I have a mixed view. Can't say it is entirely positive for the university, but couldn't stop laughing watching the videos earlier today.

What are mascots for?

Are they for entertainment?

If so that was about as entertaining as it gets.  I've yet to have an OSU fan tell me to my face that it was an outrage.....they think it was funnier than h-e-double hockey stick.

No such thing as bad publicity.

Pub about student athletes who break the law or colleges with low graduation rates etc etc. would definately be bad pub.

A mascot who acts like a mascot is good pub.

This is free publicity.  If our marketing department has any savvy, this is a huge plus.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Can't say I'm surprised at the results anymore. It's the way of the world.

White House party crashers, Paris Hilton, Octomom, Rufus... it's a "hey, look at me" world and that's how this illustrious group rolls.

Had the game been somewhat close, it would have been good. As it is, it is continually drawing attention to the fact that "we got destroyed, but at least the mascot won."

This is a mascot acting like an a-hole.

If the roles were reversed, I can only imagine the outcry on this site.

The bad part is it gives A&M snobs yet another reason to put down OU.  Alums Colleen Marshall (dressed in green, by the way) and Marshall McPeak, both on-air people at Ch. 4 Columbus, had to spend two or three minutes on last night's news defending the OU student body.  (Colleen has two daughters going there.)

The good part is that it may take some of the pressure off the team this week, because nobody's talking about how they stunk up the Shoe.

If they needed 2-3 minutes defending the student body they didn't do a good job.

This is an easy thing to explain.  Repeat after me:  One person making a dumb decision doesn't define a whole university.  And just keep repeating that.  The people that matter understand.  Those that don't we should all just shrug off.

Eh. You join the tool when you praise and celebrate his act.

If the poll results were opposite, your point would stand. Though, on Facebook, most Bobcats I see are as proud as they were after the win over Georgetown. That says a lot.

One program is pompous.

One program is donkey basketball.

Clearly Ohio didn't endorse this, thankfully no one was hurt, the donkey was fired and apologies were given.  And the press and media outside of the state of Ohio feel that this is funny, not an embarrassment to Ohio.  Time should continue to add perspective to this, and I have many non-Ohio alum friends that have contacted me and think it was great, both for entertainment value and for putting tOSU fans in their place.

I am also President of the New England alumni chapter, and I have heard from several alums here, none of whom feel it is a disgrace for the University.  They actually found it pretty funny in light of the drubbing we suffered.  Clearly everyone would have a different POV if someone was hurt, but alas, thankfully no one was.

The only people I have heard from that think it is a travesty are those that are friends and are die hard tOSU fans, or dual campers, and once reminded of Woodrow's past sins, they seem to gain the perspective that they were lacking.  However, many want to state how we should give Woody a pass because his players loved him, he was an icon, (insert sentimental revisionist history here).  I even have a couple die hard tOSU fans that think it was funny and think it is crazy that this is such a big deal.  Now those are Buckeye fans that I can actually respect!

And look at tOSU: they are clearly struggling to be successful after "disgracing" themselves with a bare knuckled punch and choking applied by a bully on NATIONAL TV, IN PRIME TIME, 32 YEARS AGO.  They can hardly scrape up the $35 million dollars they need to run their football program, outspending Auburn, the second runner in the FCS arms race, by $7 MM per year, let alone the $132 million dollars they need to run their entire athletic department.  That black eye lingered FOREVER!  Just look at them, they can hardly recruit any five star recruits.

Clearly Ohio will never be able to pick itself up after this disgrace.  Jeesh,

The Few, The Proud, The Bobcats!

And for the record, I hate tOSU, and Ricordati and Torgerson are DB's.

"This isn't just another walkover from the MAC." Kirk Herbstreit, another DB, on College Football Gameday

You're missing the distinction between withholding outrage and expressing a celebratory attitude.

I'm not saying Ohio graduates should run and hide in shame. I'm saying it's shameful and sad to consider the act a positive for the University. Is Ohio University this desperate for attention?

Look, I'm in New England too. Though, here, I don't know any Ohio grads. However, years ago the guys put it together that Ohio University was closer to WV and about as close to KY as to any medium/substantial-sized metropolis. Consequently, I have smiled and nodded at the hillbilly jokes for a while now. After this incident, the comments have focused exclusively on this aspect, and the poster-child for eugenics, with his pics online, only makes it worse. It's obviously all in good fun, but I certainly don't see it as enhancing the school's public reputation.

Now, can we get Margaret Sanger and her cohorts to scour the countryside for similar yahoos?

SportsNation currently has a poll online that has Rufus as a National Hero or a Jerk.
National Hero 56%
Jerk 44%
The people have spoken!

When I first saw it happen I didn't think much of it because I assumed it was one of those staged mascot fights that is supposed to get people laughing in the stands. When I found out that this kid took the job only to beat up Brutus and we then had to apologize for it I thought it was pretty damn stupid given how we got blown out on the field as well. However, after watching coverage on the Around The Horn, ESPN.com, Sportsnation, and countless other radio and TV shows as well as online this has been a lot better publicity than I thought. Ohio isn't getting painted as a bad guy at all really. It's being painted as a funny thing that happened and everyone that hates Ohio State (which is probably just about every other school in the country save for a few) loves Ohio now. Hopefully we can capitalize on that and get someone decent to come play in Peden now.

Someone needs to pitch a Rufus commercial to ESPN while the iron is still hot. Have him beating up Kenny Mayne or something.
