In yesterday's Post was the first bad news on the upcoming budget front.  The University announced they are expecting a cut of 15 Million more from Federal sources, and the State budget numbers are still up in the air.  This cut will be substantial and will effect a lot of things on campus.

Stay tuned the fun is just beginning.

People need to pay attention and let the Administration here know how they feel.  That goes out to faculty, staff, students, alumni and the community.  Also, donations are greatly appreciated...

The U of California -Berkley just announce 5 sport teams being eliminated to save $5,000,000.  The bloodletting is getting serious.

I'm surprised about Cal, considering their revenues should go up with the new Pac-12 from a championship game and new TV deal. Among the sports cut, baseball and rugby. Cal baseball program is always solid, went to NCAA Regionals last year. Cal rugby has won the championship 25 out of the last 30 years will be given club status.

Cal, regardless of the funding from the PAC-10 is heavily supported by the State system and student fees.  This is not the last of decisions like this, defending heavy subsidized programs is going to become harder and harder.

There will be a lot of tough choices to make this winter.  As soon as the elections are over, things will start happening.

Though the State of Ohio is in bad shape, California is nearly bankrupt.   We certainly are going to have some painful belt tightening, but you aren't going to see the Buckeye state issuing IOUs instead of debt payments.

The best choice and chance for education is voting for the party currently in power although to be fair, current policies aren't necessarily the best either.

Without getting into a political debate, I would concur, I am very fearful of the importance placed on educational funding at all levels with a change in leadership.

This statement is the opinion of its author and does not necessarily reflect those of bobcatattack.com or its management.  Hey, I personally like Strickland, too.  Without him there would be no Nelsonville Bypass construction underway that's providing a lot of good, local stimulus.  However, on other races -- down the ballot -- let's go GOP all the way and shake up the establishment.  I saw a study recently on the national level, which probably translates to the state level, that times were most prosperous when we had a Congress of one party and president of another party.

That's an interesting observation OCF.  Maybe we can get Richard Vedder to do a tax payer funded research project on that.

Come on Steveland, we were doing a good job of dancing around the edges of this topic to keep the moderators from sending it to Neverland and now, you've jumped in with both feet.  Slow day at school, huh?

I will say on the present administration while they've been better about educational funding for the state of Ohio they have enforced a tuition freeze that while good for families is killing the institutions. For Ohio to stay as a top notch institution its going to have to give up The Promise and go with the money like Miami.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round
2012 45-13 victory over ULM in the Independence Bowl
2015 34-3 drubbing of Miami @ Peden front of 25,086

I get the sentiment here.  But, this just ain't the problem.

I actually hear people say you should expect more of this as it will be harder to attract the best candidates for executive positions at higher-ed institutions in a failing state.

That's a self-justification philosophy if I've ever heard one.  I would contend that we have been overpaying for talent for far too many years and that we've created way too many administrative positions.  Taking a look at my own alma mater, Muskingum, there seem to be a ton of administrative positions that have evolved in the last 10 to 15 years.

I'd bet the farm that Mike Johnson, Love, Flomo, OCF, myself and a couple of others could streamline the budget and actually have a positive effect on student learning.

Very true 69.  Ohio is struggling to attract people (good) at many levels.  Too many budget questions looming in our state, with the university and the old problems (not in a big city or near one).

Wouldn't be undertaking the incredibly stupid step of switching to semesters either.

Fact or fiction?  How can you possibly that OU is struggling to attract good people?   Again, this is a self-justification statement.  Sorry George but many on the outside looking in see loads of opportunity for running things more efficiently and effectively.

I've sat on several search committees recently.  We have had people drop off due to these reasons.  One this year had his family veto the move after seeing Athens and looking at the map.

Bingo George!  That has nothing to do with pay or job benefits.  For some the lack of decent affordable housing, golf courses, restaurants, and shopping are a big turnoff.  For others, and I hate to say this, the local schools are a problem.  That said, for others, Athens is a real paradise.  We came here 31 years ago for one year of graduate school and here we are today.  It's kind of a "to each his own" thing.

One element that is crippling State Budgets is Medicaid Spending which is normally one of the three largest state budget items.  In Virginia, it is 23% of the budget and rising.

Most States have about 13% of the Medicaid recipients accessing the system for chronic/long-term care, but they account for over 40% of the expenditures because of Medicaid planning.  When the truly poor including children receive acute care in the Medicaid system, the provider receives about 73 cents on the dollar for their actual cost since the Medicaid budget is in such bad shape.  Those losses are then transferred to private pay patients, then to the insurance company and then those costs are passed on in a variety of forms including reduce pay for employees, increased retail/wholesale prices or lower quality of goods and services.

Medicaid Planning is having a huge impact on state budgets and is hurting the funding for education.  Look no further than Speaker of the House Armond D. Budish who makes his money by helping wealthy clients artificially impoverish themselves so the tax payers can fund their care.

We have had three here at the library turn down jobs in the last two years because of money.  Afraid to make the switch with our shaky budget or the lack of $ we were offering due to our budget constraints.  Several VP jobs and assistant to vp jobs were in the same boat.  Several have pulled out in the airport interview for thses reasons, so BINGO to you Alan!
