The Morning After

I wanted to wait until this morning to comment on Toledo, hoping that a night's sleep would give me some space and a perspective that I could find some hope in. It didn't. I'm as disappointed today as I was yesterday. All of my thoughts have been already expressed on this board, so I'm glad to know I'm not being ridiculous.

The Good: A respectible showing by the defense. Take away the Toledo touchdown drives of 2 and 3 yards, respectively, and we only gave up 7 points. On any other night, that should be enough to win. Also, Weller nailed a 49 yarder that would have been good from 59.

The Bad: Zero control over the line of scrimmage. We couldn't open any holes for running backs, we couldn't pass protect, we couldn't get any push on defense. We wouldn't make first contact with their runners until 3 yards down field. I don't know why Toledo ever threw the ball with that kind of effort. We had zero energy for any part of the game. Toledo had the emotion, and it showed in every facet of the game.

The Disgusting: Play calling. Play calling play calling play calling. Last week, we didn't really start moving the ball until we started throwing the ball down the field. This week, our lone touchdown was a down-the-field pass. Our second biggest play was a pass interference call on a down-the-field pass. Those were the only two down-field passes I saw. Any 12 year old who has ever played Madden can tell you that a non-option team should not run the option on 3rd & 8, you should THROW THE BALL DOWN THE FIELD. We have the best WR corps in the MAC, and all we throw are screen passes and slants. Absolutely disgusting. This is the first time in the last 5 years that I have lost faith in our coaching staff. I need something big to restore that faith.

It's been said on here already, but this was by far the most disappointing OU football game I have ever attended, and I went to school during The Dark Days of the Brian Knorr Era. At least back then, you expected ineptitude. We are supposed to be among the best in the MAC. We are supposed to be a bowl team. We are not supposed to look this pathetic.

I know we always blow one conference game each year we have no business losing, and I hope this was it for this year. I'm just sorry I had to witness it.

Exactly how bad is Boo's shoulder? The TD pass to a wide-open Dunlop took forever to get there. I counted at least four times (and probably a lot more) that we ran short underneath stuff on third and long, in hopes that the receiver could make something happen, that gained little to nothing.

I was in favor of redshirting Tettleton, and everybody loves the backup quarterback, but I'm afraid that Boo just doesn't have the arm strength any more.

I think a better question than Jackson's arm health is how bad is Bates' hand or how awful is Tettleton or how willing are our coaches to $#!^can a season with a quarterback that can't hit a receiver's hands from 7 yards.

If it's so bad that it prevents us from using our most effective weapons (WR corps) in the most effective manner (stretching the field) then he needs to come out of the game. Again, that's on the coaches.

From my vantage point, it looked like Bates was warming up on the sidelines in the 2nd half, but he never came in. Maybe his thumb was hurt and he wouldn't have been any better, but he couldn't have been any worse.

I would kill for Josh Febus to be on the roster right now. His cannon would be huge this season... I'm going to go throw up now that I've said that.

On the long TD pass, the reason it was so soft is he was belly to back with an O-Lineman who was getting blown up into Boo's lap, lucky that pass only gets off with Boo's athleticism.

The gamelong strategy of "pass for 2 yards" and "run for a loss" really paid off on that lone TD of ours...[barf]

Does anyone else feel like Columbus creates some kind of vortex that sucks in any and all quality football aways from the expanses of Ohio? Short of the Buckeyes (painful to admit), pretty much every Ohio team beyond high school forgot to show up and play football this weekend. Akron lost to a 1-AA, Cincinnati let Indiana State hang around way too long, KSU lost to BC (played tough I have to say), our titanic struggle with the Rockets and of course the awe inspiring performances of our two NFL Teams.

If I didn't know any better, I would have thought that the same coaching staff that called our game Saturday hopped the redeye to Boston and put on orange and black to coach up Mike Brown's reform program.
