Wofford gave up over 37 points a game last year going 3-8, they did play Wisconsin but lost 44-14. Looks like they had a lot of injuries last year that are returning this year, 9 starters back on offense and defense.

When is the last time we've blown somebody out for the opener? I think we're about due.

last year we had 11 season-ending injuries among the starters causing them to miss a total of 89 games. 8 were acl tears. we lost both offensive and defensive leaders, including best running back and best line backer. yeah, it was a tough season for the terriers. we had a very young team (and still do) that was not very consistent with their execution causing us to have 25 turnovers as compared to 10 the year before.  we should be better on both sides of the ball this season if we can stay healthy. the injuries are piling up already though, link below. we have several key players out for your game. definitely not going to help.

we probably won't win but if we execute and don't lose anymore players, we will give your guys a very good game!

It will not be a good sign if we do not win this one decisively, giving our backups substantial p.t.

The motto this year is 'unfinished business.'

Team no respect--We get awfully little from the alleged pundits.

If there was to be a line on this game I would expect Ohio to be a 16-21 point favorite.
Like others I too would like us to be able to play many 2nd & 3rd teamers.
I don't expect the play calling to be anything but vanilla.
I would like the "D" to start off with a huge number of take-a-ways.

Nothing against the Terriers, but didn't we have a lot more than 11 players, mostly starters, lost last season to injury? I can think of Boo, Dunlop, S. Jackson., Luchsinger, Weaver, Flowers, C. Meyers, H. Dawson, Carl Jones, Gonzales-Santos, Jay Edwards, just off the top of my head. Not to mention a suspension/injury in T. Carrie and guys like Morsillo, Schussler and J. Meyers who hung up the cleats early prior to the summer.

none taken. we don't have the depth of talent you guys have. our main guys get hurt and the same level of talent just isn't always there to fill in. we only have 1450 students...and 52% are female!!! that only gives us a little under 700 males to choose from to field all of our sports teams! numerous major injuries cripple us.

we aren't being cocky or disrespectful when there is talk on our board about beating an fbs school. we usually have one big school on our schedule each season and we are usually optimistic  about our chances because most "big" schools take us for granted, are usually thinking about the next game and usually aren't very familiar with our complex option. we have much confidence in our coaches, schemes and players! our guys always leave it all on the field! we as devoted fans take a lot of pride in that and the fact that we, small wofford college with our undersized players, are able to compete (for a while) with the bigger schools.

we have played south carolina very close the last two meetings ('06,'08). in '06 we were at the end of a 12 play, 5 minute drive on the 10 yard line with 30 seconds on the clock only down 27-20. we had a pitch intercepted to keep us from winning. i say "winning" because we would have without a doubt gone for 2!!! we played south florida tough the first half in '09 and had them wondering which way was up...until our long snapper sent the ball over the punters head  twice!!! allowed them to score 9 pts in less than 1 minute and a half. until then, we had matched 'em on defense and offense. the whole stadium was quiet. we played wisconsin in the 1st round of the ncaa tourney. we had the lead several times in the second half and were tied with 30 seconds left. our guard dribbled it off his leg out of bounds with 17 ticks left. we fouled they hit them. we only lost by 4!!!

no disrespect. we always think we have a chance. i know ya'll are predicted to be 2nd in your division and i know you have a HUGE OL! ...that you have 28,000+ students we only have 14000 living alumni!!!  still, we give ourselves a chance. why bother playing or showing up as fans, if we didn't think we have a chance??? you may crush us, if we don't execute and protect the ball or...if the perfect storm hits, we could almost, maybe have a chance to shock you guys. who knows? we just LOVE the challenge (and of course the pay check, lol).

i am looking forward to the trip and having a few beers with some of you prior to the game. will be up fri and staing at ouinn. should be a blast!! here's to a hard fought and injury free game for both teams!

Coach Solich always says that we simply aren't good enough to just show up and expect to win against any opponent. This team will be a test and we better be sure to respect them.

Option teams can cause big problems. Two years ago against VMI, they had us wondering which way was up for about 3/4 of the game. Last year against Cal Poly, we really shut them down. Hard to say what will happen game to game. Jim Grobe's teams had lots of defenses completely spooked, even bigger schools like Kansas State and Minnesota, but Miami (when they were still good) always seemed to have an answer.

Good point DFC. I think it can only help that a majority of our defensive players have played against the triple option attack in the past two seasons.

crabby...I hope our team respects you, because a lot of us old timers remember Wofford almost taking down Marshall when they were the top MAC team. Not much difference between the Southern Conference and the MAC, truth to be told. FCS schools sometimes get more touted BCS transfers and the MAC has a bit better depth. The MAC has improved it's speed over the years, but the SoCon used to have an advantage there. I imagine the Terriers approach this game the same way we do when we play a BCS foe like Ohio State. It will probably be harder than most Ohio fans expect--definitely more talent at Wofford than at a school like Gardner-Webb or VMI. That's one of the reasons FCS games are sometimes "no win," but we also play schools where it "no win" for them to play us. We've taken out Pitt, Illinois and UK in recent seasons and have put scares into schools like Ohio State.

Today is Frank's press conference, the MAC coaches' press teleconference and the initial Frank Solich Radio Show of the season. If we don't know the 'official' word by this evening, we won't know til the first quarter Saturday.

It looks like the Terriers are losing good players right and left.  They just announced losing their best defensive player for the year.  Their starting and back up tailbacks and starting fullback(All-American) are out. They're apparently starting a 17 year old freshman linebacker.  I'm guessing this looks like less of a game than before, but anything can happen.

By the way, while we couldn't stop VMI for 3 quarters as mentioned above, we didn't exactly stop Cal Poly's running attack either - 239 yards-54 carries.  What really killed them was their passing 1 for 11 for 12 yards or whatever.

I don't think Wofford's small enrollment really means much.

The bottom line is, Wofford generally is competitive in a very strong I-AA conference, the SoCon.  So they recruit accordingly the same number of football players found at schools like Appy State and Georgia Southern.

http://www.goupstate.com/article/20100830/NEWS/100839971/1090/sports02?Title=Terriers-injuries-adding-up-Mike-Niam-doubtful-for-year

yes, i am sad to say, we are losing players left and right. apparently, we have a number of true freshmen on the depth chart due to injuries! this is what killed our season last year. that being said, we will still play hard but just will not have the level of developed talent on the field needed to be as successful. i said in my first or second posts that we needed to stay healthier this season.

now, about the small enrollment. it is not the only problem we have to overcome. we have much more stringent academic requirements than schools like appy and georgia southern. our SAT average is 1237.  our admissions department gives no free passes. (we had to pass on armanti edwards because he refused to take SAT over. appy picked him up and won two national championships with him at qb. he passed for 10,000+ and rushed over 4000!!!). we can't just recruit true athletes. we not only have to find athletes that are a fit in our unique offensive and defensive schemes but they have to have the grades as well. then we have to squeeze this into our small community with a trend towards more and more female applicants (funny, we were all male until 1977).  we don't even have all of our scholarships fully funded. so i think all of this definitely affects our level of depth and injuries do have a major affect. in spite of all of this, we have had some very competetive teams the last 10 yrs or so.

i have just been amazed at how our coaches get so much out of our players and teams. looking forward to saturday!

Wofford is in the best non-BCS conference, along teams like Appalachian State. Many of the teams in the Southern conference would be competitive in the MAC, so this is no pushover. There are some weak FCS schools out there, but Wofford is not one of them.

While I think Wofford is a solid team, I don't think they will be competitive. I  think that this will be Solich's best Ohio team yet, though I expect the 2011 team to be even better. The defenses the last few years have been solid, and this one will be, too. The excellent defensive line with be able to control the line of scrimmage, and the defense has speed and athleticism throughout. They will get some turnovers, but also will keep Wofford in difficult down situations and won't need to rely on turnovers for stops.

Ohio offenses under Solich have been adequate, but never explosive. I can't remember any years when they were able to take the other team out of games early. The 9-5 seasons came as a result of staying competitive, and winning close games, not blowing teams out. This year will be different. I predict that Ohio's offense is going to put up some big numbers. I think we'll see a big jump in offensive production, and some games with 400 yards of total offense or more.

Wofford fans may think they can win this game. I believe they are mistaken, and that it won't take them long to realize it. I think Ohio is both hungry and explosive. I think Ohio takes control of this game in the first half, and a lot of players play for Ohio in the second half, and I think that despite the fact that I think Wofford is actually a good team. I think Wofford is just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

i think those fan's thoughts were before the injuries started piling up. i also think most expressed that "we had a chance" to win...if all things were good: no injuries, no turnovers, great execution, great ball control and minimal mistakes. ( "what else do you want for christmas little boy?")

when we face a tough team like ou, we have to be optimistic. why would go into any game without giving ourselves a chance???
