USA Today is reporting that 'Nova has been asked to join the Big East.  What a shock.  If they go, certainly Temple can't be far behind. (and they have a 12,500 seat stadium!) Any thoughts?

This was mentioned on the CMU/Temple thread, but it deserves its own IMO.

if they go then there's no way Temple goes. Why would the BE want two Philly teams? I know Temple fans love to talk about how they're too good for the little ole MAC but the reality is they've had one winning season in the past 30 years and have only beaten one team (Navy 2009) that  finished the season with a winning record in the last 10 years. BE chose to take the Philly team with the FCS championship instead.

Some good info here:

Citizens Bank park would be an interesting option for home games.

Interesting in light of the fact that we have another thread on here where Temple is excoriated for "only" beating an "inferior" Villanova squad by 7 points.

I know this would have sounded crazy in 2004, but replacing Virginia Tech, Miami, Boston College and Temple with Louisville, Cincinnati, South Florida and Connecticut hasn't been as disastrous as it seemed it would be at the time. Va Tech has been consistently good, but MIami and BC kind of fell off a table for a few years. Louisville was a national power for a few years. UC made it to BCS game. South Florida was good and Connecticut has been good.

The conference is by no means great or anything, but it hasn't completely been obliterated like I thought it would be in 2005.

The biggest injuries have been self-inflicted, with West Virginia losing all momentum with the loss of RichRod, Syracuse jumping into a lake and Pitt consistently underachieving.

I'm not here to defend Temple, but they have apparently come a long way in the past few years.

The best reason I would know to have 2 teams is to sort of saturate the Philly area-after all there's 5 million+ people in the metro area. With all the pro teams there, it might help to have 2 college teams in the league to gather more people's attention. (since I'm guessing some follow Nova, some Temple)

But they may be getting the one they want and not care for Temple.

Problem might be that the fanbase is too split. Throw in a lot of Penn State fans, Rutgers fans (branch campus in Camden), and Penn (FCS, but still). Add the fact that a half million of those people live in New Castle County, DE and couldn't care less about Temple and dislike Villanova. I don't think that the Big East would be interested in picking up two teams from the area. Villanova is definitely the better choice from a fanbase perspective.

Very small private catholic school. Only 7k students.  I don't see how they can support a BCS caliber football program.  Even if Ohio were offered I bet we would have to turn it down because we don't have to resources to committ to BCS football.

According to Villanova University, their undergrad enrollment surpasses the 10,000 (11,368) mark. In comparison, the following universities are smaller than Villanova:

62. Notre Dame 11,603
63. Syracuse 11,000
64. Northwestern 7,800
65. Wake Forest 6,500
66. Vanderbilt 6,402

So...I guess Notre Dame sucks because they are a relatively small Catholic university...and, in their case, in the middle of nowhere.

This is about $$$$$ and not size. Villanova will do this because they want to do this. Whether this is right or wrong is another question, but they want to and if they pour money into it, they will be successful. Right now, Villanova spends $23.5 million on athletics...this is with a FCS team.

In comparison, Ohio spends, according to what I've read around here, a couple nickles over $20 million?

And we wonder how Villanova is going to be successful in the FBS? Heck?! How can we even be  successful in FBS?
