The good news is I pulled behind a person at the pumps with an Ohio State Alumni (even though they were only one person; they must suffer from dissociative identity disorder) license plate frame and jumped out of my car and, clapping the beat, screamed out Stand Up & Cheer in his direction while other refuelers stood by with confused or frightened looks.

The bad news is I wore a sweater vest today by accident.

And do you think this person had any clue what you were doing?

Does it really matter?

Tim,
As long as the vest wasn't red, this was a successful encounter IMHO...

Had an opportunity to add the U on to the OH-IO cheer this morning here at work...Needless to say, I'm an especially unpopular guy around here this week...

Nice work, gentlemen.

Young Andrew, the high school frosh, has worn Ohio gear to school every day this week -- Monday was "We are Ohio, You Just Live Here", Tuesday was "OS Who?" and today is a traditional green Ohio Bobcats with Attack Cat logo tee. And, yes, he wears the gear with pride no matter what people at school say or do.

As for me, a more low key approach -- I've been playing 110 music every time I pass Ohio Stadium on my commute to/from the office. I use "Stand Up & Cheer" and "Long Train Runnin'."

BTW -- From what I've been hearing from the local sports commentators and players/coaches associated with OSU, we're getting a lot more respect than I expected. Especially, with a 30+ point line on the game. The main themes have been we are the only team among the next 4 opponents that had a winning record last year, and, that we led going into the 4th quarter the last time we visited Columbus.

Go, Ohio!

Wow. They actually do that cheer at your workplace? I would go insane. That might force me into becoming the disgruntled employee who comes in and shoots up the place. Glad you could salvage it by adding the U.

I believe that because they are situated in Columbus, the Ohio Legislature, the Supreme Court and every state office is opened each day with "that" cheer, followed, of course by "Hang On Sloopy" the "official" rock song of the state.
If the soon to be ex-Governor can use loyalty to Ohio A&M as a debate point, as he did last night, then everything else that goes on here pales in comparison.{SIGH}

Oh yeah...Living and working in Central Ohio tries the patience routinely.  Most of my friends here have been well trained not to do it around me by this point but occasionally a newbie slips up.  Which is exactly why I live for weeks like this.  I've bumped up my normal Ohio garb quotient from the usual game weekend Fridays to cover the entire week this week.  Most are friends that expect it but other's I pass in the hallway just can't get beyond it...It's really entertaining.  Any wall / shelf space not covered with pictures of or art from the kids is dominated by Ohio Green & White and much like Joe's Son, ours wear their Bobcat colors to school as much as possible!

This is unacceptable. I would most definitely be fired for punching my coworker in the face. Disgusting.

Good to hear you're fighting the good fight. I wear my OHIO gear around here as much as possible, including to Delaware Blue Hens games (I haven't gotten my student loan check yet so I have resisted the desire to splurge on some UD gear). I am happy to say that since school started I've seen two other people on the street proudly wearing OHIO Bobcats gear and I have yet to see anyone wearing Suckeyes garb. I hope it stays that way!

I would give anything for my boys to turn out like this.  Them turning into OSU fans is my worst fear (no, not lieterally my worst fear).  Any tips you want to give to keep them away from the red kool-aid, let me know.

Funny thing last night.  Ran into a friend who is a huge WVU fan, and a Bobcat fan as well.  This person proceeded to get on the soap box about OSU fans and how they hate ones who never attended OSU and wear Scarlet and Gray and watch every Buckeye game.  Funny thing is this person is a Die Hard WVU fan, never attended WVU, no family at WVU and wears their WVU gear every Saturday.  When asked what the difference was between them and the OSU fans they despise they simply walked away :)

Here's what I've done. I show my own pride in the green and white.I've given him some good memories. We often go to home games for football and basketball, and, he brings his buddies.  He's gone to one MAC championship football game, a bowl game, some MAC hoops tourney games and two NCAA appearances. Road trips are always fun. We keep him stocked in Ohio gear.

As you know from living in central Ohio, OSU athletics is front and center every day. So, everybody is exposed to OSU fandom all the time. There are many things I respect and appreciate about it -- traditions, some outstanding teams and the depth of support fans have for the Buckeyes. If he wanted to be a fan of a team based in his hometown, I think that would be fine. But, he's the kind of kid who doesn't do something just because a lot of other kids are doing it. He is his own man.

So, the advice is simple. Spend time with your boys at Ohio games. Let them know what you love about Ohio University. Make sure they have some Ohio gear to wear. Raise them to be confident in standing up for what they believe in and support. Then, see where it goes.

Go, Ohio!

BTW -- He is up and ready for school. Today, he's wearing a white t-shirt with the Attack Cat and Ohio Football written on the front.  And regardless of what happens tomorrow, I'm sure he'll be wearing Ohio gear some next week, too.

When we moved to Columbus in 1996, I began taking our sons, then 7 and 4, to Bobcat games - football, basketball and hockey. They wore Bobcat gear to school and family functions and suffered for it. Rather than crumble, they stiffened their resolve.

Through the years, I would tell them, despite my affection for Ohio University, that they can't make their college choices solely on rooting preference - for a while, for example, my elder son was looking at becoming a veterinarian, and my younger son was considering a career in architecture.

Today, my elder son attends OU to study wildlife conservation and is front and center in the O-zone (and Gang Green). His younger brother, the high-school senior and future civil engineer, isn't looking anyplace besides the Russ College of Engineering and Technology. Why? "It just feels like home there."

So to those who say that sports don't matter when it comes to recruiting students, I respectfully disagree.

Oh, and my boys would rather eat dirt than wear scarlet and gray, and going to Ohio State was, in their eyes, never an option.

Best topic ever.

Even if we lose on Saturday, they'll still be...whatever and we'll still be The Ohio University.

Victory!

Thanks guys...I agree with your strategies and have many already implemented.  My 3 year old has been to around 20 basketball games and 5 football games, and I figure that will only increase as he (and my 1 year old) gets older.

I also try to stress being interested in the game itself and all the nuisances surrounding every moment.  If they can understand to enjoy the game itself, then they have a much less chance of becoming a Buckeye bandwagoner...who are primarily concerned with rankings, tailgating, and fight songs.

Anyone who say sports don't play a factor are foolish. My dad (MedinaKat) never forced Ohio athletics on me... He didnt need to. Watching Fears amd Williams take us to the big dance my freshman year of hs made me a bobcat. No way around it. I was posting on this board before I even applied to go here. Was there any doubt at that point where I wanted to go? If my younger brother isnt playing sports in college (not offered at ohio), he will be a bobcat. I wouldnt force him to go to ohio, but its obvious he has way too much fun jumping in the ozone to go anywhere else.

I've seen crazier things happen.
