Bowl even though the NCAA thought of the MAC as a 1-AA league. Eastern Kentucky, meanwhile, beat Delaware to win the 1-AA national championship.

We just have to be tougher than last year.  A lot tougher.  We need to bully people around this year.  This year we need to be a force.  Last year we were okay.

Do we want to be better than okay this year?!

Well, I had forgotten about that Mike.  But as recall it was pretty clear from the beginning that the whole thing was a bluff.  I remember, now that you bring this unfortunate incident to mind, that from the very beginning people in the MAC office and the AD's office here on campus said that we would not be reclassified.  I think there was even a hint of legal action against the NCAA.  I don't think the MAC now even recognizes that year as anything other than another 1A year.  Perhaps, they need to sue the NCAA to straighten out its records!

Meyersburg is pretty high on Solich and it got me thinking- we're so conditioned to think that when we get a good coach like Solich or Groce that its just a matter of time before they split for greener pastures but, with Frank turning 66 this year how likely is it that he skips out and starts over somewhere else? From a distance it seems like he actually enjoys coaching at Ohio and is content. For those close to the ground, what do you think the odds are that Solich retires a Bobcat?

66...As an exec who made numerous hiring decisions and was involved in others, I know that a continuing reality is what I call Unspoken Age Discrimination.  Whatever Coach Solich's abilities and energy level, it seems unlikely that another 1-A program would take on a 66-year-old coach.  Chief concerns: how long would a  66-year-old want to stay in the saddle and how long before major health problems emerge?

If I remember correctly, he was in attendance once when Ohio played NW.  I can't recall now who won.  I know that we beat them something like 15-14 (from memory) in the early 1970s.

Yes, Ohio won that game. Anytime Ohio plays Northwestern, I'll be wearing purple, though. For me to wear green when Ohio plays Northwestern would be like an Ohio grad wearing Scarlet and Gray when the Bobcats play at Ohio A&M. Obviously it would be totally wrong for any Ohio grad to do that....
