Just pulled in the driveway and should go to bed, but I can't stop thinking about the call to go for two.  I was stunned to watch Frank pull that out of the hat.  OU had the momentum.  Our defense was getting stops late in the game and we had the clear advantage in the kicking game.  It isn't like it was catching them off-guard.  Marshall called a timeout as soon as they saw the formation.  After the timeout, the two-point conversion should be off the table.  Awful, awful, awful decision to not kick the ball.

Other random thoughts:

1.)  Pass the ball:  This is what works best for our team.  Our receivers are pretty good, especially McCrae.  I like Dunlop and Goulet, too.  Get them the ball, because our running game is not very good at all.  Boo's armstrength did not look bad tonight.  If Bates is on the field, it should be at RB, not QB.  He is not the answer under center.

2.  Bush League banning the Cheerleaders:  They had nothing to do with the Rufus fracas last week.  Kudos to the girls that made the trip out of uniform to support the team.  Bad admin decision.  They also get to stay home next week. as a result of this.  What good does a 2-week suspension serve to those that weren't involved, or to blame?

3.)  Marshall does a nice job on stadium atmosphere:    Their new scoreboards and sound system are really nice.  The concessions are plentiful and well-staffed.  I was really surprised at how well-run everything was.  Outside of the final score, I had a great time and I'm glad we went.

4.)  This is a good series for us:  I completely disagree with Love that this is an awful matchup.  There were 28,000 fans in the stadium tonight for two pretty bad teams.  This is a regional rivalry that will continue to sell tickets to both stadiums.  It is not going to be our marquee matchup every year, but I love the series for exactly what it is.  The game was close, the crowd (both teams) was really into it, and it an easy drive for a lot of our fans.  I went with a bunch of Marshall fans and they are excited about coming to Athens next year.  The purpose of the matchup is to fill the stadium without having to sell our soul to get the other team to play in Peden.  This series accomplishes that.

Off to bed.  It's 1:36 AM and I have a tee time at 8:32.

The Phil Bates Experiment should be over, for this year anyway. IMO, he was effective on one drive only, when he threw the long pass and got the Marshall D on its heels. But even though that one drive was effective, we basically threw away the entire first quarter of offense for one big play. This makes zero sense.

Boo moved the ball. He made a bad decision on the pick, but he was put into a bad position having to make a play, because Marshall figured out that Bates was unlikely to throw. Give Boo the start.

At least we are now letting our WRs make plays down the field. Too bad it took 4 games to figure out that we need to do that.

Also, did anyone else get the feeling that our D was really flat last night? It seemed like we weren't getting any pass rush, and the secondary was getting burned all night long. I know missing Keller hurts, but I just expected our D to be fired up and looking for revenge for this game.

Boo's arm is better than Bates' feet.  Play the Ghost!  Like 695 said, great atmosphere for a game that will draw every year.  Should be fun next year in Peden.

Who cares about the decision to go for 1 or two?!  That game was lost a million times before that due to our poor play:  Hey, maybe we should try and stop 'em on 3rd down for once.  Anyone know if stupd cow's qb is the Heisman candidate we made him out to be?

I especially love the play on which we take our qb out of the game right after he throws for a first down--Boo twice and Bates once.  Brilliant.  I'm sure that will start another trend in coaching--like doing an option/run offense from the pistol.

Yeah, something that a casual observer could figure out after one or two quarters probably shouldn't take the coaching staff 3+ games to figure out.

My only question is why we went with the hail mary on that 2nd last play.  Wouldn't an option run from the pistol out of a four receiver set have had a better chance?

1. I hate to quit on the run game, but we don't have one, so why bother. We might as well just spread it out and throw 80 percent of the time. Boo should be the starter at QB. I think bringing in Bates on occassion could be effective. He broke a couple of nice runs and that led to a wide open pass play for a big gain. But the best offense is to let Boo throw.

2. That is completely unfair indeed. They had nothing to do with that. It's like the university couldn't punish the real offender since he is not even an OU student, so they took it out on whoever they could.

3. I was pretty impressed. I hate to say it, but it was a better atmosphere than at Peden.

4. I agree. I think it will be great to play Marshall every year. If you don't live or know someone who lives in southeast Ohio or northwest West Virginia, then maybe you don't understand the rivalry there. My wife, who grew up in Meigs County, hates Marshall because she knows many Marshall fans. There were several split families sitting in the Ohio section and I'm sure there were others throughout the stadium. There was a huge turnout, and I think it will be true next year at Ohio. After the game, my wife asked when we'll get to play Marshall again, and I told her next year and that we'll be playing every year, and she was pretty excited about that. That is one we definitely will try not to miss. I think other than bringing in a BCS team, Marshall is the next-best thing that people will get excited about.

And in response to someone else, the defense was somewhat disapponting. I know we were missing a couple of starters, but they gave up some big plays. The defensive line has been very good all year at stoppiong the run, as it should be. We expected a lot of them. But Ohio has only four sacks, and none of them are by starting defensive linemen.

Going for two was the right call, there really shouldn't be any argument over this.

Bates doesn't even look like he has every played QB in his life.

If boo doesn't get the start next game then someone needs to be fired.

oh, and stop running the option.

Play Boo at QB and Bates can play WR or RB for all I care to get him on the field.  If Boo gets hurt in the next week or two, we can play Tyler.  If Boo gets hurt late in the season, then save the red-shirt for Tyler and put Bates in at QB.

I am a proponent of red-shirting, but we need to win some games now.

Unfortunately, OU only sold 300 tickets and 150 of them were to OU-Southern for distribution to students.  Of course some bought tickets elsewhere to get better seats, but most OU fans don't really seem to care about this series based on Saturday nite.  But then, most OU fans don't care about OU football wherever they play.  The Marshall fans came out because they "knew" they would win this game without any problem.  Read the Landon article on the home page about the game to give you some idea of what their experts think about OU.

The one thing that impressed me about the Marshall crowd was the large number of kids dressed in Marshall attire.  They grow their fans early.

All good comments guys. Their stadium was a really nice venue and the size of the Herd contingency was amazing. Markedly different from Peden but then again we have that numbers thing. The Huntington-Ashland-Ironton area is much larger than Athens-The Plains-Chauncey area. I was very pleased how their fans treated us. We chose to have tickets at the forty rather than the end zone so we sat in their midst and had no fans heckling us at all. Fat Patty's had some pretty good pub grub and we thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and evening in Huntington. It was a beautiful day and evening. They need to work on the rhythm of the "Thunderclap" a bit for it to be effective but still, they had nice fan involvement. As for the game: the offense was not as anemic as we have been seeing but we still have no running game. With our talented receivers we should throw it, and throw it and throw it. Someone finally figured out that we have an advantage with our receivers over the shorter DBs. Did I miss something about Brazil being out? What's up with that?  Defense: They picked on our LBs with ease with their faster receivers. Without our star LB in there we were really hurting on the underneath pass defense. Overall it was a good match up and I am glad to have it renewed. The decision to not have cheerleaders pretty much tells us what kind of admin we have. A non-student working under the closed eyes of the Marketing Department makes a stupid gesture and the cheerleaders pay for it? Why not suspend players, too? Better yet, suspend the Marketing Department or make them fill in for the cheerleaders. Did Dunlap just fall down or was that interference on the conversion attempt? It was open but he didn't get to the ball.

My understanding is that Marshall sent O.U. 300 tickets for the game and 50 unsold tickets were returned to Huntington on 9/17. The current deal on the series is that each school only pays the expenses for the visiting teams and there are no other revenue paid to the teams. I understand the former AD at MU negotiated the current deal and I think the contract should be revisited ASAP since MU would be leaving a lot of money on the table under the current contract.. The former AD also negotiated the current  BGSU/MU series and the new AD is dropping that series. If I am wrong about the details of the Marshall OU series details, please correct me.

Regarding tickets and attendance:

1.)  There were a lot of OU fans there.  I didn't even buy mine from OU because I wasn't sure who was going with us before the deadline to order them.  Our section had a lot folks in it and there were OU fans scattered all over the stadium.

2.)  Ou is not a big draw for them at home, but I think they like the home/home series with a team that is close. Since they moved to C-USA, their closest conference game is ECU.  Also, they have a large alumni/fan base in Parkersburg, which is 90 minutes closer to Athens than Huntington.  Marshall has traveled very well historically, especially to Athens.

For those of you at the game, here is my question.

Marshall announced the crowd at 28,000+, does this not leave the question of our attendance numbers when we announce 19,000-20,000 like we have this year?

Regarding the attendance, it seemed to me there was way more than 28,000 there.  I am not sure of their average attendance, but I was more than impressed with the atmosphere their fans brought to the game before, during and after.  They also have some of the nicer fans I have ever met, although I was sitting in the Ohio section I did encounter some marshall fans and they were a 180 when it came to sportsmanship from the previous week in columbus.

A little off topic but I was 2 rows back by the end zone where McCrae caught that bomb from bates and then that circus catch from boo, both unreal plays.  I was hoping we would get to see that kind of arm strength from p bates ( ha if only one time).  Along with that hail mary catch I think McCraes draft status may be on the move up.

The best one ever was the Pitt game.

How can we recapture that?

It's not really the population thing-it's the winning tradition thing in my opinion.  They've had some great teams over the years and they still think they can get back to that level with a new coach after 3-4 years with Snyder,  If population determined butts in the seats , what do you do with Akron or Temple?

I was wondering about the 28K number. I looked it up on the way home, and that stadium is listed as holding 38K, with a record 41k earlier in the season (WVU?). Just by looking at the press box side, there didn't seem to be much open space - there was a little in each corner.

Anyone on the field, or on the press box side see what the OU side looked like? I admit I never really looked at the section I was in.

But at least it seemed like something wasn't adding up.

That is exactly what I am saying, I think that crowd is further evidence of over reporting on our end.

14,000 to 15,000, I have stated this before and I will state this again, Peden Stadium is not as big as listed, your seats on the East and West Stands are numbered to a 1980's standard and do not have near the capacity to hold actual numbers.

All good comments guys. Their stadium was a really nice venue and the size of the Herd contingency was amazing. Markedly different from Peden but then again we have that numbers thing. The Huntington-Ashland-Ironton area is much larger than Athens-The Plains-Chauncey area. .

It's not really the population thing-it's the winning tradition thing in my opinion.  They've had some great teams over the years and they still think they can get back to that level with a new coach after 3-4 years with Snyder,  If population determined butts in the seats , what do you do with Akron or Temple?

Interestingly, I have to agree with you. Looking at the local area teams Marshall, West Virginia even Virginia Tech have a lot of bandwagon local fans. When they lose attendance goes way down. Ohio hasn't really emerged yet as a top 20 type program while VT, WVU, MU have all had top 20 runs. This area has become crazy for college football. The fact that Ohio can whip up a crowd of 23,000 to watch an FCS club before the start of school shows the potential for a lot of people to come out of the woodwork for a good team. I don't think 40,000 is outside of the realm of possiblity if the Bobcats became a BCS bowl contender. Think adding 10k students to that 23,000 for Wofford. The students are not going to support the program until its relavent on the national college football landscape.

14,000 to 15,000, I have stated this before and I will state this again, Peden Stadium is not as big as listed, your seats on the East and West Stands are numbered to a 1980's standard and do not have near the capacity to hold actual numbers.

I have actually counted the seats in the stadium. Not including Victory Hill the stadium seats 21,600. Ohio is selling tickets to sit on the Hill when there isn't enough seats. This is why I keep yammering on the need to put some more seats into the stadium. You are right that in some games actual crowds are more like 15,000 than 18,000 but the tickets have been sold or distributed.

Never said there was not that many numbered seats, simply stating that on a row of 27 13" seats you are not putting 27 people.  16 makes that row looked packed because you are sitting shoulder to shoulder.  The standard today is 23"-24", the Phillips Club has 24" seats, directly behind that those seats are 13".

I don't know. I've sat shoulder to shoulder with 27 people in those rows but I agree 16-20 in a row like that makes it look packed as far as cameras notice. Something should be done to improve the seating.
