I suppose 64 meshes well with the team rankings in general for 2010 but I have to say all the love being poured on Al Golden and Temple is starting to rub me the wrong way.

Coach Solich is 24 & 16 in conference play since taking over and has 2 MAC East Championships to his credit.  I think it's fair to say he took over just as big a mess at Ohio as Golden did at Temple and yet Al's the genius.  We took them to the woodshed last year and now I guess one running back is going to ensure that they steamroll the MAC.

No way should Solich be ranked lower than Rich Rod at Michigan.

64th place in one guys mind is a little disappointing.

Rooting for Akron is like cheering on the Taliban.

Nice to see Grobe at 32 though...And a good point that he does it all with higher admissions standards...Such a great leader...

Just out of curiosity, why are we as a nation obsessed with ratings?  Just a question because I'll admit I get a kick out of seeing how folks rank restaurants, hotels and wines.

I agree. I think this has less to do with OU vs TU as it does Athens vs Philly.  Its about the size of the media market mixed in with some old fashioned East Coast bias. And regarding Solich vs Golden I guess you can argue that Golden's sucess is more suprising simply because Solich is a much more successful coach.

And if are like me, very often you diasagree with them-maybe not.  I'm a bit of a contrarian so I'm usually in the minority.

There are some strange picks outside the top 10 -- seems like he's a fan of big-time CFB and doesn't really follow the smaller teams.  He actually refers to Turner Gill's 20-30 overall record at Buffalo as "sub-par."  Somebody should enlighten him as to what "par" is at the University of Buffalo.

As a FWIW, to rate coaches I use Sagarin Predictor numbers to compare one year with other years, and then look at a coaches ability to produce continuous improvement by that measure. There will be ups and downs, as some teams will be better than others, so I average multiple years together. By that measure Golden ranks at the top in the MAC averaging +2.7 rating points per year. Gill was about the same. Solich is lower at +1.1, but still excellent. If I am right about how Ohio will do this year and next, by the end of 2011 his rating will be much higher. Interestingly long time coaches Cubit at WMU and Martin at Kent have negative ratings by my formula, a pattern that, if it continues, often leads to a new coach.

There seems little doubt that Gill, Golden, and Solich are all good coaches, and that all did well at their respective schools. I personally would rank all three in the top 1/3 of the coaches in the country.
