At home, I'm pulling for them, even if they are OUr rivals... 21-6, against the in-state power they have never beat.... Go Herd!

I've seen crazier things happen.

I'm pulling for them too... but I don't consider them our rivals. They weren't rivals on my watch and I refuse to dignify them with the title of rival.

Considering that I can see Huntington from my house, that my co-workers are 75% Marshall fans, and that my wife actually works at Marshall, I'm bregrudgingly pulling for them as well, altough I would 100,000X rather beat Marshall than osu (yes, feel free to hurl scorn at me for that opinion, but it's how I feel, growing up within a literal stone's throw from WV....).

That being said, I am not impressed with Marshall at all. Through 7.33 quarters, their offense has consisted of 2 big plays. If WVU didn't have a coach who is possibly mentally retarded, Marshall would not be in this game at all. WVU has moved the ball at will in the spread, which Marshall has had next to no answer for, and then for some reason switches to the I formation inside the 30. Add in the total emotional devotion to this game for the entire Marshall community, and there's no reason why Marshall shouldn't be winning.

2 weeks and a day from now, Marshall won't be as pumped, OHIO will be looking for revenge, and Frank will have the boys in Hunter Green ready. Lee Smith is their only player that impresses me. Way too early prediction: OHIO 34, Marshall 17.

Marshall choked. Not a complete choke job (WVU did go 90+ yards for the last score), but you see this countless times -- defenses laying down whenever there is a 4th quarter lead.

And yes, Marshall is NOT OUr rivals. Never has been, never will be. Wonder where those geniuses are now that thought up of that river bell - I though that got washed ashore somewhere in the Hocking near Coolville. Maybe Sonny Randle tripped over it while fishing for catfish to feed to his dog.

**sigh** Well, crap. Always like to see the little guy upset the big state school. Maybe the universe is saving up that for the next week. We can only hope.

Also, I think maybe this is a good outcome for our matchup in 2 weeks. This is about as deflating a loss as it gets. Several Marshall fan co-workers have said to me that without a win Holliday's honeymoon is over after this week. There is some serious questioning of why he is sticking with Anderson at QB, and why he burned Sullivan's red shirt last week. Throw in the complete implosion in the last 9 minutes of this game, along with severe Marshall insecurities over having ahead coach who knows how to close out a game, and we could be looking at some serious infighting in the Marshall team. If BUGS beats them next week, we could face a Marshall team in 2 weeks that is completely despondent and hopeless.

I'd rather beat a team when they are playing their best, but I'd also rather beat a team at their worst than lose any day.

I feel bad for the kicker, Tyler Warner.  He is a really good kid from Parkersburg and that kick was really close.  Tough way to lose the game even if it should have never gotten to OT.  Another lesson in not having the killer instinct.  The fumble late in the 4th was the real downfall of the game for Marshall.

Tough loss to wvu in Huntington before 41,382 fans (new Edwards Stadium attendance record) .  I have never understood the hatred by OU fans toward Marshall since most Marshall fans doesn't consider OU as a serious rival.

Generally, it's a friendly rivalry, I think, mostly due to proximity. Both fan bases like being able to easily go on the road, have a few beers before and after the game with opposing fans, and generally talking college football.

Personally, it's a function of growing up in the Huntington media market, where 80% of college sports coverage might as well be Jan Brady with a speech disorder, screaming, "MARSHALL MARSHALL MARSHALL!!!!!", with the remainder split 15% WVU, 4% osu, and 1% a random assortment of college teams, including D-2 teams, and rarely OHIO, even though it's in the media market as well.

Marshall looks like they aren't going to be an easy one for Ohio. They are tough at home. They have some talent on that team. They dominated a Big East team for 55 minutes. Ohio will need to bring its A game to beat Marshall.  Ohio State looks a lot better than West Virginia .  That's what this game proved.  Big East looks very weak this year, so we shall see if Marshall a bowl  team or is West Virginia just that bad.

I'm now dead certain that we should never use puke-brown on an alternate third jersey, becuase it really didn't work when Marshall used it all over themselves.

Talk about a bummer evening: Go to the Ohio-Tennessee Vball match and squirm through a painful Vols rally to win the fifth game and the match ... then go to the hotel and turn on the Marshall-WVU game at 21-6 and watch and squirm through that finish.  Marshall is both a backyard rival and "family," as far as I'm concerned. So the finish of that game was far from an occasion for celebration. In fact, it sucked.

Growing up across the river from Marshall and having to hear nothing but Marshall when I go back there, I'm happy to see them lose.  I suppose that they ar erecruiting a lot of the same local guys that we are although they are going national (the south) w/Holliday -look at all their Florida recruits this year. As far as a rivally, it,s true that proximity is the main thing going.  Back in my day, we usually thrashed Marshall pretty good.  They have developed the type of following that I wished we had (due mostly due to their coming back from the depths of despair tthat they were in during the 70's to becoming annual winners until recently).   Their fan base is mostly local, ours is more scattered as far as I can tell.  Ther are in a much bigger metro area to draw from-that helps.

Marshall should have won and I wanted them to win. Anyone on here who cannot suspend the idiocy of a university sanctioned rivalry doesn't get it.

WVU is the big brother and while their players and coaches said all the right things going into the game vs. Marshall; WVU's athletic office is basically saying that traveling to Huntington every other year is a waste of time. We (and the other FBS schools in Ohio) don't even get a sniff of an Ohio State road game because they assume we already know it's a waste of tOSU's precious time. WVU is actually telling Marshall that this arrangement is worthless to their aspirations.

This is a perfect example of a presumed equal (FBS) telling another FBS school that they are a waste of time, energy, and resources. We want teams like Marshall, Boise, Houston, TCU, and us to beat teams like WVU and OSU and others because it places a square peg into their round hole and thus underlining the argument that the current system is a pile of crap.

Ugh...this is so FBS-IA. (Conf USA, MAC, and Sun Belt). Those of us who accept our lot in life and play for nothing every year.

Gives me an idea! Maybe we should have an FBS IA tournament. The winner gets some Little Caesar Pizza, a Commodore 64 gaming system, and tickets to FBS Championship Game (upper deck, in the corner so they're not in the way).

I don't mind hating on Marshall, but this should be the one time that every Ohio fan roots for Marshall. It provides a little ammunition for why we shouldn't take this crap from $100 million monsters in the FBS. We're getting screwed by these arses every year, but then root against each other when we can get a chance to make a point.

I'm going off on a tangent here, but it's somewhat related to last night's game. I'm sitting at a high school football game and checking my phone many times to find this score, wondering why in an area as football-crazy as West Virginia they chose a Friday night to play. (That's rhetorical...I know why they chose Friday night...ESPN...but screw THOSE guys).

And that goes for any teams located in high school football-rich areas. If you're the Rutgers or the UConns of the college football world, knock yourself out and play on Friday night. I understand schools that are in metro areas with few social ties to high school football, but Ohio and West Virginia are largely identified culturally by their high school football.

Playing on a Friday night just feels wrong to me.The one regrettable thing about that Ohio win over Pitt is that it came on a Friday night, so half the state of Ohio didn't watch it. It was a seminal moment in the program's history, and most people were driving home from their hometown's football game. As they should.

So to summarize: Brian had to work and didn't get to watch the game last night, so he's pissy about it and made a broader statement about Friday games based on that pissiness. That's the end of my  rant.

And the point is?  It is what it is. I'm not so sure how we're getting screwed.  If we could get 60,000-heck-even 40,000- fans who really care into our stadium, have a budget that's more like $60,000,000 instead of $20,000,000 and not need $15,000,000 or whatever in student fees to support the program and still  lose millions, then I can understand how we're getting screwed.  The BCS schools and a few non-BCS schools knew how to play the game and many of them weren't even where Ohio was 40 years ago.  We're as responsible as they are for where we are now. If we're not willing (or able) to put the resources into getting to the next level-we are where we are.

My point is- Put  the best team on the field you can, play the game hard, and enjoy it.  Then, if we win, we can prove that you can win with less.  I'm not about to play the -oh-woe is me-crap.

It's an argument for another time, but I believe there are many conditions unique to Ohio's program that precluded it from ever doing what those other  power programs did over the last 40 years.

I was pulling for Marshall, but I did get a kick out of the result. The last time we played Marshall in the regular season (2004) we lost by 3 because Brooks Rossman did what he did best (missing a relatively easy FG) with 25 seconds left in the game. It all comes around!

It's nice when it's other teams that have the crappy kicker.

This is not "woe is me". This is having something legitimately tangible to play for...and don't give me the Little Caesar/Blockbuster/GM Bowl. A legitimate and worthwhile enterprise.

While I understand this is difficult; I'm not getting paid to figure it all out and I wish there was more immediacy amongst the majority of these FBS-IAA schools to place pressure on those who would rather us collect scraps.

This is an immensely unfair scenario. Even the EPL have big difference between the Haves (Man U) and the Have Nots (Chesterfield and their like), but there's a system in place to make sure they have to prove it (one way or another) that they are actually, in fact, better.

The problem is we accept the system when it could be so much more. We're like fans of the Doors. Allow me to quote Lester Bangs; "The Doors (in this case, college football), should be so much better."
